RIP Project X.
Can't wait to see Tony Angelo and Lucky ripping the electric motor out of this and installing a Big Block Chevy in a couple years on Hot Rod Garage.
why go backwards?
Sooner hopefully
@@hueroski because as hot roders that’s what we do.
I mean it’s cool but I would have rather seen the 632 in it
@@rumblesspeedshop-inrustwet1061 Hot rodders go forward with technology
EV or not, your thumbnail is misleading @motortrend. There was ZERO “drag strip testing” going on in this vid.
Cause it probably took everything they had just to get it mobile
You know what would make that car even better? Internal combustion
supposed to move forward not backwards.
Prolly should have picked a car that wasn't project x. You painted over Mona Lisa.
It's like an archeological dig, so lets vandalise it anyway...
The click bait thumbnail says drag strip test, but it's not in this clip.
A classic iconic car just got ruined!
Lucky and Tony ---- PLEASE make this thing right!
More battery , bigger cables, and bigger electric motors.
@@hueroski No, a better motor like a V8
There's no way I would pull that blown big-block out
I think HR Garage put a blown LS in, but I share the same sentiment.
No sane person would!
Project X is a test mule that’s had numerous engines. I really wouldn’t sweat it.
Its had every engine in it
i get how you feel bro but you dont sound sane yourself
Wow! Can you imagine the goosebumps when you pop the hood?? If EV is so desirable why does it feel like we are being force fed?
Because it's all part of an organized attack, on the things we love. The same people has infected the movie industry destroying Icons of pop culture, then comics games, now the automotive industry. it's all about taking away choices to make the majority fall in line and just accept it. Motor Trend is part of a dying mainstream media that is trying to placate to the green people and hoping others just roll over and accept it
Seriously. I don’t know anybody that wants their second most expensive lifetime investment to be more like a cell phone… well, except for the uneducated kids that everyone is raising…
Gee, I dunno. I've got a roots blower sticking out of my hood so I don't get EV at all.
@@crazylarryjr I think the plan is to eventually get us all living in cities and riding around on bicycles, devolution. Next step is back to living in caves.
@@fratzogmopars, If Greta Thunberg had her way this is exactly where we'd be. This is why we should never give 16 year old's a voice
Well, with any luck, it will catch fire...
I actually had the same thought lol
well, luckily they lowered those chances by going electric.
@@joshkiej6601 hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
@@natenasty6292 you do realize that per mile driven ICE cars catch 10x as much on fire as electric cars right? Or do you not know actual facts?
And the fire department will have to treat it as a hazmat incident.
How can people in the automotive industry be so disconnected to hotrodding and it's roots 🤦 sad world we live in
This is hotrodding just in a different generation
This is literally hotrodding as it was 70 years ago ...it's no different doing this to a car today as it was putting a sbc into a rod in the late 50s ...modern driveline set in old cars to go fast af
For one it's not fast, and for two this is some corporate money shoved down a historic hotrods throat, you're telling me that hotrodders just swapped drive lines and that's the deal? No way man hotrodders tweak every single thing they can for speed and power, what's the common man and his buddies gonna do to tweak that electric motor without burning it to the ground
@@jackass123455then use a twenty year old Honda
@@midknightx5 then use a ten year old car
You know that cool idle you get from a radical cam? EV guy just blinks. You know that awesome sound the blower makes under boost? EV guy just blinks. You know how many chicks I get with my blower car? EV guys puts his arm around his boyfriend.
LOLOLOLOL😁👍💯 %
This scenario checks out.
Lol Can you imagine the 2022 version of the movie American Graffiti?... I can and it's nothing like the original. 😔
@@xtoyota1990x Yes, lots of rainbows, bronies, and man-buns.
X is wrecked. Thanks a lot Green new deal.
@@-Barracuda-426 Yes, Brandon is doing everything in his power to tilt the playing field for EV’s.
Totally agree!!
It's sad that it's Project X that they chose to do this to! This car should have just been put in Peterson's Museum before they ruined it with an electric motor! In the end I guess it can always be converted back and I hope soon. Side note; I was at SEMA all week. There was enough electric cars that they didn't need to do Project X
Archeological dig? The car is cleaner underneath than most cars are on top. Guess this guy hasn't seen a Chevelle that sat outdoors in the Northeast for 50 years lol. Appreciate all the work that's gone into this and I "get" why they did it but sorry, it's just not my thing.
Cool, now for the ultimate insult, make it self driving. Then put everyone involved in the project in the trunk, and set it on fire.
