It is crazy how Ambiant Light is enough to make the game look more appealing.
I'm sure there is more to do, but this is a big step! :D
Good lighting can do absolute wonders, check out the original Fear or Stalker if you need examples!
This is such a cool concept for a game and it is an accurate representation of what 4D would look like. Ive developed games for about a year and you were (and are) a huge inspiration
this is inspired by marc's work i believe
I agree with this comment, except that this game is an accurate 4D representation. We can't know for sure how slices work nor can we move in 4 dimensions simultaneously, but I think the most accurate we can get to it is imagining that a 3D world is a book and the 4D world is a library. Switching the book you read is equivalent to going through the 4th dimension and switching the worls you're in without any interpolation. Life seems impossible in a world like this because you can switch to a world where your 3D position is equivalent to something that will kill you.
@@tomsterbg8130 this is exactly what is going on but we are reading parts of the books in the wrong order, and switching to a place which will kill you is the same as walking into lava in 3d
@tomaterBG wtf are you talking about. This game is absolutely an accurate representation of 3d slices of a 4d world so you’re wrong and wtf was that dumb library rant you were on about? There are way better ways to visualize 4d than a fucking library 🤦♂️

Suggestion: add a sun and make it travel in the sky along the 4th axis. That way it will cast shadows in our slice of the world, and the later in the day, the longer the shadow, so the farther we'll be able to "see" into the 4th dimension.
Good idea
the current sun actually does go into the 4th dimension for a bit near 'noon' and so does the moon at 'midnight'
just that casting shadows wont probably be a setting till another few engine re-writes and an ocean load of optimazations later as the game still crashes when traveling along the w axis and you reach a chunk border.
add the fact that proper shadow casting would somehow have to be given to the gpu as a volume intead of the normal 2d projections every other game uses or just a hacky way in general.
I think a nice feature would be to add stars in the night
Could you imagine all the different possibile constilations in 4D!
personally for 4D miner creative mode would be nice
@@everythingisscience658 it would be amazing
Though maybe not. The night sky would become a light show when moving the 4D slice and hurt the eyes. 4D stars would be pretty cool in of itself though.
@@omnisel I mean he could just make a skybox
Would love to see some more complex 4d beings inhabiting the world than spiders. They are cool due to the scary concept that they are larger than they seem and have 32 legs, most of which are hidden. But i feel that by sticking to the conventions of Minecraft and it's mob style, the potential of the game becomes limited. I would like to see intimidating completely original entities such as the one that picked up the person in the introduction video, or enormous creatures with unconventional layouts that move in bizarre ways and utilize 4 dimensional space to seemingly teleport around.
we now have butterflies when ever that update vid comes out and it stops being a snapshot Cx
I noticed a small bug while playing: hyperspiders usually dont use their 4th dimension to get to you so they will easily get stuck outside of a 3d house
Am a hypersupporter and already dmed him directly about that exact thing, it’s not exactly a bug, it’s just a very simple pathing algorithm, move horizontally towards you and jump if there is a block in the way, simple as that, he’s working on making a more short range, more advanced pathing system that takes advantage of all 4 spatial dimensions.
@@ladyalicent705 Thank you
@@ladyalicent705 thanks for helping Monsters kill us more efficently♡
Jk lol thanks for reaching to him
Sometimes they get stuck but later get to me so I think they're just not able to go around obstacles in their way and continue hugging the block they ran into.
yeah its because the path finding atm is just a straight line to the player
3d path finding is already hard so i wouldn't expect 'smart' path finding for a while
Man, its crazy how big this game is, i keep unable to visualize how big the world of the game is, like how big the chunks are
8x8x8x256
x z w y
big Cx
though after about 10000000 blocks you cant move due to floating point errors
This thing about casting shadows from objects outside of your slice is actually great improvement. Now there's constant feeling that world is a lot bigger than you see.
this new update may not be much but its the first step to making a masterpiece
4D ambient occlusion shadows are AMAZING.
Would you consider adding tiny shadows for items dropped, so that their presence is inferrable without the hyperglasses?
That would be cool.
I wonder if it would be really expensive while items were moving, though. I assume he's probably cacheing some of the calculations, and an object falling or sliding or floating in (hypothetical) flowing fluids might require updating lighting information every frame. But maybe that's not an issue.
