Welcome to another Episode of Ross Reviews AU on this weeks Video we finally get to compare the FG XR6T vs FG XR8! and while we are at it see the differences between the ute and sedan... this was a massive challenge to film and edit haha so i do apologise as it's not my finest work, but i've worked the kinks out so next comparison should be epic.. let me know what you want to see!
FG XR6T Ute (up the Barra)
FG XR8 Sedan (BOSS 290)

Apparently Ford had to detune the turbo Barra so they didn't produce more power than the V8
yup they did.. thats why a stage 1 tune gives you so much with these cars
Until the blower coyote 5.0 came onto the scene.
What about the overboost power that Ford never officially spoke about until about 2016 when the SPRINT was released with something like 370KW on overboost? The standard XR6T always had the overboost available for about 12 SEC in each gear at the right temp, so was always SIGNIFICANTLY more powerful than the V8. Even the XR6 SPRINT had a higher NM rating than the XR8 SPRINT. You've gotta have the ZF Auto to get the best out of the XR6T motor. I've owned both and as much as the manual is rare in modern cars, the ZF is a far superior match to the Barra on boost.
My fg XR8 with the zf auto was always was in front when dragging the fg xr6 turbos took them awhile to catch up
@@RossReviewsau stage one tunes also do a similarly large amount for Miami engine
Bloody good comparison fella. Id take the XR8 if leaving it stock and the XR6 if chasing big power.
Xr6 turbo for power, Xr8 for character I reckon.
XR8 for sound. But that's just me.
thanks mike! i think thats the way
Well said Mike and agreed
Agreed, I have owned many XR8s and 1 x XR6 Turbo and as I keep my vehicles relatively stock bar intake and exhaust, I'd take the XR8 any day as I'm chasing a nice looking and sounding cruiser.. Sure the turbo kicks its ass but when doing the day to day drive to work etc, there is something special about the 8, it has character that the 6T is missing, to me driving the Turbo 6 feels just like I'm driving an everyday falcon until I plant my foot.. While day to day driving in my XR8s feels special everytime.. that bulge, that throaty idle and V8 growl while cruising around never ever gets old, I'm nearly 40 and have been driving Falcon V8s since the day they would insure me in one.... so about 16 years
The 5.4 is easily one of the nicest sounding v8s.
they are great :) love the boss
For some reason I’m stuck on the 8 in the ute and turbo in the sedan, just something about V8 Utes that feels so Aussie...
i like that man.. id be happy to agree :) love a V8 ute
ive got an s1 v8 au supercab (302 windsor) yes it feels more straya, no it isnt faster and yes the ute is stiffer than the wagon but probably not more than an IRS sedan
I had the same dilemma, but ultimately I wanted the noise of the v8, I’ve got a full exhaust and cai with 275rwk. Sounds fantastic, goes hard enough for street use. If I got a Barra i know I’d
Just pour money into it to make power
fair call eh.. i get that point with daily street driving vs losing your license.. i feel i need another V8 just to cruise in as im always speeding in the F6 to have anyfun
1. The XR6 Turbo and XR8 both came with 18" wheels from the factory (the honeycombs you showed and said were 17" wheels). The 19" wheels you showed for the XR8 (and said were 18" wheels) were a part of the Luxury Pack available as an option on both the XR6 Turbo and the XR8.
2. That XR8 does not have a stock exhaust.
And you even got em both in Octane Orange. 🍊😅
had to :)
Not only do I like all cars mate, but I just enjoy and can tell ur just a good bloke 🤙🏼 merry Christmas
I appreciate that! you too!
Another great video, Johnny! More comparisons would be good 👌
they are difficult haha but fun to do..
