Well, he says this now, but l remember an interview he did some years before this and he was eaten up with hatred and jealousy of the Beatles. He said ' l wanna hold your hand - what kind of song is that?' He then went on to compare his songs with the Beatles, to the detriment of the latter.

Nah - while it was way before my time, based on what I've read and seen, just about every aspiring musician knew that The Beach Boys (and Brian Wilson in particular) had something very unique and special. I have a suspicion that Capitol had trouble figuring out how to promote "Pet Sounds" and the more experimental direction they were taking to a wider audience, because unlike The Beatles - who were all very charismatic and gregarious individuals and as such could sell themselves - Brian was painfully shy, almost to the point of reclusiveness, and the camaraderie within the band was starting to fray.
It really was a friendly competition. This video is historic in that it reveals Brian's true feelings from initial jealousy to respect, appreciation and the desire to push each of the groups to greater heights. McCartney's feelings echoed Brian's. That's why Paul said the Beach Boys "God Only Knows" brought him to tears. He showed his creative appreciation by saying "he wished he wrote it." Both groups had the ultimate respect for each other. That's how it should be!
When my wife finally got to see Brian Wilson live in the noughties, she was so moved that she discretely removed her panties and 'ironically' flung them at the stage. Unfortunately they landed on the great man's head as he was at the piano, and dangled from his nose. The whole room went quiet, and the security guards twitched. Thankfully Brian Wilson saw the funny side, and wagged an admonishing finger at my wife before shaking off the panties and continuing with the song. After the show, my wife sent her apologies to the dressing room. Brian Wilson said not to worry: that he actually quite enjoyed it, as it reminded him of his halcyon days. Great guy.
And Beatles say much the same, being awed at first hearing of 'Pet Sounds'. A friendly rivalry in music experimentation. And we are all better off for the production ideas they came up with.

We didn't know what it all meant at that time but then, but then. . . it all happened. The Beatles changed musical history. And Brian, with his Beach Boys buddies, certainly did make a major contribution to that great collective effort of music for love, peace and fun!
The Beach boys were actually one of if not the first group to popularize the multi-guitar, electric bass and Drum ensemble. Before them most groups were just singers with a backing band, or a singer playing guitar, or a singing group with a backing lead sax etc. The BBs made popular the whole act as singers as a unit playing their own string instruments and drums. Not saying it hadn't been done but they popularized it with hit after hit in the early 1960s. Soon other groups followed the same pattern.
I believe it was in the mid 80s that The Beach Boys had a concert on the Memorial Day Weekend in Washington DC. I was pleasantly surprised to see Ringo Starr as their drummer playing and singing along. I said to my mother, “There you have it, America’s best with England’s best.”

Brian Wilson is so multifaceted. His mental health issues have been in the forefront for so long but he created so much amazing music and has always had a great attitude about things.
One genius talking about others - so gracious. Personally I don't think we have Brian for much longer reading the family's comments recently, what a tragic day that will be, and just watch his successors lay down their utter admiration for a once in a lifetime creative talent.
I can imagine that he would be jealous. A few years ago, I saw Brian in concert. The venue was half empty, but Bruce Springsteen was there, back stage. When he walked onto the stage to join Brian, it was a moment to remember. Case in point: show up and you'll be rewarded.
Brian has nothing to be jealous about, or apologize for. The Beach Boys' music has stood the test of time. He's weathered many a personal storm and came out fine.
Now I did find out Brian Wilson at first was jealous of the Beatles, he thought the Beach boys would be dropped off the charts and wouldn't be a hit. If the Beatles took over. So after when I want to hold your hand took the radio waves in America in 1964, early 1964 that is. Later on the Beach boys released I get around, and it became a major hit for them
Rubber Soul is my 2nd favorite Beatles album after Abbey Road. Every song on it is amazing in different ways. Instrumentation, harmonies, lyrics. Just a great freaking album.