@@delphicdescant fluids will be amazing
he should just add a red circle under items less taxing and fits
Interesting bug I ran into that is probably worth investigating as it gave me a headache for a solid half of an hour:
When using scroll wheel on my mouse to shift through the 4th dimension, I thought it would be cool to unlock the scroll wheel (I have a g502 so it’s on a bearing) and see what would happen if I spinner it quickly. The game visually acted exactly how I expected, but audibly, it was awful. When I did this it produced and extremely loud, high pitched noise that could be heard even on low volumes . I think this probably has something to do with the computer not calculating fast enough and generating some noise from floating point errors, but it’s an annoying bug none the less. Sorry if this sounds poorly written.
TL;DR: when shifting in 4th dimension it makes a really loud noise because computer decided to yell in my ear
considering how the game stutters when scrolling normally on a middling pc, yeah it might have been screaming in pain.
@@donovanmahan2901 your computer just screaming in pain as you travel quickly through the 4d world while it tries processing all of it
Is it audible if you disable audio completely? If not then it's indeed a bug in the game. If yes then it's a hardware thing. Audio system in the computer relies on ground/mass having 0 current (or something like that), but rapid changes of current drawn by eg. the CPU when performing calculations affect it - thus the audio system produces noises. Although you said that it's extremely loud whereas what I'm thinking about is very quiet, so it's probably not that
Possibly coil whine from your GPU. Coil whine would be audible without any speakers or headphones, though, because it's actually the hardware making noise, and not something in the audio system at all.
Maybe noise generates when you scroll? Yknow. 4d sound might not exist in game and the game just be playing 3d sound each time you scroll.... hence playing several slices per second when you scroll fast
I've never thought about light and shadow impacting the gameplay so interestingly, it's normally seen as a just a graphic, visual, appealing thing. Being able to get hints about what lies outside your current slice is amazing and adds excellent curiosity to explore the 4D world and the scrolling feature.
well that what happens when instead of 2d squares of AO you deal with 3d cubes of AO
same whenever we get proper shadows and other lighting effects
normal maps will be very interesting especially when it comes to reflections
How would a 4D mirror look to a 3D person? Could you use such a mirror to view the hyperdimensional horrors that lie beyond the veil? I was just thinking that if a shadow (and thus light) can pass through from hyperdimensional space, that a mirror should allow one to see the watchers.
This one is based on how 3d mirror look to 2d person
Much like everything else in the world of 4D Miner, as a 3d being you can only see part of the mirror at once, so no.
@@ladyalicent705 I'm talking about a mirror rotated 45 degrees into the fourth dimension in real life. I realise you'd only see an infantesimally small line of mirror in a 3D viewport, but what if the mirror itself was a 3D or 4D shape, instead of a rectangle? Or, what if you had a series of already infantesimally thin mirrors, each rotated 45 degrees into the fourth dimension, to produce a series of infantesimally small lines that together create a single 2D projection of the fourth dimension? Would you be able to see the forms of the watchers?
The points and angles that represent the geometry of the infantesimally thin mirrors could be interpolated to produce a 3D mirror that would have the same effect.
Awesome
My brain cannot Really grasp the 4d geometry of that spoken mirror, or the Image it would represent.
Really would like to see an animation of that.
I had thought that AO would cast shadows from non-visible blocks, that's pretty cool.
And yeah, I figured it would be quite a resource hog for this game.
Funny credits bug... Maybe at some point, when you fix it, you could create an "extras" page with some funy stuff like the broken credit textures.
I love the fact the sun and moon were replaced with text, dunno what it was though.
Was one of them "Mashpoe"?
This game has some actual blowing potential. Cant wait to see it explode.
It's a shame the kickstarter didn't get the backing it deserves. This has so much potential! And I love the demo already.
I think it needs some big youtubers to bring attention to it for this to blow up
Matt Parker needs to know about this game, he loves 4D stuff and this looks like a very cool representation/visualization of 4D
Yea! I’m not a patreon yet, but I’ll be here through the whole development getting inspired by this amazing concept. I hope the best for this project!!
Same! I really hope this goes really far!