@@RossReviewsau a good old falcon vs ss one would be cool
The 5.4s are not a bad engine by any stretch, very underated considering it was basically only fords second generation of the modulars after the previous Boss 260. If I was to take any of the V8s i would take of the Miami/Coyote SC 5.0 v8s anyday. Over 300rwkw from factory with another 100rwkw from just a tune alone.
oh 100% the miami is a beast of an engine.. i dont dislike the BOSS just i think the barra is better is all.. remember i used to own a Boss 260 ute before n loved it
Ah the 260/ 290 are of no different generation of modular motors the only difference was 290 had better compression and cams for na but the modular motors had been around since 1990's with the 4.6
@@Juicyshadowz Thats tru but we never got them. We were still using the Windsor in the Au's and then eventually got the Boss 260 in the BA
It looks like the XR8 will soon be eligible to export to Canada 2-3 years later! Looking forward
yes 15 year rule in Canada
For what you'll have to pay for it just get something closer to home mate
@@ScarnonCunce Isn't there something highly desirable about having one of the only Aussie Falcons in North America? Keep in mind that although these were rust proofed fairly well for our climate they were not designed with salt exposure in mind, so keep it as a summer cruiser.
@@jellybean1976928 road salt makes me cringe
@@charsiubau1 I've just purchased a Chrysler 300 SRT CORE here in Australia and upon reading the corrosion warranty I was gobsmacked; essentially rust must be an actual hole visible from outside the vehicle, and even then only 3 years!!! The Falcon has a far superior warranty. Either way, it should cover perforation on the entire body inside and out for minimum 12 years, very disappointing and doesn't convey confidence in their product.
Was hoping for a drag race at the end tbh 😅
haha so was i when i was filming lol
I reckon a N-A V8 suits the Ute better and the turbo 6 for the sedan.
Fully laden with passengers and cargo would be the fairest test too.
thats a fair call eh mate! kinda agree.. but i love a ute with everything lol
My 08 turbs ute if launched in 2nd(zf) can get under 6 consistently. Same mods turbo side intake xforce twin pipe exhaust (still not tuned, yes the engine lights on) up the turbs! Had one of the first xr6t in qld the mighty BAmk1 had my fg since brand new too. Love the barra good videos Ross 🤙
cheers Rusty! gotta love a Barra eh so much fun.. glad you enjoyed the video
Thanks for the review/comparison! Enjoyed it.
Have a Merry Christmas ☃️🎅
Thanks, you too!
Awesome video, when I was looking for a BF FPV I drove several, both F6 and GT, ended up with a GT-P. I can’t really explain why I chose the V8, there’s just something about them
i gotta admit they look better than the F6.. best body design the BF FPV Range! the V8 is better i think for normal driving and cruising.. the FPV you have to really be sending it to have fun so its always a bit sketchy on the public roads
You made the right choice and this is coming from someone who has owned many XR8s and 1 x XR6 Turbo.. the 8 puts a smile on my face everyday no matter how I'm driving.. the 6T looks and feels too much like a standard boring xr6 until I plant my foot. And the same feeling carries across to the F6 and GT/GTP for me
Yup same here I looked at 3 fg xr6t and ended up with the fg XR8 the sound of this thing was incredible I needed so bad
I've owned a BA XR8, BF XR6 Turbo, FG XR8 and now silhouette 2008 BFII XR8 and I'd take the XR8 everytime.. Yes the XR6 turbo is faster, but the XR8 with the 6 speed ZF is fast enough and that includes the 260.. the 4 speed makes the XR8 feel sluggish though.. Love the bonnet bulge and the sound, much more fun to cruise in, in my opinion as for issues, I've had valve guide tick and knocking noises when warm in all my Boss motors to some degree and so not so sure on the reliability of them. Had to get the heads rebuilt on the BA at only 48,000KM.. Also the ZF is prone to torque converter issues and heater exchange failures requiring a full rebuild... touch wood my current one is perfect and silky smooth... with all my costly issues you'd think I'd of stopped buying them, but I just can't seem to get enough of my XR8s especially the BFII for looks and ride quality
fair call and points.. love a XR8 also.. i had the xr8 ute before.. loved it.
