- Quest v43 is officially adding the new Meta account structure and will be phasing out the Facebook account requirement. This is a big win for VR users.. right!? Well, not exactly. In this video, I discuss why I think that it makes no sense for why some people REFUSED to pick up a Quest headset purely based on the Facebook account requirement, but are HAPPY with the new Meta account update. There are other benefits to this new account change that I do acknowledge as well. In short, this is definitely a step forward for the virtual reality community, but not for the reason I see people celebrating for.

I’m probably old-fashioned, but I hate that I have to sign up for this new account center in order to share posts between Instagram and Facebook. It’s another whole level of privacy settings to try and understand an activate in order to give them the least amount of information possible, and the whole thing is designed to make it hard to do, with constant changes, and the greatest possibility that I will miss something. I live in Europe, and I’m curious to see how this all plays out with our privacy protections here.
I don’t think that’s old fashion, I think it’s responsible!

I worry that so many younger people (people who were born after privacy was already shredded) just accept whatever terms and conditions they have to in order to have access to anything and everything new. To me, it’s like a constant battle to do everything I can to protect white little privacy (I hope) I have. Thank you for your response.
Their UI is garbage, their customer forced enrollment experience is garbage. Most of folks wouldn't have requested such a change. And finally the settings page for each service is clumsy AF proving even the business owners have no clue where it should go. (Good luck managing settings in Facebook since the first version)
Reagrding data protection, your dear commission leader is going south with USA, with Data shield V2. She steer the boat on her own. Cookies are gonna be a joke, as data would be freely collected perm.
@DaddyBmusic OMG I thought I was the only one that felt this way...these constantly updates and changes it ridiculous! I can't keep up with all of this. I had a family member send me money for Thanksgiving because I lost my job and since this meta crap started my money is pending. Under the payment sent to me say I have to verify who I am I don't know how to do this....I never had a problem with fb pay. We weren't handed ipads at 2years old...so keeping up is difficult for me.
Now my headset is completely fucked now, I tried creating a new account but now it’s stuck in the meta loading screen and IT WONT TURN OFF

As someone who never had a Facebook account and bought a Quest 2 right before August waiting for them to remove the requirement, this is my reasoning:
In terms of data, yeah I literally bought their headset and paid for games that automatically gives the company and the seller my name, my address, and credit card info.
Hell just shopping at Walmart gives that info to the company.
You can't casually live life in America and expect to be completely hidden from companies and especially the government.
IF for whatever reason poop hit the fan in the country and I had to be unseen by the government, then yeah, duh, I wouldn't be playing video games and vr, as a matter of fact I wouldn't be shopping in stores. At all. And thats stuff you adjust to when the time is right as needed, not when you're living in a civilized country still.
The reason I *didn't* want to get Facebook, is cause I don't want it, I have no need for a social media account (granted UA-cam and Discord are "technically" social media, but be real, it's not the same thing) and I especially don't want something so unrelated to be required to use *My* Vr headset that has nothing yo do with Facebook other than the branding. Two totally different things with totally different purposes. And I especially don't want my headset getting bricked *If* something did happen to the account.

This. You can't expect to buy an Apple product without an Apple account. They need your basic information to even provide the service. Same thing with Meta
@@Christian-ry3ol Exactly. Apple may have a better public reputation when it comes to data collection, but they still have a nice set of data. Especially when you take into consideration their other services like fitness apps, etc

And now it's a Meta headset, and I expect to make a meta account. Not a Facebook account.
@@PastorOogway The same way UA-cam requires a Google Acocunt, because Google owns youtube. Oculus products will require Meta account (or whatever acocunt they want you to use).
Zuck bought Oculus in 2014, pretty are you saying you bought your product before it was under facebook?
At a party or even at home I can now comfortably let anyone use my oculus quest 2 without thinking that they are reading my Facebook inbox messages or looking through my private Facebook photos and information, so that’s one great reason I’m happy, to just have a meta account instead of the fb account on it

