I friend of mine told me (i know best source ever) that simple woodland is popular among Islamism groups, because is was the camouflaged the Bosnians wore during the Balkan wars. And because it was later worn by the Mujahedeen in Afghanistan.
Woodland tended to be popular in Afghanistan because of all the US supply during the 80s and 90s. Back then, wearing camouflage was a novelty, so the fad kinda continued well into the 2000s and 2010s. Similar popularity with woodland in Bosnia, although fad was shared with the Croats.
The MUJ were supplied woodland smocks by the US in the war effort against the soviets. After the war, the yugoslav wars would erupt and it would see MUJ funneling into muslim areas of the former yugoslav territory in support of muslim bosnians, the chechen wars occurred around this time aswell but im not too sure if there were any woodland smocks there. During the late 90s and early 00s, when the US was wreaking havoc across the mid east, former MUJ and bosnian fighters would make their way to places like Iraq and Syria in support of the growing islamic insurgency there, against the US and other imperial powers. That insurgency would today be called ISIS. It would all come full circle in afghanistan during operation enduring freedom, when the US would launch a full scale invasion of afghanistan, fighters from all over the mid east would flock to afghanistan to hold out against the invading US forces and it’s allies. That’s where we see the Woodland pattern over traditional afghan clothing today. The US indirectly funded and supported the insurgency we faced. Those woodland smocks represent a great case of hypocrisy and negligent decadence of the US Government. A far more powerful weapon than any rifle or IED could be.
Depending on who is fortunate to acquire them, we could see the Taliban, Islamic State - Khorasan Province, the National Resistance Front, and other factions in Afghanistan all wearing the same types of camouflage uniforms.
I doubt it. Perhaps the best they could do is give every regiment (maybe battalion) one type of uniform and gun. Like the logistics guy can immediately know "Oh these guys use woodland camo and 5.56 rifles, and these guys use ANA camo and 7.62 rifles, send them supplies."
