  • The first cleaner is 41 year old Estate Agent Michelle Rafferty. Michelle’s home is all about minimalism and order.
The cupboards are meticulously organized; the walls are bare and every piece of cutlery is precisely placed in drawers.
Her children are encouraged to keep up her high standards by maintaining extremely neat bedrooms which Michelle will score out of ten.
Her three bathrooms are always impeccable and to stop them all being contaminated, Michelle will lock her “five-star bathroom” to prevent it from being used. Michelle hopes to learn not to live so minimally and clean constantly.

I was raised with a Mum who bleached everything. We were barely allowed in the house. All she did was go to work, come home, cook and clean. She was born in 1933, so her main concern was what the neighbours would think. I keep my place clean, but I use vinegar, and natural products. I could not care less what my neighbours think. I love to go for walks, read, socialise and help my friends. Life is about impressing yourself, and being a kind and compassionate person. I always felt sorry for my Mum. She saw my livingroom full of toys, books and games. When my son was little I played with him all day. I cleaned when he napped or was watching tv.She told me I was spoiling him. He is grown now and says he had a great childhood. That is something to be proud of.

This was the best episode of this show I've seen. I think watching it could really help a lot of people understand hoarding and maybe stop judging people by the state of their homes, cars, etc. It really well demonstrates both sides of the OCD coin. Honestly, I believe, whether your OCD "clean" or an extreme hoarder, something happened in your life that caused you to be that way, and you're easily triggered by certain things. The mess, dirt, and germs trigger the OCD cleaner. The sterility and unlived in look triggers the hoarder. And, that brings forth all sorts of emotions and can overwhelm the person, and that resulting stress can be downright paralyzing. Anxiety becomes panic, and panic becomes paralysis.

And although the OCD cleaners get a lot of praise they are trapped in a world of terror as well (know this from experience). This was my favorite episode so far seeing how they were able to communicate and gain some insight into what’s driving their habits.

The waste some of these people produce is staggering. Like, you dispose of the toothbrush after using it? Wtf? Just soak it in bleach! It will be good for weeks or months of use, depending how often you use it. If you trust the bleach to clean your toilet then you can trust the bleach to clean your cleaning tools, too. Horrendous wastefulness to just toss perfectly good tools like that. I use old, used toothbrushes for cleaning, I just soak them in bleach first and after I've used them for something dirty. Stop killing the planet with your waste.

What a nice group - Amar so wise yet with such a big problem of his own at home with all that cleaning and the others. Most people, as someone else says below, are in the middle between these two extremes. I do feel the messier people are a bit lazy but in terms of life description proper psychiatric OCD is actually much more crippling and depressing and a dirty house sadly so although we watch this and love to see it all cleaned up it is those with OCD who probably need most help and therapy.

There are some people defeated by life and realise how they ended up to be and there some that are just plain lazy and make jokes about it. And then there is the other side of the coin. The ones that have OCD and over clean and force their children and spouses to live like they suffer from the same thing.

Quite a sad lifestyle Suzanne was living. It appeared that she didn't want to change or more importantly didn't see the need to change. She would not part with anything. All Suzanne did was move things from one area to another. When you're having a general declutter you need to be ruthless and part with things which you never knew you had in the first place or had forgotten you had. Just hope the organised home will make things easier for Suzanne. Doubtful whether she'll maintain her home the way Michaelle left it. Amusingly Suzanne reported that she was a cleaner. Just goes to show that you can never judge a book by it cover. Tragic to hear about Suzanne's past but if she's aware of how she used to be and how she's become now - surely that's all the more reason to make a change NOW and make more of an effort?

Because they would not allow a relative to do it and would not listen to them. It would only cause unpleasantness and conflict. Like how kids often won’t take advice from or listen to their parents. It is better coming from an outsider. Close relations would get angry and not have that level of patience due to over familiarity.