The user experience is so bad, I've been trying to get my account working on my phone and headset, it keeps telling me my account doesn't exist
The only advantage is that if I decide I've had enough of Facebook and decide to delete that account, I don't brick my own headset since the account is now separate. While I could just quit using that account, leaving it open would require me to lock it down to prevent it from becoming an attack vector which would take more effort than just deleting it. The likeliness of my deleting my Facebook account is small, but not zero, so having the option is a positive.
The Meta account is absolutely a net positive, but for those that think it's better in terms of data collection are mistaken

The biggest difference is that I will not have to get past Facebook's fake account creation every time that my work gets me another headset. Facebook's fake account creation system is terrible to get past. Every account I have created for a new headset in the last 4 months has been instantly flagged and deleted. I currently have 16 headsets and only three are usable at a time since I do not have enough accounts. This update is going to allow educators and companies to actually use their headset in mass without breaking facebook TOS. I was hired by a college to create VR sims for classroom use like a year ago and I haven't been able to do my job because I can't even get the headsets to work.
That's really cool tho that you get to work with VR as part of your job! The new account structure will for sure fix that issue
By any chance do you know if I can revert back to my oculus acc instead of meta quest every time I try to talk to my quest friend I am pretty sure the don’t get the message and it always says there offline plz help

i think i found a way around the bricking of consoles: a good way to bypass it that i have found online (since i havent purchased mine yet) is that you could just buy your vr games on something like Steam and just play connected to the pc. If you ever get banned its just the SPECIFIC account that gets banned so you can just factory reset, use another Meta account, and keep going! (or not if you know more than me and can prove me wrong)
As far as the data collection, what is the difference between an Oculus account and a Meta account? It seems either way you have to ave an account to use your Qculus. Without either, then you can';t use your Oculus anyway. So: darned if you do, darned if you don't. Thanks for the Video!!

I cancel my FB account several years ago I just felt like too much was going on. There were too much into your business so I’m glad that you have a meta account but I see the pros and cons in that as well.😂
Ever since I set up a meta account I've lost my sharing apps list and can't add them now. My sister's and grandsons accounts are no longer there. Anyone else having this problem or better yet know how to fix this bc Meta can't figure it out for me.

like you point out, having your facebook account banned can cause problems for your Quest
Using a Meta account that is not linked to any other accounts like Instagram or Facebook will allow users without having to link their facebook which adds obvious benefits like not having to worry about your facebook being banned and it effecting your quest
I set up my Quest with a Developer Oculus Account and never linked a facebook, when given the option to upgrade to a meta account I went for it, I am not unhappy with my decision so far, I don't really see how the tracking and privacy will be any worse with using a Meta account over an Oculus account, You can still use a thing like a Pi Hole to block connections to facebook and meta after setting up the Quest

I have setup my Quest2 64 with a developer Oculus account but I've ALSO had to add a FB one too because... no choice! (which is completely fake btw)
@@realsushi_official1116 you don't have to, I didn't have to, there is a trick I used to activate and use it without Facebook. But that's all changed with meta accounts
@@FireRat I also used the Dev account bypassing FB, but I don't understand now what will happen to the old developer accounts, do they have to switch to meta too?
Out of curiosity with PI hole what did you block? because if you block everything you can't even log in anymore, and it's difficult to recognize all the directions in which the data must be diverted.
@@jackburton5085 I never actually setup Pi-Hole because I wasn't too concerned, I have kept my quest up to date so I can get the latest features such as the better recording options, Facebook is forcing everyone to upgrade their Dev accounts to Meta accounts if they want to keep using them on the Quest, I didn't see any way around this and have just switched to a Meta account but it's not linked to facebook or anything else, they will be deleting the Oculus dev accounts eventually
I cannot access my Oculus account on the Oculus app on my PC. It keeps saying that my account information is incorrect, and that I have entered a bad account or password, which is impossible, since I just had it reset.
oh no... are you able to reset your password or something? have you reached out to meta support yet? (idk how good their support experience is but it's worth a shot)

@@developRHUNT Update: I don't know how, or what happened, but I was finally able to access my old Oculus account with my old email address. My games are back. Very thankful, even though I don't understand it. 🙏🏻

It doesn’t let me create a new account with the update yet. On oculus app though it says “Create Meta Account or Create Horizon Account” someone help im so lost right now.
I have yet to actually update mine. Last time I checked I was still on v41. Might have to make a tutorial video on how to set the account up once I get the update!

