I remember back in the day when I was a wee kid watching a recording of a puff daddy performance and being so taken aback by how glamorous and grand the whole thing was. Later in my teens same thing with Bruno Mars, he just has this thing about him that separates the stars from the mere singers. He's not physically attractive but man does he have a presence about him.

Honestly I think it’s more so about the artist’s audience and what that demographic demands/expects. Which is why (even tho I see the issue she’s bringing up for the point) I don’t rlly agree with it. As the ppl she listed that have to “do it all” (including ppl like MJ, Usher, JB, Taylor, Nicki, Megan) all have predominantly women audiences, meaning women (or anyone with stereotypically adjacent interest) are setting that requirement.
VS. say guys in rap who (like she listed) don’t “have to do that”. Example: Travis Scott and Carti are considered (by guys) to be great performers. Even tho on a surface lvl they’re just jumping, screaming and occasionally climbing shit😂 couple that w a hype man and it’s a simple as-Getting the crowd hyped, especially based on the sub genre of rap.

Not only does he dance in his performances, have costume changes sometimes between his album characters, and have amazing stage presence, but just with him being a producer too, he’ll play alternative intros for some of his songs too. @24kgoldplatedvermeil Her stage production maybe, the production on her songs - Not even. She should find better producers. Take for instance Mark Ronson, he did a very good song for her - Dance the night. And yes, Future Nostalgia did sell very well.. but because the listeners had mostly never experienced 70s, 80s and 90s music. You can find many old songs with more interesting elements and 'meat' than on Future Nostalgia. IMO the album has bland or very repetitive production. And yes, even though I like the girl herself, her tone is not that special. Her being an alto is pleasant to the ears though and she has good voice control. She was better off on her first album, where there was more space for the voice to shine. Be The One is an impressive and moving song, to me. I will always enjoy it.

Kpop idols have alot of times limited chances. Alot of them have limited creative freedom from their companies especially girlgroups. It is most of time the rappers of the group that have the freedom to write and produce.
But then I have discovered AB6IX(not that popular) but their maknae(youngest) Daehwi has written and produced alot of songs. For sure there is others but Daehwi produces and writes some title tracks. That is not seen as much. Mostly it is the rappers. Their rapper Woojin does it as well but I will argue that Daehwi has done it more. The other 2 members have written some songs mostly their solos but still talented.
Being an IDOL is mainly about visuals. Not just face bit performance. Kpop was influenced by the Pop and HipHop scene from tge 20th century, especially MJ. Still being influenced by newer artists from the west but still KPOP has their own sound. Ppl recognize it sometimes by the sound not just the language. It has become more Mainstream especially with BTS, BP, NewJeans, etc..
The main difference is the idol system. Their 2 main jobs are being performers and singers(rappers).
I am someone, who mainly enjoys SM groups. Because of their songs. They have a group TVXQ which have lost 3 members but still with 2 members do well performing.

And honestly, it’s not even just with K-pop. It’s across Asia on performances and fan interactions. And especially when you get out of the K-pop side of things (so other Asian countries pop/rock/indie music and even K-rock) where live performances are the standard.
And when you’re paying for the ticket, it’s not just “I’m going to enjoy the show only.” No, there’s going to be Merch tables out where you can get merchandise and most shows have a VIP ticket option/tier system. So you are just only paying for where you are in the audience but also what you gain as a viewer. A lot of them have tiers that include things like sound check access with Q&A, exclusive song requests/performances, professional group and/or individual picture with the artist, 8-90sec chat, high-touch (high five or hug), signed posters, early access to the merch table pre-show, send off and/or arrival.
And I believe this is because in these eastern cultures where they are community based and not individual based like the west is, they understand that these are transactional and that they wouldn’t be here without fans. Not to mention how they treat fan culture is completely different, with in person interactions, regular fan meet events both paid and free with brand and sponsors, some with top spender exclusive events with all day or multi-day activities (including dinners, boat rides, picnics, amusement parks, excursions, etc), fun game shows & interviews (most a lot of sit down and talk boring interviews like in the west), different ways on how they do IG lives, fan video call raffles, etc. So why should they not want to give back to the people who helped them get to where they are. But they also want to be seen as human and not this completely unattainable/unreachable idol. That’s very much why I don’t go to any western concerts or really watch music videos for them let alone care about their personal lives (Taylor Swift is my exception but I still have limits). Because I really can’t justify a $200-$500 ticket without the perks and fun extra experience. And compared to the east, where you truly feel apart of the show/fandom, it’s just not worth it to me.

I also think Justin Timberlake is a great performer and an overall good all-rounder. He used to be the main pop boy in the 2000s and for good reason. His dancing was genuinely impressive and he put on a cohesive show with backup dancers. Though his vocals are not groundbreaking, he has a unique timbre and falsetto that distinguished him from his peers. He hardly ever lip-syncs and usually sounds stable even during dancing. He also plays piano and guitar, which he uses during his slower songs. All these different elements he incorporates into his performances make for versatile and entertaining concerts.

