She wasn’t abused as a child. She was neglected to a degree by her father who was grieving and left to a succession of nannies until he married one that she didn’t get on with. The video is showing her reaction as a child and how it affected her relationship with men (she was getting divorced from Sean Penn at the time) who didn’t necessarily treat her well. But it also shows how as an adult she was able to understand and make peace with her father who she has a great relationship with now.

      Perfect
Yes, just as you have said, and it is a commentary on the Catholic Church patriarchy, who her Catholic Italian father partly represented for her (her mother was Catholic also but French Canadian)

As others have said, neglect is abuse. I remember the first time I saw Breakfast Club and Ally Sheedy - after being asked by Emilio Estavez what her parents do to her - says, "They ignore me," I had to stop the movie until I could pull myself together. I was abused. The physical abuse wasn't too bad, but the emotional abuse thoroughly messed me up for years. It wasn't until my forties that I finally was able to fully move on from the damage. The worst thing about abuse is that, as a child, you literally have nothing to depend on except your parents, the ones responsible for you, the ones who are supposed to love you and protect you. My father sexually abused my sisters and at least one of my brothers that I know of, he was physically abusive (to a much larger extent to my older siblings than to me and my younger brother), and he was emotionally abusive to a degree that took me literally decades to recover from. My mother didn't help things; she was always quick to shower us with hugs and kisses, but in the end, she enabled his abuse. She constantly made excuses for him, said he was abused as a child himself (so why the hell would he continue the cycle with his own children?).
But in the end, it all boils down to the same thing. We were children. We depended on our parents. We believed in them because we had to; there was literally no other option. So whether it was emotional abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse, or as you claim, being "neglected to a degree" because of bullshit, it all hurts, it all leaves scars, it all damages children who have no way to protect themselves when they don't feel safe or seen.

  • @Neo.Altair

Madonna''s Mother is also named Madonna - Madonna Junior was the eldest girl, and she looks just like her mother too - Her mother was a radiology nurse, and in those days (1950-60s) when they did not protect themselves from radiation, she contracted cancer. Her father an Italian Migrant who is an engineer with Chrysler, so he was kept very busy with a large Catholic family to support. Madonna Senior and her father hadn't disclosed the cancer diagnosis and one day, her mother was alive though frail and the next, she was gone. The sewing of her mother's mouth was the last image of her mother. She was terribly scared of that image as it would haunt her to this day (her most recent Madame X record cover Madonna has her mouth sewn up like the last image of her mother); she said that the adults should not have let her see her mother with her mouth sewn shut because she didn't understand why and she never spoke to anyone about it. Her father was overwhelmed with grief and a large young family that he couldn't look after for a while and separated the children, who stayed with various family members.
Madonna said that due to her name and striking resemblance to her mother, her father couldn't bare to look at her nor call her name as it always reminded him of the loss. When the family returned, her father hired a nanny and soon after he married the nanny. This was when it became even more unbearable for Madonna as her new stepmother detested her due to her name and striking resemblance to her husband's deceased wife, and she witnessed her husband who would treat Madonna like a princess and could not say no her (possibly feeling guilty for neglect) - what ended up happening is the stepmother was abusive to Madonna and drew blood on one accusation when Madonna answered back to her as she would always do, Madonna refused to call her mom and the stepmother was furious - reminding her that she's not her mother - That was the dynamics of her childhood home. She left home at 20 to further her career as a dancer in NYC, where she got a scholarship to the prestigious Alvin Alley Dance School and spent 5 years living hand to mouth in the streets of NYC and a lot of abuse. The abuse didn't stop after she became famous.
She hit the worldwide charts in late 1984 with Like a Virgin, and the following year, she married the famous yet egotistical Sean Penn in August 1985. Soon after that, he was abusing her physically and mentally (I know the fans refuse to accept the bad stuff in her life, and they still insist it's media gossip, not fact , but it's not, and there is a police report with the policeman stating how she entered his office bruised and bloodied where she accused her husband Sean - later she retracted the charges).
Here is the whole blown truth of this video single, and once I mention it, you shall see the connection. I know I'm right as I lived through it as her biggest fan since 1984 - All the men Madonna loved up to that point in her life had been abusive towards her, and here is as she had the three Father figures represented in the video.
    1. Her father wasn't physically abusive but was mentally abusive and disconnected from her; she yearned for his love, so having the stepmother between them was a mechanism for her dad to keep his feelings in check. He honestly couldn't stand looking at her because he saw his wife in her eyes (her mother, Madonna is a French Canadian, and both parents were migrants).
    2. Her husband, Sean Penn, was represented as the alcoholic who slapped her face and left bruises on her face - this was all in the police report; just before she left, Sean had tied her up on a chair and slapped her around, grabbed scissors and began cutting her hair. Madonna thankfully escaped, jumped into her car and drove to the police station, where she gave them her statement once Sean was sober, begging her to stay. Madonna had enough and told him she would withdraw the accusation to save his career, and because she was embarrassed as we, the fans saw her as a strong woman in charge of her life - you can imagine it was the height of her career.
    3. (three just like the trinity) The Hierarchy of Order that is the "Roman Catholic Church" - so the priest in the video represented the father figures in the Church as they mentally abused her just by the guilt she continuously held for sinning in everyday life but most of all she felt an extreme burden and guilty when she decided to divorce Sean in 1988 - Madonna said she felt a tremendous amount of guilt and suffering, she felt like a failure because as a Catholic you can't divorce. The MEN of the cloth force unhappy couples or women in abusive marriages to remain together no matter the situation, so they end up living miserable lives.
Like a lot of women, Madonna had a complicated life with men, especially during the 80s and 90s.
So much more I can say - I hope this gives you an understanding of why Madonna expresses herself with religious ideology and is always championing minorities and women to empower themselves.