I’m sure your small minority of EV lovers enjoyed this build. I sure didn’t.
Project gm now not our Project x anymore
Just who let these guys get their hands on X? They aren’t worthy.
More with this disgraceful usage of this iconic car? ☹️
If electric cars were so great people would be beating down the doors at the dealerships to buy them.
people kind of are, just look at how exponentionally the electric market is growing. The most sold car in europe was the model 3 a few months ago.
@@joshkiej6601 yes because they are forced to by government regulations, not because people want to.
@@fanatic26 oh no a lot of people actually want them to. No one is being forced. In pretty much all countries its the more expensive option.
@@joshkiej6601 Well maybe they are popular in Europe, but that may be because they pay $6 for a gallon of gas there.
Plenty of oil in North America, only problem is politicians with an agenda are imposing policies strangling the industry, in hopes of making electric vehicles look more appealing.
The logistics aren’t in place for electric vehicles to viable in the U.S., a country too large to try and drive across in an EV. You can pull that off in Europe where you could traverse several countries in a single day of driving.
Bottom line, government is pushing hard for EV’s with subsidies, they should keep their nose out of business.
P.S. It is a crime what they did to that 57 Chevy.
@@fratzogmopars did you really say that its impossible to drive an EV cross country? They literally did that a month ago, the rivian truck that was towing a trailer. Cross country in a tesla has been possible for nearly 10 years too. And yes, CO2 emissions in general need to drop, climate change is a proven phenomenon and its proven to be cause by humanities co2 emissions. And alternative ways of transportation is one of the ways. Where i live they're preparing steel mills etc to run on green hydrogen to reduce emissions.
Why not the 632?
You have managed to single-handly destroy a car that has been an icon for Hot Rod Magazine for over 50 years? Good job guys. I know I'm not alone in that sentiment. This is for SEMA? Then I'm sure the you're heard the consensus all week.....
Make America V8 again!! LET'S GO BRANDON!!
This was a travesty! It’s a shame what was done to such an iconic car. 😞
if electric is so economical how come its the most exspensive way to heat a house or apartment the last 40 years?
And why do all the highest level pros still race nitro RC cars?
ah yes, because heating and moving is definitely similar. An electric car has a total efficiency of over 90%, an ICE car struggles to get above 35.
@@joshkiej6601 The efficiency difference also applies to natural gas, vs. oil, vs electric, vs coal, vs. propane. Wait till 100% of vehicles are electric and the cost of electricity sky rockets. Everyones "perceived savings" is if electricity prices remain as is compared to gasoline. Supply and demand. Good luck with that.
@@BBBILLY86 supply and demand works the other way too. If oil consumption drops it'll become more expensive to produce, raising prices of gas. And smart people charge for free 😉 a one time fee and you can make your own electricity.
@@joshkiej6601 and please pray tell, what is the combustion efficiency of the coal-fired power plant that is recharging that POS-EV.
If they put the new LT6 in it, which is a quad cam, that’s going to really set the cat among the pigeons. It’s a pretty car, but if it had the quad cam, my hat would go off to them.
Ruined a classic.
This Video Was As Boring To Watch As The Car Is Now!
BLASPHEMY! Worst idea Motortrend has ever had!
Blaphemi is the better Chevrolet now
i hope you guys know that this whole project feels forced and that i at least feal that you have ruind an iconic hod rod
Wow you guys could of put a 632 in there and laid down hella drag strip passes. It would of brought the thunder but it’ll only bring the sound of my refrigerator. And much slower!
Project X has always been a test mule and has had dozens of drivetrains built by dozens of teams.
How does the rumble and shake feel in it now?! How about that nasty growl?! Oh. Never mind.
Wearing a useless muzzle, by himself, in an electric Bel Air?! Seriously? You guys are Oompatarded!
I keep THUMBS downing these videos and they keep getting force fed to me!
Interesting and well built. Though I love the craftsmanship I’m still not sold on EV. But my hats off to all that managed to get this done in a short period of time.
No Burnouts. No Timeslips. No Crowd reactions. Feels very forced, and corporate-driven.
Why does this feel like everything else that’s getting a remake these days. Great workmanship, good performance, Wrong project! Nobody asked for this. There’s nothing wrong with an electric hot rod but you don’t have to destroy a piece of history to try and prove it. Just my thoughts.
this is a car that people have always done things like this with. When fuel injection started to exist there were a shitton of people reacting exactly like you just did, and now fuel injection is the norm for racing. What they did can easily be reversed, this is a car to experiment with. I can guarantee that there will be a hydrogen swap within 10 years, as well as other ICE engines.