My husband and I shoot music videos on the west coast. When I am directing, it can be like pulling teeth can get decent performances out of artists, sometimes. Our job is to make sure that we capture their best representation and energy that they want to convey. Many artists were not trained at all, so they have no stagecraft. They don’t even know their angles, or how to make eye contact. I feel old sometimes explaining this stuff to someone who is struggling, but it is so worth it when they finally understand that PEOPLE CAN SEE YOU!
Even if you have a whole circus going off around you, people are still there to see YOU, dammit. Great topic! So true about Micheal Jackson.👍🏾

I feel like current artists arent encouraged to have great performances. There are just too many festivals, concerts, tours and appearances. All of the best performers of this generation are by artist that are scarcely performing (except for Frank Ocean but I heard thats because he was still dealing with the death of a family member around his Coachella performance). And rappers have never really been into the theatrical performance elements. They just grab the mic but because rap is so oversaturated... they dont really hit like rapper in the past. Back in the day, rappers used to freestyle, improvise on the spot, add different elemnts to their musical performance. Rappers used to change up the instrumental, incorporate live bands, have dancers, bring out rnb artist. So many things have changed in music and entertainment as a whole. its like black movies from the 90's. They would have everybody and anybody making cameos in random movies but now they dotn collaborate as much. We need more collaboration.

For YEARS I've been wondering why some of these men have terrible stage presence and are playing arenas, large venues. AND some of these artists get millions of streams on songs that offer little musicality, poor vocals, and BAD lyrics. I just don't understand. I can think of dozens of underappreciated artists with MULTIPLE SKILLS/TALENTS in each genre that I'd rather see live. I'm glad you made this video on performance because hopefully, it will make a few people rethink the artists they support and why.

I started becoming a fan of MJ when I started middle school 2016-2017.
Might I say that, especially during that era of music, no artists (aside from Beyoncé, of course) did not impress even one bit so I literally didn’t understand the hype around the mainstream music that was going viral because most of them didn’t care about performance. I genuinely thought that I lived in an era were performances were going to die out.
Then I discovered BTS (always in 2017), watched their music videos, their dance practice videos and then their performances and I started becoming hopeful again; but then I look deeper into the Kpop industry and saw that what BTS did was simply a norm and an expectation, for both girl groups and boy groups.
If you ever want to see a random artist you don’t know, I assure you that 90% of the times the safest option is to pick a Kpop group ‘cause they know how to put up a show.

Madonna and her blonde ambition tour truly revolutionizes how a pop concert could be done. And the impact goes on even at today's level, in seemingly every single female artist. The problem with male artists though, I think, is heavily due to the decline of male musicians doing pop music.
There are equivalent blueprints laying there for male pop stars, MJ/Prince/Freddie, just to name a few. And back when men felt that it was OK to do boppy/vibrant pop music, the influence was still clear to be seen. There were Usher, Bruno Mars, Chris Brown, Jason Derulo, Justin Timberlake/Bieber(the latter three are, imo, mediocre but at least they put in some efforts performing).
But nowadays, the male musicians seem to distant themselves even further from the pop girlies, as if doing the traditional pop music is embarrassing and too feminine. They either go with a completely acoustic sad boy guitar-playing style, or the walking around rapping with loud background tracks mode. I don't know if the big labels behind are responsible, maybe it's less costly to produce male artists in this way so they can earn more quick money.
My parents bought me DVD of Janet's Velvet Rope Tour when I was a kid, and I watched that concert for like 100 times. There was no high tech LED screen, no super expensive props, no insane design of stage. But even today I found that concert much more amusing than a lot of concerts by some big name artists now.
However, I am very happy to see a many less mega-mainstream artists putting in efforts like their life depends on it. Just to name a few, Rina Sawayama, Charli XCX, Kim Petras, Chappell Roan. They don't have the arena-tour budget but their shows are vibrant, entertaining, energetic, and creative. I highly recommend you check out their tour sometimes.

She's not a showgirl performer in the sense of flips and tricks and dancemoves galore, but vocally she excells, and her chatting away in between (I assume) is different per show, depending on what she's seen or done in the day.

Glad I found your channel. I have been saying this to my nieces and nephew for a few years. Performs today are trash. Yes the females work harder than the males, but they aren’t putting in the work that they did 20 years ago either. For example, Janet Jackson’s work ethic, Madonnas work ethic, Beyoncé, Britney, Jennifer Lopez. No current or new female is putting in the work they did. So they don’t even deserve superstar status. They may make a good song here and there but they aren’t creating eras, they aren’t changing culture with fashion like Janet did with her 1814 earrings, or madonnas bracelets, Britney’s low rise jeans and belly button ring, Jennifer Lopez’s green dress. If anything they steal from the women of the past, and don’t create anything new. Hell even Bjork had memorable looks. Dolly Parton is currently making headlines for her looks, why aren’t the new crop doing anything? Basic. Lazy. Boring.

