LED Grow Lights Use HOW MANY WATTS?!

  • I have gotten several comments on my previous videos describing the confusion that is LED ACTUAL POWER. How many watts do LED grow lights use? Well you would think the answer is simple but it can actually be quite complicated and MISLEADING! I have always found it weird that led grow lights display the wattage that light is supposed to replace and not the true power consumed by the light but i believe that will change one day. Instead of just looking at the wattage of your led grow light make sure that you pay close attention to the PAR value and the wavelengths of light produced as well.

    And yes I was fooled by the wattage on the label and thinking my 15 amp breaker would not hold much more than one light.

    Great vid! I think LED's are one of the best new developments in the indoor gardening space. They can be very confusing though. It's nice to see that the quality has increased exponentially and the prices continue to fall. I'm looking forward to replacing all my T5 lights with a lineup of full spectrum LED. Thanks for sharing. Have a great weekend!

    hi there , great channel! Subbed too! quick question though, I have purchased a WAKYME led grow light and found out its only actually 218 w output, do you think if I was to add another 2 of these I would get the same results as a 600w hps, or should I just go ahead and buy 1 hps light. thanks in advance !

    The wattage goes by each individual light as in if you have 60 leds at 10 watts each is definition of what is labeled on main title. as 600 watt, and so on...

    nice explanation, i like your uses of the watt meter to prove logically that the wattage labels on glow lights are completely different to wattage input to power the grow light itself. So they really dont waste to much electricity and are still more efficient then the old incandescent bulbs. But i am curious on the wattage of the grow light what that equates to interms of lumes/ luxes and best frequency need for crops/plants. Basically is there a rule of thumb of approximately how much wattage grow light supports how much cubic volume room or square area size place in a room. Because i could have a decent grow light with correct light frequencies for optimal growth but it just only supports a small little area not a large enough area i would require...???

    • @ExpeditionHomestead

      That you would have to spec out in the product information. Essentially instead of getting a big 1000w grow light you would split up into several 300w lights as long as the output was high enough for the type of plants you’re growing.

    This is why I build my own grow lights. 3W cobs driver only drive these on 2W, so for an actual 500W grow light I need 250 of these cobs. A 3W full spectrum cob cost about 2$, so 250 of them is 500$ not including the driver(s), heatsink, casing, fans, etc. This is why a reputable grow lights are expensive.

    Why are you measuring what it's drawing instead of what it's producing. If I have an LED lightbulb that replaces my 100 watt bulb in my lamp but says only uses 35 watts, then when I measure draw I WANT 35 watts but I want light to equal a 100 watt halogen

  • @ZeroMass
    @ZeroMass 3 роки тому +1

    @
    Expedition Homestead if those lights use a switching circuit based driver, this test will be highly inaccurate. The current draw of the LED's can be more than double what you're seeing on the main input end. You have to test in between the driver circuit and the LED's for actual current draw and vf... do the math and you have your consumed wattage.

    You need to test the output Lumens not how many watts it is drawing… LED lights a designed to draw far less wattage yet put out the same lumens as a higher wattage HPL for instance.
    Testing the power draw only and not explaining why it is drawing less power is misleading.

    I mean, you are looking at some of the cheapest lights on amazon. The type of leds and driver matter a lot when talking about led lights. High quality led lights with Samsung diodes can and will be able to replace an hps light. Those cheap amazon lights however, you are 100% right about. Complete garbage but by using those as your distinguishing factor you are really misleading people to tell them that led lights cannot compare to hps or mh.

    Only the cheap Chinese brand LED lights do this gimmick:. It is also NOT A REPLACEMENT.. you think those dinky led’s gonna replace a 1000w hps? Lolol I have a 1400$ chilled LED that’s literally 4x4 foot in size.. And pulls 600w out the wall 1500+PPFD at 12-18 inches and idk still a double ended gavita is so strong.. mines also covering a 5x5.. half of those cheap LED lights may pull 100-200 watts.. but actual useable light for the plant will be way lower to the point your waisting money running the light.. stay away from any of those.. a few decent on Amazon are the spider farmerish types.. if u still want somthing in that area.. buy a kit from Ali baba.. it’s good parts I did myself and it’s literally the exact same parts as my 800 dollar LED from HLG but the Ali baba kit cost 300 shipped.