This video is one the best music videos of all time and definitely in Madonna's top 5. When I came out in 1990 to my father, he didn’t accept it very well and we didn’t speak for a couple of years after he threw me out of the house. Fast forward 30 years and he finally told me why he reacted in such a terrible way to me, and that I’d found out he was sexually abused as a teenager. We finally made peace with one another and he told me how proud he was of my life with my husband. Then he passed away in 2020 and I played this, that’s when the final verse hit me hard, as many people don’t really mean to be cruel. Somebody hurt them too.❤

So many of Madonna's songs have double or even multiple meanings. I'm not a very religious person, but for some reason I find the undertones of her faith (Catholic ) and spirituality laced throughout so much of her music comforting. Madonna was very much affected by the death of her mother at such an early age, and with 8 children to raise after losing his wife, I'm sure it wasn't easy for any of them. 👑💙

@Our Anxious Reactions…Oh Father…evoked the male figures that one way or another she’s had a love/hate experience that shaped her life and career; from her biological father, to God/Jesus, the pries/the Pope/the Church with a male dominated hierarchy, her former husbands and past boyfriends. The premature death of her beloved mom at age 30 when Madonna was just age 5 haunted her specially her seeing her mom’s lips stitched up during her mortuary viewing was an image that indelibly imprinted in her memory. It could also symbolized her struggles with censorship throughout her career. The close-up cover photo of her 2019 Madam X album of her deathly ashen hue face and her lips sewed up with the letters MADAMEX speaks to this.
This song resonated with people who have similar traumatic experience. In 2004 she wrote a sort of sequel to this song-Mother and Father-which is as introspective. Really appreciate your insightful reaction to this song and for covering Madonna’s music and artistry.

Madonna has said later in her career that the anger she felt for her dad for many years was that after their mother died, that they rarely as a family was ever able to speak about what happened. Shortly after their mother died her father remarried and he didn't want to talk about what happened, and the kids didn't ever feel like they got to grieve. It changed Madonna, and because of that she became who she is today; because of the heartache of her mothers death.

