Project X-The Good, the Bad, the Ugly

  • Good: The idea to recreate Project X using an inaccurate but close Bel Air kit from AMT. Chrome's nice.
    Bad: A LOT of work was needed on this kit to get things to fit and even then, they didn't fit like I had hoped. The stance isn't where I wanted it, but it is what it is.
    Ugly: Molded-in color bled through three primers coats on the first job, a little bit on the second one. No positive locaters for most parts. No wonder this kit shows up at Ollie's or Walmart for a lot less than what you normally see at your LHS or Hobby Lobby. And in final assembly CA glue got onto the body (my fault). At least the windshield looks great, right? :)

      There's another YTer who did X using a different kit. I like how his turned out, really nice. I think I might have to do another one of the HK cars. Pie Wagon, maybe? Or maybe do the Cobra and set up a drag race between them and X?

    I built at least 200 plus model's when I was a lot younger that's all I did now retired and being 64 I needed something to relax me at the end of the day so figured I'd try building model's again , watching these videos and finding out the work y'all are doing and putting into them amazed me and no wonder they look so amazing , I'm not sure if I can make the one's I'm going to build be at the level you guys are but I'm going to do my best .
    This yellow 57 your building is nice as hell and I don't know if you're familiar with the show ( Street Outlaw's - on the show a Jeff Lutz had a yellow 57 called Yellow-57 ) Yours looks a lot it .
    Great job on your videos and the info & building tips are really Appreciated and helpful - Thank You myfriend , doing a amazing job 👍✌️🍺

      Thanks for the kind words, very much appreciated. And great to hear you're building models again. No matter your skill level, have fun doing it, and yep, I do remember Street Outlaws. I'd personally love to do a 70 GTO like the one in the show, or even FarmTruck. That'd be cool!

      I've used 2x like Chris @ HPI Guys and haven't had any real issues, either, just a lot of light coats does the trick.

    HEY-DAR 👊😎👍: I found that if you have a darker molded plastic body paint it a silver base first, then white, then your final color. Do your prepping between colors as usual. S#@T happens brother. Also I noticed your painting technique, when your applying paint make those first couple coats light. That way it will be less likely to separate causing bleed through's. Granted, by no means am I an expert, I can piss-can allot LOL. It looks fine for shelf filler. I'm about to tackle the paint on a 55 badman, hope my yellow pops like yours does. I saw a video over the weekend they did similar (silver base, white, then choice color. I will remember that for next time. The video didn't show all my paint booth, I usually do two lights, two medium wet and then let it sit before I clear, again, 2 light two mediums. The video likes to play tricks with how heavy it looks like it's going on, Chris at HPI Guys said similar things. But yes'm definitely go light with the coats, we're building up the paints, no runs or drips, eh? Take care!

    This 57's tooling is older than you are. It was from about 1960 and was great in it's day and still holds up well today with a little work.... Nice work, to much criticism.... A good modeler can work magic....Sorry to be critical, but I built this kit 60 years a go and is still a great kit...
    Keep work at it.. And make it better.....

    • @ceezdaday
      @ceezdaday  8 місяців тому +1

      All in all you're right, not a bad kit. And true, definitely an older tool, but there are better 57 kits out there. Just didn't have one in my stash to base for Project X. And as others correctly pointed out, the Bel Air wasn't even the right body style for X, it was a 210, but again, it's what I had on-hand.

    Not every kit is a super building experience. We have to take the good with the bad. Just use the experience to springboard to the next success. I'm trying to be positive about my experiences with poorly designed kits. Mocking up your project is the best way to limit your problems farther down the road.

    • @ceezdaday
      @ceezdaday  8 місяців тому

      You've got probably the best advice there, same thing I've said as well, not all the kits out there are good, or stood up well to multiple reissues. There were indeed positives on the build overall, and 100% agree mocking and test-fitting often should be something everyone does!

    Looks good… working on my own Project X from the movie Hollywood Knights… watched movie about 15 times to see details. I’m using the 1/24 ‘57 Chevy Hardtop from Monogram… I’ve added posts in behind the door and cleaned up the Bel-Air trim panels on the rear quarters. Wish me luck on the paint, my kit is molded in red. Keep up the videos

      @ceezdaday  8 місяців тому

      Thanks for sharing your build basics, I'd like to see how yours turns out. I remember the Monogram 57 from some time back, others have said the Revell 57 is a post 210 which is the way to go also for X. That may be my route on my next build for another X.

    Let's remember that Project X was never a Bel Air: it was a (post sedan) 210 . Different!
    It was purchased in 1965 as a project car by Popular Hot Rodding magazine . It remained so till the end of paper magazines.

      @ceezdaday  8 місяців тому

      Memphis Dan, a cool name there! And thanks for the clarification. I did mention it was an incorrect body style early on, but you're right, the 210 was definitely the base for X. Can you believe they paid what, $700 for the car before they started their builds?

    Nice, but project x, is a 57, 2 door, 210 post car, not a hard top. Revell make a 210 post kit. Kool Model though….

    • @ceezdaday
      @ceezdaday  8 місяців тому

      I'm going to have to check out that Revell kit, you're right, 210 was the base. I knew that my kit was wrong going into the build, but I just wanted to build it and see what it would look like. Next X build I want to do even better.