Paul had Brian`s role in the Beatles. Paul was the main composer, while Lennon concentrated on the lyrics. Not that Lennon couldn`t write beautiful melodies, but he saw himself as a poet. Paul saw himself as a musician and a composer. That is why Brian and Paul loved each other. They understood what the other was doing. They also share the same birthday.
Scotland is the home of many inventions and although McCartney was from Liverpool and Wilson from America, their surnames are Scottish so we Scots are vicariously taking credit for the invention of their original music.
When he's talking about "Rubber Soul", hes talking about the AMERICAN version of "Rubber Soul", which was mostly acoustic. The effect of the American version is exactly as he describes: "It sounded like a collection of Beatle folk songs." The British version is electric, with some acoustic songs sprinkled in. The British starts with "Drive My Car", then "Norwegian Wood"; the American starts with "I've Just Seen A Face", then "Norwegian Wood". See the difference? It's more of a cohesive vibe and mood.....which matches the look of the album cover. The British features prominently electric songs like Drive My Car, Nowhere Man and If I Needed Someone. The American version held those off and instead substituted mellow acoustic "Beatle folk tunes" like I've Just Seen A Face and It's Only Love (which are the side-openers). Those two songs were wasted, buried on side 2 of "Help" in the UK; here, they are prominent mood-setters. "Rubber Soul" is the one case where I prefer the American sequencing, it has a real feel to it. ("What Goes On" is a terrible side opener, I'll take "It's Only Love" any day over that. The lyrics to "It's Only Love" certainly fit much better with "Girl" and "I'm Looking Through You" and the rest of "Rubber Soul" than it does with early '65 recordings like "Tell Me What You See", "You Like Me Too Much" and "Dizzy Miss Lizzie".
I lived through the entire Beatles era and honestly, I really don't remember The Beach Boys being considered a rival. Yes they focused on harmony, but the songs were so different. Are you really gonna compare A Day in the Life to Good Vibrations? There were worlds apart.

Some kind of revisionist history going on for quite a while now...by the late 60's and early 70's the BB's were really almost considered an oldies band, squares, irrelevant - they WERE NOT all over the radio, way more people had Beatles records...not just my opinion, that's the way it was. No one started a band because of the Beach Boys, c'mon.
IMO, "Good Vibrations" is a far superior song than "A Day In The Life," which is a quite simple song with few chords. Basically Lennon at his laziest. Saved by Paul's middle and Ringo's drumming.

No, that story comes from Michael Vosse, who says he was in the car with Brian Wilson (both on drugs) to get food and when SFF came on the radio, both started laughing hysterically. That all coincided with the demise of Smile due to a lawsuit with Capitol, conflict with his father, drugs exacerbating his mental health issues, among other issues.
It had nothing to do with that song. Brian had already suffered from physical, mental, and emotional abuse from his father. Add that to the pressure from Capitol Records and the fact that Brian was doing it all, producing, arranging, writing, etc. Plus, he was still way ahead of the game with what would have been the Smile album, but too much was happening around him all at once.
Brian's evaluation of Rubber Soul as like collection of Beatle folk songs is same as I felt: we both had the American pressing, which was very different than English. Less rock sound. The one time I liked the US version better: it seemed to be more of a "whole" than a "mix" of different styles
The first time Brian heard the Rubber Soul LP in Dec 1965 was most likely the US Capitol version. They removed the rockier songs and added 2 acoustic tracks from the UK Help LP. Drive My Car, Nowhere Man, What Goes On and If I Needed Someone we’re held over to be added on to the next Capitol LP.

There's a story that Brian Wilson and John Lennon were in the same party and Brian asked Alice Cooper if he could introduce him to John. After he did so, John replied very kindly but later told Alice that was the umpteenth time Brian had asked. It was clear Brian was not mentally stable at this time but John Lennon handled it with the grace and decency you'd expect. Look up Otis Gibbs UA-cam channel as he has a full video on it. But without doubt, Brian Wilson is a genius.