But doing this follows this cars history ...this car has been evolving and had so many different drivelines in it since day one ..won't be long we'll be watching another video of this coming out and the latest greatest driveline going in
Yawn... mid 13’s at best
Give it to me for a week it’ll go 9’s with a junkyard LS 5.3
I'm shure it is fast but they took the soul out of the car.
13.45 (extrapolated) ET
This isnt a hotrod anymore...just a yellow dishwasher such a same
That was a lot like rubbing the one-eyed monster without the payoff
RIP PROJECT X. 🪦
Every one involved with this Should have your hot rodder card taken away, and never be allowed to touch a classic vehicle again.makes me sick to my stomach
I've worked on that lift before. The shop is immaculate.
Yes, it's immaculate and they still managed to "F"-up Project X.
Just plane Ruined
Correctly guess how many times he blinked and you win the car.
Project X was far too iconic. I’m interested in the EV conversion and would have liked to see this build on any other vehicle.
Yeah, like a Chevy Citation.
Drag strip test ...where
That was a cool car
Ruined the Hot Rodding as its been known what a waste
Ummmm. Did I miss the "Drag strip test" part of the video?.......
Going to need to see that drag strip testing. Can't win people over by talking, it's gotta go out there and set itself some new top speeds and drag times.
if its such a great conversion, put it on the track , thats where the hot rodding term came from? lets see the time slip.
255 kW
440 Nm probably wont be very fast
I appreciate the hard work and the attention to detail, and I’m sure it performs well; but this car needs to be a V8 not an E.V. Or a least put a fake V8 soundtrack in it. It’s too weird seeing this car drive by without that rumble.
Perhaps a hybrid?
It's been a V8 many times.
Now it's the future.
Ever seen the power EVs can put down vs a V8?
Does it charge it's self as it drives?
Probably should've consulted with the hot rodding community prior to this project. A lot of upset, loyal fans here. This will probably cost you money in more ways than one.
You better get used to change because it is coming ready or not.
@@hueroski yup,I'm sure people that loved horse and buggy fought tooth and nail against ICE cars 115+years ago, time marches on,keep up or get left behind.
Clickbait like usual from MotorTrend
Every one has twin turbos, u guys have scalelectric 🤣
Project x was always about what the average guy could build and enjoy it’s ruined please save this car in the future from ev and prototype stuff
you can literally build this. People have been electric swapping cars for decades...
@@joshkiej6601 I understand but it’s not something the average hot rodder can do or afford project x used to be about the average guys build
@@christianwise4403 it honestly isn't hard to do an electric swap. If you can swap in a regular engine and wire in things you can do this too. i know several people who have electric classics. I even know a guy who dailies an electric beetle that he built himself.
@@joshkiej6601 to each there own I’m an industrial electromechanical maintenance person and I’d rather do a internal combustion engine anyday I’m not saying I can’t I just won’t. I drive my classic to shows 180 miles from home I’m not waiting to charge it to cruise the show etc I think it’s going to be bad anyway where’s the programs to recycle the batteries? Where’s your power generated if your doing ev to go zero emissions most of the control still has coal and nat gas fired generation. I live in an area we have several hydroelectric plants but those still leave environmental issues because most dams aren’t new anymore more. Even solar and wind have environmental impact so I’ll stay internal combustion your more then welcome to go ev
@@christianwise4403 pretty much every EV owner i know has solar panels so they charge for free. Range depends on what you do with the car/truck but usually the converted cars have a 100-150mile range. There are a lot of battery recycle programs already around, and theyre getting bigger on a daily basis. Electric cars cause a lot less environment issues than ICE cars. Just think of all the biggest man cause environmental disasters, they all have 1 thing in common: they're caused by oil drilling.
Link to where you can get the install kit?
I smashed the dislike, even though UA-cam hides the ratio. All the other ratio's over the electric Project X indicates people hate it.
Why didnt you use any other 57 Chev?
Someone needs to convert a Eldorado
Back for another round of punishment. The comments from the first video should have been enough but someone's ego is too big in make believe land why the public hates what they did to project x. Saw the car at SEMA and felt bad for the poor guy that got his butt chewed by the public all day. Face reality and admit you messed up an icon.
Hey Ryan, would love to hear about what was happening around this car at Sema. All the videos I saw seemed like it wasn't getting much attention.