With the glitch involving the credits fix it (obviously) but maybe have an easter egg whereby pressing a combination of different buttons while in the credits it causes the world to turn into the different patrons' names. Easter eggs in games are always a good thing to add and it would give people more reasons to subscribe to your patron.
It's amazing how much the lighting changes improve the look of the game, looks way more professional now :D
U going to be printed in history for being one of the first ones to make a 4D concept game like this.
crazy to think about how fast we humans are evolving...
I feel like because this game is so surreal it'd be cool to maybe have a biome inspired by the credit glitch at some point in the future! Of course reworked to be actually playable lol
Loving everything about this project! With full polish, unique features, and detail, I could easily see this actually becoming something more than a minecraft-like novelty game, with genuine challenge and fun puzzles, bosses, and the like.
Also, huge respect to you for including bugs and how to avoid them in this, it's normally something most gamedevs shove off to the side to make their games look more pristine, but it means players have to go searching for fixes. Can't wait to see more!
I'm trying to understand this 4D game, in our 3D world, through this 2D screen, with my 1D brain
The 1D brain got me, because i can relate
overused joke
In 0D singularity too XD
overused joke, not funny anymore,
Really love the font typing effect! Also love that you have a black windows theme. You know someone is a dedicated programmer when they have a black theme.
Wow, serious props for implementing proper 4d lighting. Really adds a lot having shadows coming from outside the visible 3d slice
I'm reeeeeally curious to know how multiplayer will work in the future!
well first things first you have to texture the entire model including inside as you will be able to see inside other when rotated differently from them
I was expecting the shadows to be in 3D, since the shadows of our world is in 2D.
they are, we just end up seeing 2d slices of shadows.
@@donovanmahan2901 oh, you're right. Didn't think about it in that way...
I wonder if 4DMiner will have some sort of story/lore
There is a story
Awesome progress
still super fascinating and i still cant wrap my head around the 4th dimension... really interesting and fun
Can't wait to see this game being completed!
wow the game looks so much better with the improved lighting!
You are a legend dude! I wish I could support you but I don't have money to donate. Sorry! 😔
It’s ok… I don’t either!
@@Itskaidaorangeguy2017 😢 we are same bro
We are in this together :(
Same dude 🥺. Btw R.I.P Techno, he will be forever in my heart.
The best features are ones a player doesn't even notice, I know how hard implementing that light was, and I appreciate it, I can't wait to see how redstone will work across multiple dimensions :D
like with rails youd have a 6way intersection at 1 block Cx
honestly, I really like the credits bug. Seems more like a fun easter egg! also looks cool and would be a nice challenge. anyways, have a good one
I love the game already, and I love that you're making a dev log for it.
I can't get over how cool this is. I will be downloading this weekend
Nice work on the lighting! Looking forward to future progress!
Love this concept
I can't wait for the game to be more finished, it's looking so good as is and I'm sure it will become one of the greatest games of all time.
Realy impressive work again dude, really hyped to see what this game becomes
It would help a lot if you optimize world generation. I thought of a way to do that. For all the blocks that aren't within or near the visable slice, it would only generate the shape of the world, & not generate the material of the world. It would also maybe not convert the 3D height map to 4D but still make everything else 4D.
I've always watched these short videos about a 4d objects. Seeing a 4 landscape is so weird and fascinating!
Pretty sure my house still has holes in it.
can't wait to see where this game goes in the future
I am obsessed with this concept, it is absolutely mind boggling and I adore hearing more about it and being able to see the game’s progress.
Sadly I’m not a patron but I’ll still wait for the full game
Love how the credits' bug makes the game "unplayable" but still looks extremely cool.
Love this project. Can’t wait to see the final version.
this project is looking amazing, keep it up!
You sound so chill! $D Miner looks SUPER GOOD!
I look forward to seeing this project through
Mr Bernard is legit and his method works like magic I keep on earning every single week with his new strategy
Wow I' m just shock someone mentioned expert Mr Bernard I thought I'm the only one trading with him
he changed me recover all l lost trying to trade myself
He success story is everywhere
Who's this professional everyone is talking about I always see he post on top comment on every UA-cam video I watched
I think I'm interested how can I get in touch with Mr Bernard
I'm happy that the project still going on
I fricking love this new game/project your the best same as this game
I’m very excited to see the end result of this game
Good luck to the rest of designing and coding
nice stuff. it nice to see how much proccess your making
Thank you that you continue the development of this cool project!