@@RossReviewsau what exhaust setup did you have on your XR8 ute? It sounds incredible..
good work as always //but Ill take the 290 for the sound factor ..twin 3 inch . cats cams etc
gotta love a cammed V8 fair call bro
@been there done that true the boss is very expensive to modify that was a factor to why i sold my ute for the F6 (not exactly cheap either tho lol)
I’ve had both but I can’t say no to the sound of a v8 but when the boost kicks in on the turbo it does feel insane
Tough cars with the best paint colour. Love Octane Orange.
up the octane :P
Flat changes would help the times.
The V8 has the note the 6 has the speed.
Equating a handicap as in class racing for boost the XR6T = 6.5L vs V8 5.4
if it makes it a 6.5L that's at about 8 psi worth
Well sorry I’ve got the xr8 bonnet on my fg xr6 T Ute, along with the xr8 hard lid.
I like your reviews man, just talking and the noise of the car. No music 👍
Glad you like them! n i do admit them bonnets look good just always been a trigger for me on turbos haha thats just me tho
Man I was like that before I got one. “It’s not even an 8 “
Then I got one and then was thinking, this sets it off.
I've got the V8 bonnets on both our BF & FG F6's :P
I’ll have both thanks. Best of both worlds 😊
the dream brotha
Nice vid. Sounded like you launched the xr8 so much harder
just no lag.. felt a lot more ready to go off the line the XR8.. but the once the turbo hits boost its gone!
As a Boss 260 ute owner from new, never happy, now im getting the motor re built and first gear changed i may like it again
I have a manual 2012 ve sv6 with the LFX motor, (the same motor they use in the v6 Cameros in the US)
It has a tune with bolt ons, and produces 198 killowats at the wheels, and the 0-100 time on it is 5.8 seconds, I think the slow time for these cars is because of the turbo lag of the XR6 turbo and the sluggishness of the V8 in the XR8.
I agree that the turbo is a better car purely because of tuning potential.
im interested to try a SV6 havent given them a proper go yet.. issue with these cars is also im driving and they are manual haha.. so driver error def effects the time..
@@RossReviewsau well hit me up if you want to give mine a go
I love the sound and look of the v8, I just don’t know if I’d get bored with its power. Especially after having a 300rwkw ba, that off the mark power would be cool
thats what happened with me and my old XR8 ute.. just got bored with the speed n was difficult to gain power
It’s a hard one though, I’m now bored with my 300rwkw haha I refuse to go deeper because it will break. So I’m selling it for a better family wagon 😂😂. I’ll get something better in 10-15 years when the mortgage is crushed
the Xr8’s are nice but it’s much more effort to get more power out of the xr8 in comparison to the xr6t’s and it’s cheaper mods
@@letouge I haven’t heard that before, how much would you say it would cost to get decent power out of an xr8?
@@samthestoryman3757 anywhere between 8-10k depending on tunes; parts, supplier etc
Daaaaaaamn, that’s a tough choice. One of each it is then hehe
the best way haha
I drive an FGX ute as my daily which i love, but i'd take the XR8 out of this comparison.
both amazing beasts
Great video again!
Would take the Turbo Barra ute myself, since I have had a couple of V8's and never a turbo six!
Good choice! man i would love to see ya face the first time you hit boost in one haha
@@RossReviewsau Yeah it would be like a kid on a rollercoaster for the first time!
Merry Christmas to you and the fam John!