@@CamrynSuzanne Yes and I hate every bit of it. I had high hopes for Dua Lipa but I think she has made some bad missteps recently. Mainly she became too oversaturated on social media. A superstar needs mystery, they need to be everywhere but not really accessible. A superstar is Gucci, not George from Walmart. You should be able to look, but never be able to feel that you can actually gain access to it. Superstardom is aspirational and there aren't that many people out there doing aspirational things right now because they don't have the work ethic like they used to. Was it unfortunate that Joe Jackson beat that work ethic into the Jackson children, sure. Did it create greatness? Also, yes. Did the death of Madonna's mother fuel her search for love and world domination? Yes. Did Dolly Parton's dirt poor upbringing make her hungry for success? Yep. Beyonce's father would also be considered abusive today making a group of young girls dance in high heels on a stage he built in his backyard while singing. But where would those girls be now? Beyonce's work ethic is insane because of him. Don't even get me started on Jennifer Lopez. That woman is a friggin' machine. She should be an inspiration to all women, men, and children for the amount of things she can do. 54 years old and still dances amazingly, still has drive to be not just ok or good, but GREAT. She may not be the best at everything, but it's the drive and the effort that is just so damn inspiring.

I think it’s worth noting that we’re entering an era where the roles are becoming reversed where women are dominating and men aren’t really seen as valuable or favorable as far as music goes, especially among the black community. Not to say the misogyny and sexism towards women is gone but it’s slowly shifting.
So because of that, nobody is typically checking for male artists and performers anymore which is sad because we’re going through a small renaissance where the great male performers are showing up again. Of course, our legends like Usher, Miguel, Justin Timberlake, The Weeknd and Chris Brown are having a resurgence and Justin Bieber is expected to come back soon but there are new male artists too like Jungkook, Tone Stith, No Lonely Hearts & No Guidnce bringing back boybands and then you have Josh Levi who’s now being seen as the defacto new black pop IT boy, he’s basically the male Normani which is ironic given the two are childhood best friends. At the very least, he is slowly blowing up with Birthday Dance being a viral hit and the music video being praised for bringing back dancing among men again. But still, no one is really checking for the guys no more.

You're right, I've been to all types of different genres of shows/festivals and when I compare and contrast the women I've seen versus the men I've seen, men really can get away with the bare minimum stage performances. I've seen some cool stuff from men at shows but when I think about stage production, costumes, dancers, choreography, etc. the women DELIVER.
Jhené Aiko didn't do a lot on stage when I saw her in 2018 but she brought presence, her talent and looked amazing! (I think she was pregnant though so probably why she wasn't moving too much??) It was a great time. The crowd was standing the whole time and engaged.
Melanie Martinez did the MOST at her show last summer, I loved it so much. I feel like it if she didn't do all that her fans might have given her backlash/disappointment because SO MANY people were dressed up and in cosplays, but I never really thought about that possibility until this video because I expected the extra from her. Great video! I agree so much with your perspective. I just want to add that a live band is also a great element to give your audience a captivating show if you're not the best dancer/entertainer. A band breathes new life into a song but most rappers just stick with the same tired track. No added sound effects or anything!

The problem is not "men"; its contemporary rappers.
Prince and MJ out performed EVERYBODY, men women, pets, etc. The music business has changed a lot.
You really can't compare pop artists with rappers. Rappers portray stage machismo in which singing = feminine unless its 50 Cent-style singing where you really aren't singing. Your generation may lack performers but its because your generation's music is mostly female pop singers and rappers. If you go back to an era where black people were in BANDS, everybody was about performing, musicianship and quality. Go back and look at live performances by Zapp, Lakeside, Cameo, Earth Wind and Fire, and so many others and you will see fire performances. Even the 90s boy bands had to step and sing Temptations style in order to be successful. It is not a feminist issue as it seems the tone of this commentary is leaning, but rather a marketing issue.
I can give you a simple answer to "why" and its MONEY. The accountants, data analysts and lawyers are deep in the music industry. They have determined by algorithm what sells and what doesn't and that is what gets the most money thrown at it. For women, its pretty pop singers. Aside from Lizzo, its almost a must that a woman be attractive to be successful in the music biz this did not used to be the case at all but the algorithm has spoken because people have spoken. For every Bryson Tiller, Miguel, John Legend, Anderson Paak,Chris Brown, etc., there are 50 rappers that all just walk across the stage because they think performing is feminine and to keep it real, they probably CAN'T do anything else, but your generation supports them.
My gen had plenty of performers and most of the time, the men were better performers. The 80s brought the dance funk, the 90s had new jack swing and if you couldn't dance and sing fast songs at the same time, you were a joke. R&B didn't used to be synonymous with slow songs. The industry stood on rap and shook R&B out of the tree. With it went musicality and performance. Even the rappers back in the day had to perform. (Big Daddy Kane, LL Cool J, Kool Moe Dee, Public Enemy, Heavy D, etc.) Now? Not so much. You want better artists? Demand better artists. Support performers and you'll get performers; otherwise, its gonna be the same old same old.