I find it funny that we're depicting a 4D world in a 3D game displayed on 2D screens.
Dimensional inception, if you will.
This has to be one of the best attempts at 4D visualization. Insane work.
Oh man i can't wait for more features to be added! This game looks crazy fun!
4d objects make 3d shadows though i doubt that could be put in the game with how much processing power would need to make that happen and it might not be that visually appealing compared to normal shadows which matters more
You're still just seeing a 2d-slice of that shadow
I'm pretty sure the player is standing perpendicular to the plane, meaning that objects in another slice casting a shadow would still appear as flat shadows on the ground.
I was impressed by the earlier 4D Miner videos, but afterwards I felt that the lighting needed some work. Nice to see that this was one of the next things to be worked on. Lighting is probably more important to get right in a 4D environment than in a 3D one. For instance, being able to find holes in your house just by looking for bright spots.
This is such a fascinating game. I love seeing how all these bits are coming together!
Great vid! I will hope to see news about this project.
Impressive work man!!!
this channel is way to underated
I like to see electromagnetism and inertia as 4D aspects that cause an effect in our 3D world. I’m imagining a “redstone contraption” that makes a movement in one direction to cause a force field to appear in a different dimension…
looking forward to this great game, keep it up man
I love this update please
hurry and make a new devlog !!!
Sorry no Pressure.
theres gonna be a community creations vid first
I saw the announcement one discord and I clicked faster than how fast I clicked this video
I’m going to donate, I really love this concept, it’s something I’ve been looking for, I’d be happy if you keep updating it Xp
You can divide the display vertically into 10 parts. Each part contains the usual 3d game and is rotated by 4d angle relative to the next part
Looking great!
If you were to layer multiple 2d spaces on a Z axis, you'd get 3D space. But if you do the same again and layer 3D spaces on another axis you'd get a 4D space. This is the best way to understand another plane of reality in my opinion
yee were already making 2d blueprints of buildings using this method Cx
Looks more like Minecraft now good job!
I am really looking forward to this
This is awesome. Someone should make a show based on your idea. It would be interesting to see a story play out in the 4th dimension.
Idea: randomly generated structures based around 4 dimensionak shapes, like tessercats and Spherinders!
So hyped for this 😭😭
Love the work
Waow i love how the game is strating to have a lot of new things, i'm rlly rlly hyped for the future of this game, oh and i think the flat world is REALLY useful for poeple to train construction with 4D!!!!
The credits bug is the most wild thing I have ever seen.
great new video!
I really hope that this game is going to become big, its an amazing idea for a game.
Interesting game, it's looking really nice, good idea for the lighting though the factorization in dimensions from 3 to 4 jumps up quite quickly the more dimensions one increases.
with the goofy colors and stuff, it's gonna be a bit complicated to make this game look good or beautiful, it's not impossible tho! keep it up man, this has so many potential
the art do be giving off minecraft classic vibes Cx
Absolutely amazing
Wow. This is so confusing but interesting!!
It would be cool moving the 4D items later in the progression.
This is awesome!
Awesome update i hope you will someday add a multiplayer where people can be in a different place in the 4th dimension that would be awesome if its possible
I’ve never developed a game, but I can tell that this takes a lot of time, work, and effort. It’s an awesome idea put into an awesome simulation. I love the game so far, and I’m excited to see how far it will go! A small suggestion is for you to make the tool you are holding change looks whilst you scroll through the fourth-dimension.
npc
This is the kinda stuff that makes me believe math isn't totally useless.
This is so amazing!!!!!!
I'll probably become a patron when my salary comes in. What i'd like to see in the finished version is animals/npc's with lives and needs. Spiders that need to eat. Peasants that farm, make buildings, dig, plant, defend themselves etc.
I wonder if Mashpoe will add in a 4D Railroad for fast transportation across the fourth dimension.
the main weirdness is how to display it as you can now at one block have a 6way intersection
i like so much this project . i thanks person like you ho make project like this one.
I’d recommend making the death screen more minecraft-like by having a clear red/pink screen saying “You Died!” instead of the skull.
Love the Klein Bottle as the HP
This is sick