XR6 turbo is good with power delivery.but that xr8 sound when you are at a traffic light though.
gotta agree love that V8 launch sound
Awesome video mate, thanks for posting. I'm trading a turbo six (BMW 335i) for a V8 soon, I miss that sound way too much. My beemer has way more performance potential for less money, but there's only so much horsepower you need on the road. After that it's all about style.
fair call eh.. sometimes especially on the street the slower better sounding car is more fun lol.. im a sucker for a good V8 also.. glad you enjoyed the video :)
I'll take the xr6 Turbo for tuneability and give the xr8 the sound advantage with an exhaust.
agreed
The turbo ute you can do more to a turbo engine with hp than a v8 engine.
yup its just a fact its easier to gain power
Your right about the xr6 power delivery good review
Thanks! 👍
Glad they finished the tests
I miss my octane XR6T ute. Traded for a Ranger in 2013. Practicality, the Ranger wins hands down, but man, I'm in the market for a turbo sedan in Octane now
would be worth nearly double now! i was lucky when i traded my ute i traded it for a F6.. so still had an aussie car thats been appreciating
Best review Johnny it's like heaven lol,to be honest I'd have either if given to me haha I wish, but if I had kids & was buying one I'd choose a sedan but... a turbo,ok take care you & your family have a Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year Buddy, 2021 will be your best year yet.
Right on just like me know turbo sedan :) thanks mate like wise to your family!
You can hear those 1960s bore centres in the turbine chugger from outside.
The V-Hate sounds the business with it's mean note.
They both had the same 18” snowflake wheels from factory, the 2nd wheels he showed are 19” lux pack wheels which were part of the luxury package upgrade (option)
Ok cheers for the info
I’d just get a Holden v8 or a Ford xr6t
fair call... i think you need to go to the miami v8 before you start chopping LS cars again.. boss is nice but just not crazy fast
Hay mate should do a review on my fg xr8 because its no stock see the difference there is a few good places to get them turned in perth mine has been to Monsta Torque and extreme ford turning both grate with pcmtec for xr8
whats she making?? would be really keen to review a modified XR8! love em
@@RossReviewsau 293kw at the wheels
@@justinmark4756 nice man send me a email or DM im interested
if i was to drag race or something i would take the barra but for a nice fun cruiser i would take the xr8
fair call 100%
to think i got a demo 2011 xr6t sedan with the luxury pack for 37k back in the day.....dayum...that was good value
Very nice! these cars are all on the upward trend now
60K for an XR6 SPRINT was also a ludicrous bargain for a special run of 550 unique cars in the finale. I think the SPRINT should have been 80+ new, even then it'd be a steal.
Nice video man
thank you m8
If anyone is thinking of putting one of these on an XR6 turbo .. Just don't Hahaha Great vid mate , my fav so far
🤣 glad you enjoyed it! Not a fan of XR8 bonnets on xr6 cars 🤦♂️
@@RossReviewsau So many do here in Bendigo Victoria looks wrong.
You forgot to mention the FG XR6 Turbo will over boost to 12 psi and put out up to 429hp when Atmospheric conditions are met. 270kw is only the minimum power. Read all about it on Wikipedia. Cheers.
thats the sprint
I got a BF XR6 ute, daily driver. Can't beat it.
great daily
What's the comparison in handling between the leaf-sprung solid axle and twin-blade? IFS rear?
Turbo Barra's with after market exhausts sound shit under normal driving conditions but at idle and under a heavy foot 🤤
heavy foot🔥🥵
Keep these Falcon videos coming, great stuff.
More to come! cheers
I'm a through and through Ford man and I truly wish we can get these in the usa... 😔
its so wrong they never were sold in the US
Just for the record, 0-100 times are generally done on a proper track, so they will never have traction issues, and of course in the auto, where they can build up to 2.5k rpm or whatever the factory converter is
m8 its me with a camera on youtube lol i don't got no budget for the track.. real world test here
@RossReviewsau I think he's just defending fords claims from factory 0-100, being that they usually never are correct on the public roads since they were timed on an actual track :)
The factory wheels you showed for the six are 18’s and the Xr8 is 19”
yeh i wasn't 100% sure on the factory wheel designs.. just know the sizes
@@RossReviewsau great review though man. Really enjoyed the comparison.
I like a good v8 but Im still gonna have to go with the boosted barra
up the barra!