Gurl it’s always those underappreciated artists who always give amazing Performance. Not Bare minimum but really perform. I discovered Noah Kahan years ago. He wasn’t as big popular in the mainstream media as other artists. And even now that he’s getting the recognition he deserved, he never slack one bit.

While I get that a lot of expectations are placed on female performers, I think it's primarily from their fans.
For example, not much was even mention about the good male performers such as The Weeknd, Harry Styles, Eminem, Busta Rhymes, Kendrick, Travis Scott's visual theme concerts, Playboi Carti etc.
Also I think artists are expected to be a representation of themselves when performing, so female rappers have to maintain the music video choreography and visuals. Because male rappers present as nonchalant, it allows them to get away with not doing all that because their fanbase doesn't expect it. But that doesn't excuse lackluster performance filled with low energy, lip-syncing and disconnection from the audience. And rappers have been getting called out for it now
I also think realistically, people like Post Malone and J Cole always look modest, so that's their image as an artist and it's expected to perform as that. It'd be weird to expect J Cole to now have choreography when all he does in his music videos is rap

People can hate on kpop as much as they want but there is absolutely no denying groups like Ateez bring a whole production to their concerts and it’s so good to see!! While not every artist NEEDS to bring singing AND dancing to the table, it definitely is something different. I would also love to see ones like Bruno Mars, Sabrina Carpenter, Lana Del Rey, Flo, Ciara, etc live. I bet they can put on an amazing show.

I think you missed a very glaring example…Lil Nas X! He’s leading the way in terms of putting on a show and being a true performer, especially as not only a rapper but a performer who kind of transcends genre! On top of that, he’s a gay man, which connects to your point about the girls and gays being more tuned in to this kind of thing! Not only do I think LNX is breaking gender rules and stereotypes as a man in his aesthetic but he’s breaking down barriers for other male rappers to not shy away from dipping their toes into elevating their performance game. Though offset did it before, it wasn’t too long after at all that LNX came through SWINGING!

I like the points made but felt like the topic should’ve been more narrowed to the genres being criticised. If we’re criticising male performers, the percentage actually decreases because a number of male artists in indie, rock music, R&B, afrobeats, and amapiano bring their stage presence and invest in their craft on stage. There are pop stars like Taylor Swift & Dua Lipa, who had to improve stage presence to make her pop out as an artist whose vocals aren’t (respectfully) the star of the show. It’s also why a lot of bands will be familiar with fans because of a frontman or member’s stage performance. On a bigger level, it comes down to the intentions and the team of the performer.

Dua Lipa, so far, has been the best advocate for doing your best and upgrading yourself for people that love you, A.K.A. fans. The fact that she went from being our typical pencil sharpener icon to evolving into arguably one of the greatest female performers of our generation shows the hard work and dedication she had put in for her fans. So as Miley Cyrus, all though I am not a huge fan of her, I know that she has become a better performer throughout time, and for those reasons, I respect her and give her flowers (pun intended). The thing about performing is that people know that they can still get paid equally as someone who does perform and uses hard work, with less effort. People do not care about what their fans think anymore because they know that their fans will pay them for a crap job and say nothing about it, so they do not improve.

I went to see Ed Sheeran live in 2022 and he was awesome. He didn't have backup dancers or backup singers, and the background instrumentals were all done with a live band and himself.
Towards the later part of his performance he started using this machine, can't remember the name rn, but he was basically beatboxing (I didn't even know he could do that), creating the instrumentals on his music pad, then compiled the whole thing with this machine he had, WITH HIS FOOT, WHILE PLAYING THE GUITAR... WTF???
He did all of this live, while singing and running around on his rotating stage after having performed for no less than an hour.
No backup dancers, no backup singers, just him in his t-shirt and jeans, singing, running around ✨artistically✨. Pure musical genius in it's rawest form. The man is unbelievable.
He's a different kind of performer that I don't think gets the attention his peers do for his live performances. Maybe it's because he's been around for such a long time.

this is part of the reason why i’m a k-pop stan. most if not all of the groups are great performers because it’s literally their job to perform. when i spend money on a concert ticket, i know that i’m getting the most out of it. i also love western artists like dua lipa who have absolutely amazing stage presence. i don’t think people realize how much of an impact stage presence has, it can make or break an entire performance.