Growing in a family of 5 or 6 siblings with only a strict father figure around can explain her rebellion spirit and her competitive sharpnesses. I’m guessing here 😎

Madonna is named after her mother (Madonna) who died when she was 5. It was the most traumstic event in her life. She visits her mother's grave site in the documentary Truth or Dare where you see the inscription "Madonna Ciccone" on the gravestone - which would eventually go on to be the most famous name in the world. Her father was a strict Italian Catholic man from a different generation who shut down emotionalally after his wife's death, and he remarried the housekeeper. That, along with the strict regime from her Catholic School Nuns gave Madonna the perseverance and discipline to forge her monumental career. No artist has been able to take their life and incorporate it so brilliantly into her art and music. So many people think Madonna is her stage name; couldn't be further from the truth. Madonna Louise Veronnica Ciccone is the woman behind tbe Pop phenomenon "Madonna" - the greatest pop artist ever.

She’s describing her relationship w her father, who wasn’t necessarily abusive, but wasn’t emotionally available or talked ab her mother’s death and how he went autopilot and married the housekeeper to keep some kind of nuclear family. I think the scene where she’s in bed and the guy wakes up and slaps her represents her and Sean Penn in a symbolic way. She’s talked ab how she thought getting married would complete her, but when she and Sean didn’t work out it was a shocking/blow to her. Tabloids said Sean hit her, but I think if that was actually true she’d straight up be talking ab it now bc of where she is in her career. The way she sings “I never felt so good about myself,” I die.

So, because her dad remarried, she felt betrayed, but she stayed focused on finish her high school and move on and persuit a dancing career, but everything ended in a successful as a singer. Madonna is the dominant "post modern" performer, and she uses concepts and ideas from the entire history of entertainment and art to highlight something she wants to address. The brilliant Bad Girl music video is one of the most interesting examples. Whereas in videos like Oh Father, she draws from classic films like Citizen Kane to enhance the imagery ad set a tone, in Bad Girl, she uses the ideas presented in the film Looking for Mr. Goodbar, (1977) which revolved around the negative side of sexual exploration and the dangers of casual sex, and adds an additional layer of a lost lover and the meaningless of a life lived with sex instead of love. Very unusual for an artist such as Madonna who is often seen by her harshest critics, as a sexual-only entertainer. In her best videos, she's is always pointing out hypocrisy and sometimes even her own. She is outstanding. Keep 'em coming.

This is not autobiographical as far as the imagery goes. Madonna's Mother died when she was 5 yrs old. And she has spoken very openly about how it has affected her life in so many ways. In fact she is such an amazing Mother other 6 children. She's very much into the arts. The 4 children she adopted from Malawi would never see 1/1000th of what she brought to her life. Her Father was not abusive at all. He's in his 90's and she's talked about the hard times growing up and what he meant to her because he ended remarrying. So I think a lot of her life experience molded her into what she became. She works her ass off. She's also a perfectionist, which people can't deal with, so she gets the raw end of the stick from her 2 brothers and the media. But there would be no Lady Gaga, Britney without the lead roll she took in showing woman can do anything. ❤

Madonna's father was a ver strict man, and he was very religious and forced his children to be religious. He was so religious that he was called "the preacher" in the neighborhood. Her mother died when Madonna was 5 and after that her relationship with her father was not the best. They would fight a lot. Madonna had a very sad childhood and she grew up blaming herself for her mother's death, she thought she died because she was an evil little girl. As she grew up Madonna became more and more rebellious against his father's religious values and against the church. In this song she takes her father and the Church and blends them into a male authority figure, the "father" or "Father". And she also mixes there a bit of her ex husband who became violent to her. So yes, the relationship with her father, with the church and with her husband are all connected as a pattern. It would be interesting that you react to her song "Papa Don't Preach" which also deals with the male authority figures in her life, her father and the church represented by the Pope, in this Pope/Papa/Father figure.