Facebook was the worst thing that happened to oculus. There's no way back to quote-on-quote "privacy" now, no matter how you put it. Facebook make money from data, they simply can't *not* take your data, rebranding or not. I somehow still have an Oculus account. I think as soon as new VR companies release standalone headsets, Facebook will crumble due to their awful corporate decisions (such as Horizon). They only had the lead since they had the cheapest standalone headset. The internet is a place for freedom, and in recent years social media datamining has resulted in the loss of that - you say something on social media, it can impact your life.
Yup. Facebooks main contribution for VR may end up being creating a competitive market where others will shine. I’m personally really hyped for the PSVR2. I need to look more into the pico 4 as well
@@developRHUNT Same here, I just heard about those two and have high expectations, especially for psvr2.
They are going to “replace” Oculus account with “Meta” starting the very first day of next year. But if they’re smart (which they’re not), they could try to separate Oculus and Facebook completely and be like a “publisher” and let Oculus have free creativity as well let users have the freedom to sign in to whatever social media they want on it.

Personally I used my Facebook account and Oculus account and merge them then when I go to medicount to set up a new meta account I tried to use Oculus and then it says that this account is linked to a Facebook account use Facebook instead so then I try and use Facebook then it says this account is linked to an Oculus account please do this through Oculus and I keep going through both of these and it says that if I don't have one by January 1st I'm going to turn it into a piece of plastic so I don't know what to do does anyone know how to get around to this?
Besides attempting to contact meta support, I would try factory resetting your headset and see what happens!
There's two sides to the data privacy "problem".
The first side is the excessive amount of tracking and data hoarding that big software companies are slowly becoming infamous for. In this regard, at least the new Terms of Service sets some direct expectations of what that data will be used for. Sure, that's not perfect, but it's way better than what it used to be; just try reading the Meta ToS and the Facebook ToS and see if you can even tell me how they relate.
The second side is basically public data leakage. How much of your personal information is a system leaking without your consent. Let's just say that I've never had to worry about my information on an Xbox or Playstation account when applying for a new job or apartment. Similarly, I've never felt the need to warn somebody about theft concerns around letting friends know you're heading off on vacation on a gaming platform. The structure of a social media platform has real world consequences.
To the public, my Meta account has a cute user icon, a user name, and not much else. Meanwhile, I have access to jump into voice chats and send text messages, which are essential for playing with others in VR. This is a huge step forward, and not having this is why I put all of my VR gear up on a shelf years ago.
Mind, this change was just made. Oculus has pulled a bait-and-switch on me twice, once with closing up the SDK, and again with the Facebook shenanigans on the Quest. But they've also made VR a thing that I've been able to share with friends and family. I think the correct phrase for how I feel about this change is "cautiously optimistic".
“Cautiously optimistic” is the best positive take you can have when it comes to Meta imo. I am optimistic for the VR industry as a whole over the next 10 years, but not convinced Meta will always be on top (and kind of hope they won’t be!)

They pay very hard for leading the industry. The product is overly financed internally. Imo they lead the way only because they pay up to some 300k$ junior positions and that cross service subsidies, other than that Oculus would have closed door going this way.

I am thinking to buy Pico 4 . But first I want to make sure that is no require face book.
The whole reason I got a rift S it’s so I don’t have to sign into account that’s why I only use it for steam VR.
Same for me but I am still being forced to make a Meta account in order to play my steam games. Their support is not helpful and they just close tickets I open with them about it now.

