As someone who loves and has no issue with the current crest, my main hope was that the new one wouldn't be terrible. And it's not. It's good. (Especially the complete lack of identifiers outside of the "19 74".)
But I gotta say, each day it grows on me a little more.
(Also, yeah 2016 sleeves were weird lol)

      That’s true… it’s not bad… but not great either

I like the new design. It looks good and it still keeps the core of the crest from 2009. However, i think that the crest from 2009 was one of the best in the league and i dont think this a improvement.

New subscriber. What a great video. I enjoyed the time you took to go over other possible logos and the throwback speech of the team. As a Sounders fan it was fantastic.

unlike many i love minimalistic logos too however this crest is too minimal and as an orlando city fan, (but also a ruidiaz fan 🇵🇪) i love the old 2009 crest a lot more.
i must admit that neon sign of the crest does change my mind a little but i would still much rather prefer the older one coming from on a non sounders fan

I love it. Our needle, birth year, and colors are all we need. We are the oldest and most successful team in the city, yet we compete for notoriety with Seahawks, Mariners, Kraken, Storm(kinda?), and hopefully the Sonics. But if anyone sees a badge with a spaceneedle on it, they already know.

As an FC Cincinnati fan, I absolutely despise this. I hate Seattle with a passion. The refs are in their favor, they flop, and I just don't like them. BUT... The one thing I respected about their club was the badge. It was beautiful and perfect. This new badge is an absolute abomination. Not only is it hideous, but It replaced an iconic and genuinely amazing badge that should never have been changed. I am very surprised there's barely any backlash because this rebrand just blatantly sucks. I hope my club never does anything this stupid.

    • @soccersentry
      @soccersentry  10 місяців тому +2

Appreciate the comment! Clearly, I disagree about the crest and the refs. BUT to be fair, I did see Ruidiaz flop more often when he was on the field this season. And hey, no worries, FC Cincinnati does have a good badge. They shouldn't have to change it for a long long time.

There are so many factors, but I’ll do my best to summarize my opinion.
      1. MLS is a new league compared to many of the other professional soccer leagues.
MLS began play in 1996, so we only have one generational turn of people who grew up with it and now bring their kids to matches. That’s part of how fandom spreads, I think. About a third of MLS clubs didn’t exist 10 years ago. Liga MX was founded in 1943, so bonds with MLS clubs just haven’t had as many years to form. Certain teams that are spiritual successors to their NASL versions, like the Portland Timbers and Seattle Sounders are the exception. But the English soccer pyramid by comparison has some clubs more than 150 years old, though the game was much different back then.
      2. Though Soccer popularity is at an all time high, MLS isn’t the most popular league.
This probably has more to do with streaming numbers and TV ratings, but it’s worth consideration. While I do think MLS as a league currently has the highest level of play and presentation in its history, it is not yet a high enough quality league to draw consistent attention away from the Top 5 European leagues (EPL, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga, Ligue 1). The EPL is the undisputed top league in the world. MLS, depending on the metrics you prioritize, usually sits around #15 globally. But there are american soccer fans who just want to watch the highest quality players in the biggest matches in the world, and I think that’s fine. I follow the NFL, but as things stand will never go to a UFL game. There are also some soccer fans who just follow the US national team and American players abroad. To me, that sounds like a personal hell one puts themselves in, but soccer is such that there is a place for them. There’s a place for everyone to enjoy the sport as they wish. I think American players' presence in Europe has grown the popularity of soccer in general because MLS is downstream from that. MLS benefits as they invest in the academy structure, as the MLS to Europe pipeline strengthens, but the Top 5 leagues are in some regards competition.
      3. The Stadium Dilemma
There are still 7 of 29 MLS clubs that do not have soccer-specific stadiums. That I think leads to perceived low attendance in larger American football stadiums for MLS clubs. Though, to be fair, Seattle and Atlanta are in large mixed-purpose stadiums, and they have great attendance. Capacity is one thing, but the location and accessibility of a stadium relative to the urban area it occupies is another. From there, you get into a conversation about city ordinance and local politics, but having a relatively close, accessible, high quality stadium has not historically been a given in MLS. The new soccer-specific stadiums are absolutely wonderful, but there’s more to be improved in that respect. Chicago Fire played in Bridgeview, IL for 14 seasons.Bridgeview is a 30 minute drive and 1.5 hours by public transport from Downtown Chicago. Lower.com Field is a 6 min drive from Downtown Columbus. Some of this comes down to constraints for certain cities, but it’s definitely a factor on matchday. Chicago Fire now play at Soldier Field in hopes of increasing accessibility and their presence in the city.
      4. The NFL comparison
I’m not very familiar with the NBA, so I’ll just speak to the NFL comparison. The NFL, founded in 1921, like Liga MX and the EPL benefits from its age and therefore its integration into cities and sports culture. But more importantly, the highest number of meaningful games that an NFL team can play is 21 in a year. MLS clubs by comparison play 34 matches plus up to 50 to 60 if they make deep tournament runs. So if I’m an average fan I want to see the Seattle Seahawks I have probably have 17 not at least 40 realistic opportunities to see them, so attendance will be more concentrated in that way. I don’t know that this is a major factor, especially since the NBA has an 82 game season, but it’s at least a thought.
      5. Attendance is not great, but pretty good and sometimes really good.
Of course, it depends on what metrics you use and what metrics you care about, but MLS is #7 globally for average match attendance for a professional soccer league. There are teams with great attendance (Atlanta United, Seattle Sounders) and there are team with poor attendance (Chicago Fire, Vancouver Whitecaps), but the average is in an okay place with room to improve.
      6. Academies
I would also say that the fact that the academy structure to develop talent is itself still developing. Where Basketball and Football have long standing academies in the form of grade school, high school, and college programs that are basically everywhere, that's not really been the case with soccer. We are only now on a greater scale seeing the benefits from investments US soccer and MLS made years ago. This works to not only develop talent, but to open up opportunities for those on the management side. But the whole system needs more investment, more resources, more success stories. We have a long way to go, but there is a foundation there now that wasn't.