Awesome video mate
Glad you enjoyed it :)
Fuaaa those gear changes where sweet as 🥵
😎
V8 sounds better imo. I would love to get a ute in canada new but noooo that would never happen. So I'm gonna try for a 8v manual mustang
Best option nowadays it seems
I'm a Ford guy but if you want a newer (than 2002) V8 , you should go for a SS but if I had the choice between the SS or the XR6T, I would take the Ford.
Great Video john 👍👌
I wouldnt be calling a pushrod a newer V8
@@Mftv12 I dont think there was a single engine or transmission in the entire Holden stable more advanced than Fords equivalent of the same era from the 90s omwards
LS vs Boss
@@Mftv12 Yes the Holden prime era where they never made another motor and simply imported the cheapest things from their big brother in the states
@@lukesm5747 that was still better than the boss, They are easier to get power out of and (in my opinion) sound better.
Good Review mate! keep em coming!
Much appreciated! more are on the way :)
The xr8 sounds like a boss 🤙
haha you dont say m8
3:20 the wheels on that blue falcon were 18 inch wheels
All manual xr6t manuals have a lauch assist, put it in any gear (including reverse) with the clutch in and stomp the acceleration pedal and it will sit at 3500 rpm
F#$k did i mention its only in manual
Thanks for sharing
Nice work man
cheers
should be both sedans, weights differences n handling is so much different.
not much of a weight difference actually.. and i mentioned about handling
Hey mate. Would go for the v8. Prefer the raw sound
hard to beat the noise of a V8
The XR8 sounds much better but I'd take the blown six...also tuning potential much better with the XR6
so much more potential in the Turbo 6
Yeah but wouldn’t you rather a maloo for a v8 anyway and an xr6t for big power
6 in a row is the way to go
both is best
6:34 Affordable power? Nah, not here in Australia. It's like 16k if you get a tuner shop to stick on an aftermarket turbo for a couple hundred KW of extra power. 😆
I've got fg 290 with cams, exhaust, intake and tune. It's definitely no slug
When you do that of course you’ll open them up! Sounds mint
Just rewatched this and noticed your recent G6e turbo smoked both these two 🧐 strange
ZF vs manual 😅 that’s why
i would still take the fg xr6 turbo it justs has better power than the fg xr8 falcon but both cars are still nice cars . merry christmas ross. good review
Totally agree both are amazing but the power delivery in the turbo 6 is just that much better.. merry christmas to you to Darren!
Why use a ute ? its probably like 300kg's lighter just from the tray, motor probably adds another 20+ in savings.......
because small youtuber lol so gotta get what im given
Why would you not put a XR8 bonnet on the XR6 ? I think they look awesome to me. 👌
they "can" look good but idk just feels wrong to me lol
Xr8 any day of the week for me. Just has more balls to me
fair call still gotta love a V8
I have no idea why would any one want so much power in a Ute? There is no way Ute can handle as good as sedan. I think you should have used Automatics for the test.
Is the clutch on the XR8 heavy?
no very easy
Great review, i was waiting for you to mention the difference between the IRS sedan and boat anchor solid leaf sprung ute.
Dont forget you will be spending around 10k to get 350kw out of the xr6t so its not like they have free power.
Once again great review keep it up. Im picking up a BA xr8 on the weekend:))))
glad you enjoyed it man! nice pick up still gotta love a XR8 :)
I'd chose the turbo engine and the sedan but would get the diff bushes replaced with powerflex brushes ..
if you had the ute no need for diff bushes ;)
i hope you mom can do some more reviews and travel to oz when covid is over , nothing like a lady driving a stickshift
Id take xr6 turbo over the v8 i live there v8's but the barras are sick
up the BARRA!
Xr6T all the way for power still like the rumble of a v8 though
totally agree
high maintenance cost for this car ?
if stock pretty cheap to maintain.. modified can become more expensive but still in general terms reasonably cheap.. if you compare them to new cars or euro cars..