My facebook was banned and i experienced that exact scenario and i must say it completely destroyed my vr experience. when i was banned on facebook for something that shouldnt have even been banned i then lost hundreds of dollars worth of games and data and when i reached out to try and get help i was met with consistant auto replies and customer service robots. it felt awful and by the time i reached an actual person my facebook account had been deleted and my quest was indeed bricked. it was such an awful feeling and i agree that if you spend that much money on what you expect to be a personal entertainment you shouldnt be banned if your free social media account is. it felt like the exact opposite of freedom to me
That sucks… obviously I’ve considered the possibility of this scenario, but it still sucks to hear someone actually experienced it. Based on the size of my channel/amount of comments I get, this is making me feel it’s all too much more common then anyone would expect

In all honesty even for the hardware of the quest 2 is isn’t much to worry about for now.
I however disagree with it being easier for them to track your data, as a Facebook account is capable of tracking your VR data AND Facebook data (what ads you fall for ect;) while a Meta account can only track VR data, so while they both create a digital profile of who you are, the algorithms now have to take a guess at who on Facebook owns your Meta account, even then messing up
Keep telling yourself that. Facebook makes ghost profiles already even if you don’t have an account. It’s all the same
My headset wouldn’t let me play any more games until I made my meta-account, and when I finally did, it made my games crash even worse than they did before. I couldn’t even log into any of my games let alone install any of them after I had to reset everything. The meta-update ruined my headset and made me so mad that I smashed everything! I am so angry, that I want to just destroy any headset I can get my hands on!
That's facebook for ya... their updates are definitely not clean, but I wouldn't take it out on EVERY vr headset!

Just look for ROOT device. It may not be possible yet but I guess you can stop product upgrade and use a root account to debloab the device soon. It's an android device after all, just too much traction from marketing to hack it.

Honestly I’m not too sure unfortunately 😕 maybe try uninstalling and reinstalling the games? If not maybe factory reset the headset? Or of course try reaching out to Meta’s support but idk how smooth that’ll be

Despite the quest 2 controllers looking pretty much the same. As far as i know, they are not compatible. Which means, if just 1 of my controller breaks, i need to buy a whole new headset. Why?
So me as a consumer, i am done with meta and the oculus. My next headset won't be a meta device.
Also the few games i bought on the oculus store will be lost forever when i buy a new headset. I hate meta and i am very explicit about it.

It’s up to you really how much you care about privacy, but considering you’re already using the internet in 2022, I wouldn’t worry much about it… but they will be collecting data just like they already are

I just want to have the ability to delete fb. Also, I don’t want my Quest 2 getting locked due to a post from years ago on my fb account. If it’s not connected to fb I won’t have to worry about it. I don’t use social things like VRChat. I play solo. I don’t want to play with strangers. 👍
I’m a big fan of the single player experiences myself! Which is why I’m making a single player VR game!
Honestly, I do think the “Meta” is completely stupid. I mean, both Facebook (even “Meta”) are struggling. Because Mark is a dumbass and not thinking with his head to get a good CEO or even better PR team that could make his choices not as bad that people had claimed.
If he was actually smart, he would try to get into the gaming industry instead of having it as a pet project. He could bounce back, and be fine.
The only reason a lot of people hate him, is because he is a failed gimmick.
So no wonder why Valve didn’t bother to compete.

The amount of upfront money spent to purchase your equipment should not tie you down to using social media as a requirement to continue using the device. I hope a class action law suit is activated for the consumer. I will never spend the money on future devices and I love technology, but this is over the line and I will hope consumers like me send these tech giants a message and refuse to support them in the future.

Please someone hack this crap and let us play our bought headsets and games we bought I was locked out because I bought games with a separate fb account I created before I even knew that rule only one account. So I lost money I invested in games contracted fb they opened one account but I lose my bought games I hope they sink once the competition vr headsets come out cause that's where I'll be! Hopefully every one follows and shows fb they can't do this to ppl who are buying customers of their products!
