So I had the opportunity to be up and close and personal with project X in 1981. That’s right after it was used for the movie Hollywood nights. I met Doug Marion who is the editor of Super Chevy/Poplar Hotroding magazine at the time and he is the person who brought project X to the movie set and drove it during the race scenes. At the time it had a 350 in.³ motor in it not a 283. And the scene on the street were you see A cloud of smoke come over the top of the car is not in fact smoke, it is antifreeze. When the crankshaft broke because the blower pulley broke off and went into the radiator.

A blown 283 with a 4 speed today is slow by comparison to modern muscle. But Man! That is the sexiest setup that car ever had. Not to mention the movie credit in that garb.

The car is cool, but it was not the only car in the movie. Hollywood Knights is a total Gearhead movie. There are quite a few magazine car stars in the movie. Also, early appearances by Robert Whul, Tony Danza, Michelle Pfeiffer (her first movie), Wolfgang Jack, Fran Drescher etc make this movie a gem. Pretty good story too, a sort of Animal House meets America Graffiti. Even the punch bag character was treated with more with respect and not with derision. The commentary on Vietnam's effect the youth of the 60's was poignant without the message being smashed over your head. If you can find this movie, it is a must watch.

I'm old enough to remember when they purchased Project X and it first appeared in the magazine. Installing the Oldsmobile rear axle, modifying the rear wheel openings and using electrical conduit to get the rounded edge on the wheel opening of the rear quarterpanels. If I remember correctly GM went through the car. Complete suspension update was one part of it. First time I ever heard of a car being digitized with a computer. I could be incorrect in the terminology.

  • @LittleEarp

Just ran across your channel. Love the video's so far. Good Job.
But, your "Fact #8" is incorrect. Tony Danza did not blow 2 engines during filming. He did damage the car though. Tony had trouble learning to shift the car. Van Nuys Blvd back in those days had drainage dips at every intersection. The scenes they shot during the "Cruising" parts were shot on VNB. Race scenes were shot on a another block a few blocks over that didn't have the dips at the intersections. During one cruise they were filming, as Tony was coming up to an intersection going through the dip, he slowed down to down shift, accidentally dropped the clutch, which popped the front end of the car up and slamming it back down on the roadway causing a pulley to the blower to shatter. It took them a week to find the right pulley for that set up to get the belt back on to get car running again. Remember, this was 1979-80, they couldn't just get on the internet and order one. 😁
What you see in the movie with the puff of smoke coming from the engine was not the engine blowing. That was not Tony Danza driving it either. It was one those Guys that built it who was doing the race scenes for the movie. All that was was the upper radiator hose blowing off and radiator fluid flying across the top of the car. Pay close attention to the scene. It's a mist coming off the top of the motor only. Blown engines usually have heavy smoke coming out from all over the front end. Top, under it, wheel wells, smoke everywhere from oil being flung all over the hot motor.
They did blow the engine on the Cobra though. That's why you rarely see the Cobra. It was blown on the second take of the race with Project X. They filmed the race with the Rail Job first to not push the car hard for the Rail Job to win. Pushed it hard to race Project X and that's when the engine blew.
There's an article written back in the 90's that covers all this. It came from the 2 Guys that built Project X originally for Peterson Publishing. They were there managing Project X during the whole filming of The Hollywood Knights. It's in an old Popular Hot Rodding issue I think. It's online here somewhere. I'll try and find it again.

Project X is likely one of the top three best-known '57s ever and not just because the movie. One of the reasons is that the car toured for Argus (long time publisher of PHR) at many of their events in the 80s and 90s which included Super Chevy Shows. While it had many transformations over the decades....the work done at the hands of Chevrolet Shop have been the most controversial and, quite frankly, hated by fans of the car. Project X was never about going around corners or testing alternative forms of propulsion. Electric....isn't in a gearhead's vocabulary except as a toy. Dave Freiburger (gearhead chieftan) actually left HotRod because the publishing company allowed the electrification of Project X. In the past 40-ish years most magazine project cars are owned by magazine staff or contributors....so they have the final say on what does and does not happen to the car. The 'Running on Empty' black '57 is also well known, but not near the notoriety of Project X.
I find it kind of odd that the '57 Chevy is such an iconic car that is still in the motoring minds yet has not enjoyed the spotlight as much as some other models.

The redo of the hood, body and interior to me was the worst changes. It looks more like a idiots idea of a show car than a hot and hairy musclecar. Engines and trannys are easy to swap back and forth but my biggest wish would be for then to swap back all the trim and chrome pieces particularly the hood and front bumper. GM engineers have bad taste when it comes to redoing this car. Put a gas V-8 preferably a Rat in it and leave it for a while. A Jerico 4 speed wouldn’t hurt.