@@RossReviewsau Also, does the falcon xr6 all have the turbo ?
@@brucezhan208 no there are Naturally aspirated ones.. you have XR6, XR6Turbo, XR8
Neither have aged well and look very dated. Especially interior. That said, The turbo is a better all round performer with much sharper acceleration, better handling and good fuel economy for a big car. 12 second car in the auto all day.
i reckon they look good haha.. each to their own tho n yeh turbo is just the better performance car
Just saw this video after watching you do 5.2secs in the Hyundai I30N. When the XR6T and XR8 were made they would have laughed at you that a bunch of years later a stock FWd Hyundai would bus gap these two icons. Strange times indeed.
its true.. even my F6 cant do 0-100 in 5.1 seconds... (yet) lol but i would take the i30N on the freeway... modern cars are insanely quick
@@RossReviewsau I think it’s also worth commenting on the tyres (brand, width and wear) on the more powerful FWD and RWD cars you review as they play such a big part in how they achieve their 0-100.
@@MrTroytroy that is a good point man..
Where are you getting these factory performance figures from?
The poor launch of the XR8 is obviously going to give worse figures.
The reality is that they are almost line ball from the factory (with the XR6T being slightly quicker).
The projected prices are a fantasy too. You won't get a decent XR8 for under $30k and it was even higher one year ago when the video came out.
should do FG X XR8 vs FG X XR6 turbo/ FG X XR6 Sprint
i think that might be happening for 2021
turbo ute, good choice!
love a good ute
I'd pick the Barra for sure. If I was getting a V8 I'd go for a LS3
Good call I reckon
Do a review on a vz r8✊🏼
iv got one lined up
Turbo sedan! I might be abit biased though 🤔
me too :p
F6 typhoon better faster than BA BF FPV GT
F6 FG better faster than BOSS 335
XR6 Turbo better faster than XR8
Sprint 6 better faster than Sprint8
HSV needs massive 6.2 SC V8 to beat the Turbo Falcons. I own an FG XR6 Turbo 2010.They are the pick of the Ford group. The smaller Garrett 3576R Turbo spools 30% faster than bigger Garrett 3582R Turbo minimising turbo lag giving it better accelaration of the mark and coming out of corners.
But the 3576 cant be pushed as hard when tuning. The 30% spool becomes irrelevant when tuning anyway because the 30% is from the turbo and the low boost pressure. You can only get up to 300rwkw on 98 whereas something like an FGX Xr8 starts at about 310rwkw and goes to 400kw with just a tune alone on pump 98 still.
@@lukesm5747
3576 will do 320 at the wheels which is 416 kw at the engine. You don't need massive power for the car to be quick.it has to put the power quickly with low psi boost at lower revs. The SC FGX needs a bigger supercharger pulley to extract big power which more revs are needed with a bigger pulley costing bigger dollars
@@zorankarabeleski392 3576 will only reach 320rwkw on e85 and at that point the turbo will be highly strung at which it wont last long. That is the same power the stock FGX Xr8s make from factory. Getting a Sc miami into the 400rwkw range is far cheaper than a barra and just as reliable.
I own two Barra’s both utes. So I’d have to say Barra Ute
up the barra!
Why the hell would you compare ute with a sedan, it' turbo vs v8,.
why not
I’ve had both & I prefer XR8 something about a V8
You might have probably heard... "Once a V8 driver, Always a V8 driver."
fair call m8.. gotta love a V8 i hope one day to have both haha
I wish barras were available in the states...
if you send me cash ill send you Barra motors.
they can be imported starting to see it happen more often
Cheers bro a sedan is pratical but dont make ya money ute can. Thanx ross
I would take the xr6 turbo Ute
100%
The turbo sounds way better but only put 2 people in ...not very useful
yup 100% the struggles of a ute
Xr6 is the go I got one
up the barra