How fast does it go and how far
Project X: Gender Re-assignment Surgery
knuckle dragger comments below. I think it is special what you did and if I still had mine I would do the same thing.
I don't care if they paid me $1,000,000, as a bodyman I would've never had anything to do with desecrating Project X. Absolutely shameful.
DRAG STRIP TEST. (I blinked )

No track time?
I wish I could see the dislike count.
Because that's where I'm at..
Project X is now project SJW.
You guys ruined it. Plz stop
A fast golfcart is still just a golfcart. EV's can be very fast. Tesla, Rimac among others have proven that. Formula E as well. Can they compete with Top Fuel types yet, no. But make no mistake, its coming. And no issue with conversions, its the owners ride, they can do with it what they will. Project X, im torn on this change. It IS in the idea of what Project X is supposed to be. Always changing. But it still makes me sad. There are other options besides EV. Renewable fuels are still being researched. It isn't just about the speed.
well like you said, its project X. in a few months there will be another engine in it, in a few years probably a hydrogen drivetrain, maybe a diesel. The more changes they do on it the better imo... Its all about new things.
bro calm down its not like its gonna be a ev forever
So sad.
Hybrid is as far as I would go with that. Small V8 so at least it makes some sweet noise.
Yeah, Sure, Somebody was willing to pay to do this, but to desecrate a magazine-car legend like this shows a complete insensitivity to decades of reader love for this car.... You couldn't have found a derelict 57 chevy in need of saving to do this to??.... Then a comparison would have been possible with side by side photo shoots...... Project X versus Project Why(?)....
No
These guys are so clueless they don't even know they ruined a once iconic hotrod, and they failed in two ways hot rod guys don't care about it anymore because of the electric motor, electric car guys don't care about it because it's a 57 Chevy and not a Tesla plaid
You ruined project x.
Hopefully someone who actually cares gets their hands in this and rips that golf cart engine out and throws it in the trash and drops in the dohc corvette c8 engine.
It needs the blown Chevy motor that it had! GM already ruined it once with an LS. Don't let them have it again!
Just because you can do it doesn’t mean you should
C M Mackichan would be horrified
Why did it have to be project x? You couldn’t of found a 57 in a barn somewhere to ruin and not an iconic tri five?
Bring it back too the Hollywood knights Chevy!
I love see all these boomers cry about upgrading a classic car. 😂😂
It’s sad to see a beautiful 57 having a garbage battery set up installed..but on the bright side when the gas engines make their triumphant return she will be ripping rubber again.
Hope you got a loud enough stereo to play the sound of the blown bbc that was in it before you "fixed it"
Not just Brandon, this is why we need to see likes/dislikes on videos. To honesty express public opinion on something.
This is not about bashing electric cars/hotrods, I would like to tinker with this technology in the future, but I would use a Gremlin or a Pacer...
@@PiDsPagePrototypes it's a perfect small car platform to work with
I agree I think a smaller car would have worked better. Ev conversion supplied by GM so a GM car might makemore sense. 80s camaro maybe?
@@PiDsPagePrototypes Oh yes, those are some good ideas. I really like the idea of the fiero, probably make it awd.

I could see a conversion to HHO but never electric...........
Why go to SEMA ? Ford & GM aren’t!
"YoU rUiNeD PrOjEcT X" people said the same thing when it first got LS swapped. its going to get a bunch more engines swapped into it just like its had a bunch of engines previously. great build IMO, cool proof of concept for retro fitting older cars to EV tech
I think you bring up a good point with the fact that it is always changing. I thought the original intention of the project was to be budget oriented? But I am not familiar with the history of the car.
You ELECTRIFIED a Chevy?
Good taste has truly departed this earth
When you call it a hot rod but it doesn’t even have a combustion engine
You can now call it Efficient Rod :D
the 632 should have went in this car not the ev bullcrap
There is nothing hot about that rod put it back to its former glory.
Destroyed an icon. Project X was always an “every mans” car, not some techno computer, electric demonstrator. It feels force fed and counter to what most car guys are into. If you want a cool electric car, buy a Model S. This I’d a bad joke and missed whatever mark ypu guys thought you were aiming at.
Project X has always been a "new technology" advertisement car. Since when has it been a "every man's" car? This car has always been a crazy budget show piece. Guess what the new technology is....ev drivetrains. This doesn't have any extra computers or technology than a modern EFI system. If anything, it has less.