As for the beach boys, they are a genius band and Brian Wilson is an absolute genius. His body of work proves that. Lennon can't touch McCartney or Wilson when it comes to creativity, he's way, way behind. Put it this way, McCartney could be the Beatles without Lennon but not vice versa.
The American version of Rubber Soul though, not the British one, was the one Brian heard. They were radically different. Ironic that he thought it worked so well as an album when it wasn't the one compiled by the Beatles and George Martin. I think 'Drive My Car' wasn't on it. Always thought that was a weak opener.

Brian Wilson is a genius. It`s too bad he had to struggle with his cousin Mike Love who even took credit for much of Brians work as if they were equals.. Mike Love could NEVER have written a wonderful tune like "God only knows" or "California girls" He only wanted to sing about silly things like "Be true to your school" and cars. Brian sang about love and passion for life. It would have been much easier for Brian if he had a partner like John Lennon like Paul had in the Beatles. An equally talented partner who understood what he was trying to do. But Brian was on his own, and it took all of his energy. Especially when Mike Love started complaining about "Pet sounds" etc.. That just proves how useless Mike is..
I kind of doubt that Brian was jealous of the Beatles because you can't hear any influence what so ever in the music of The Beach Boys. On the other hand you can hear a lot of influence in the music of Beatles of the Beach Boys (Because, Back In The USSR etc;)

I mean the similarity is glaring haha. Even down to the jangle pop guitar later in the song being similar to the ticket to ride main riff. They both inspired each other. It's just that the beatles inspiration can be mostly seen in beach boys early work and beatles vice versa. Though Beatles 1965 work onwards obviously inspired Brian in a general sense to reach for something just as special as rubber soul/revolver/sgt pepper. He definitely came close but obviously there's the whole thing about Smile not fully coming to fruition due to his mental health issues. Still what was eventually released was fantastic@@spactick
The Beatles were very clearly influenced by The Beach Boys on Paperback Writer as well. But I think the moment Brian Wilson heard The Beatles he immediately began planning on phasing out the car and surf songs on their albums.

Bob Dylan was the big influence with Lennon. But heck everyone writing lyrics at that point in the 60's had to reassess what they were doing after hearing 'Like a Rolling Stone'. No more teenage love songs or songs about school or cars etc; the music was growing up. And as a song writer, you either grew-up with it or became obsolete

I read somewhere that God Only Knows was the inspiration for Paul to write Here, There and Everywhere. One of my top 5 favourites of Paul’s.

It's more of a cohesive vibe and mood.....which matches the look of the album cover. The British features prominently electric songs like Drive My Car, Nowhere Man and If I Needed Someone. The American version held those off and instead substituted mellow acoustic "Beatle folk tunes" like I've Just Seen A Face and It's Only Love (which are the side-openers). Those two songs were wasted, buried on side 2 of "Help" in the UK; here, they are prominent mood-setters. "Rubber Soul" is the one case where I prefer the American sequencing, it has a real feel to it. ("What Goes On" is a terrible side opener, I'll take "It's Only Love" any day over that. The lyrics to "It's Only Love" certainly fit much better with "Girl" and "I'm Looking Through You" and the rest of "Rubber Soul" than it does with early '65 recordings like "Tell Me What You See", "You Like Me Too Much" and "Dizzy Miss Lizzie".

I lived through the entire Beatles era and honestly, I really don't remember The Beach Boys being considered a rival. Yes they focused on harmony, but the songs were so different. Are you really gonna compare A Day in the Life to Good Vibrations? There were worlds apart.
Totally agree! Some kind of revisionist history going on for quite a while now...by the late 60's and early 70's the BB's were really almost considered an oldies band, squares, irrelevant - they WERE NOT all over the radio, way more people had Beatles records...not just my opinion, that's the way it was. No one started a band because of the Beach Boys, c'mon.
Oh yeah, those BB songs were the nutritional equivalence of Wonder Bread, and also made in a factory by good union workers.
IMO, "Good Vibrations" is a far superior song than "A Day In The Life," which is a quite simple song with few chords. Basically Lennon at his laziest. Saved by Paul's middle and Ringo's drumming.
@@robrussell5329 agreed Lennon was professionally lazy, particularly after ‘66, but the artistry of DITL is miles above GV. So, Lennon in a medium lazy, can out create Wilson exponentially. Simple chords are not a dealbreaker, but sweet harmonies covering a nothing lyric made by ringers in a factory is not in the same league.

No, that story comes from Michael Vosse, who says he was in the car with Brian Wilson (both on drugs) to get food and when SFF came on the radio, both started laughing hysterically. That all coincided with the demise of Smile due to a lawsuit with Capitol, conflict with his father, drugs exacerbating his mental health issues, among other issues.
It had nothing to do with that song. Brian had already suffered from physical, mental, and emotional abuse from his father. Add that to the pressure from Capitol Records and the fact that Brian was doing it all, producing, arranging, writing, etc. Plus, he was still way ahead of the game with what would have been the Smile album, but too much was happening around him all at once.
I think it was George Martin who said the only real competition the Beatles had was the , Beachboys...

Brian's evaluation of Rubber Soul as like collection of Beatle folk songs is same as I felt: we both had the American pressing, which was very different than English. Less rock sound. The one time I liked the US version better: it seemed to be more of a "whole" than a "mix" of different styles
A writer and band that were totally inspired by Brian were XTC, fronted by main songwriter Andy Partridge.
The first time Brian heard the Rubber Soul LP in Dec 1965 was most likely the US Capitol version. They removed the rockier songs and added 2 acoustic tracks from the UK Help LP. Drive My Car, Nowhere Man, What Goes On and If I Needed Someone we’re held over to be added on to the next Capitol LP.
Brian has an amazing memory when it comes to dates, as the album was definitely released in December of 1965.
I have often said that John Lennon and Brian Wilson are the musical geniuses of my generation (Baby Boomer)!
Brian’s creativity had to go up against John’s, Paul’s & George’s creativity. Considering this, think Brian held his own pretty well.

There's a story that Brian Wilson and John Lennon were in the same party and Brian asked Alice Cooper if he could introduce him to John. After he did so, John replied very kindly but later told Alice that was the umpteenth time Brian had asked. It was clear Brian was not mentally stable at this time but John Lennon handled it with the grace and decency you'd expect. Look up Otis Gibbs UA-cam channel as he has a full video on it. But without doubt, Brian Wilson is a genius.

The American version of Rubber Soul though, not the British one, was the one Brian heard. They were radically different. Ironic that he thought it worked so well as an album when it wasn't the one compiled by the Beatles and George Martin. I think 'Drive My Car' wasn't on it. Always thought that was a weak opener.

Brian Wilson is a genius. It`s too bad he had to struggle with his cousin Mike Love who even took credit for much of Brians work as if they were equals.. Mike Love could NEVER have written a wonderful tune like "God only knows" or "California girls" He only wanted to sing about silly things like "Be true to your school" and cars. Brian sang about love and passion for life. It would have been much easier for Brian if he had a partner like John Lennon like Paul had in the Beatles. An equally talented partner who understood what he was trying to do. But Brian was on his own, and it took all of his energy. Especially when Mike Love started complaining about "Pet sounds" etc.. That just proves how useless Mike is..

I mean the similarity is glaring haha. Even down to the jangle pop guitar later in the song being similar to the ticket to ride main riff. They both inspired each other. It's just that the beatles inspiration can be mostly seen in beach boys early work and beatles vice versa. Though Beatles 1965 work onwards obviously inspired Brian in a general sense to reach for something just as special as rubber soul/revolver/sgt pepper. He definitely came close but obviously there's the whole thing about Smile not fully coming to fruition due to his mental health issues. Still what was eventually released was fantastic@@spactick
The Beatles were very clearly influenced by The Beach Boys on Paperback Writer as well. But I think the moment Brian Wilson heard The Beatles he immediately began planning on phasing out the car and surf songs on their albums.
