    Important Notes About This Video:
I talk about not being able to turn off the cabsim with the Origin Effects BassRig. That's not entirely accurate, and I should have clarified what I meant. You can turn off the cab sim, but only when the pedal is bypassed. So it's possible to get a completely clean DI signal (something I failed to do in the "clean" portion of the video) by switching the toggle to "FX" and bypassing the pedal. My basic point still stands though: It would be even more of a killer pedal if you could use the EQ and the rest of the pedal without the cabsim on. People have commented that you can turn it off on the 1/4 inch output, but then we're not talking about it being a DI.
I'm sure this list of corrections will grow... I'll update as and when things come up.

This confirms that the tone is in your hands, your technique. All sounded great in your hands! It is hard to perceive through UA-cam all the nuances of each one. I love my Aguilar Tonehammer and my Caveman BP1-C and for pure DIs you can’t go wrong with the Rupert Neve DI (RNDI) and the Khan VTDI (tube DI). Would love to try the Sushi Box and perhaps the Noble - but it’s hard to justify the price and waiting time. Loved the interviews! Thank you Janek!

A lot of his tones with the band were incredibly bland (the Tech 21 in the beginning for example, he didn't even have any blend to let the tube sound come through).
I guess thats fine if you clicked on the vid to see exclusively a DI box and nothing more, but the demos in the band context its like he purposefully just showed how they sounded without letting any of the DI's character come through.

Really love that the whole point of this is letting the preamp/DI be what you want. Want a clean, transparent signal? Go with MXR or Radial. Want the saturation or characteristics of something? Go with the Noble or Colorbox

The DI that stood out for me was the JHS Color box. It had a certain character that just was different in the mix. Maybe it was because you were most happy with it tho.
Owning the Classic Sansamp, the Aguilar and a radial DI. Love them for different reasons! :)
Anyway, thanks for the shootout. Helped a lot. :)

I bought the Colour Box v2 a year ago because it’s an amazing shaper for any sound, not just bass. I love it. I’m glad i invested in it, i put it on keyboards, guitar, anything. I’m not surprised that most members of Beck’s touring band have one.

The Origin effect, you can turn of the cab sim when the pedal is not engaged. It's de switch on the lower left corner.
PLus if you use the signal from the "amp out" instead of the DI Out, there is no cab simulation applied to that one.

    • @janekgwizdala
      @janekgwizdala  4 місяці тому +4

I just pinned a comment addressing this at the top of the comments section.
I should have been clearer in the video. My main issue was that you can't actually use the pedal's features without the cabsim engaged. And if you do use the 1/4 inch out, it's not an XLR/DI situation anymore, and isn't applicable for this video.

For just a straight DI on its own, the JDI is what I would go for, it's just simple and it sounds great. The teletronix sounds great too.
I'm suprised to see no one down here talking about the MXR? I thought it was one of the best sounding of the preamp/di ones here, and for the price, size, and amount of control it's killer. The MXR and the Tone Hammer were my two favorites of the video, and they're very affordable. And to my ear, I don't hear a big enough difference in the tones on most of the $$$ ones to even remotely justify the price. Like I'm jumping back and forth between the MXR, tone hammer, REDDI, and Noble - In the mix there hardly any distinguishable difference, with really good headphones.

A masterful addition to the foundational archives.
Not reamping a single cut through each pedal and actively responding to each DI individually speaks to your dedication.
I recently watched Conrad's DI shootout and I think his higer gain settings on the Colourbox did a disservice. Finding a similar character profile in each DI is fair competition. Well done Janek.

I love that the box all the engineers recommend (the JDI) is also among the simplest and cheapest. :) To me it always does surprisingly well in shootouts like this because it has great mid range clarity and doesn't hype anything. I also really like the character of the REDDI (FWIW I own a REDDI and used to have a JDI).

Absolutely outstanding work Janek, to be honest nothing sounded below par. Based on your previous excellent video recommendations I’m currently using the Caveman BP1 Compact, a Miura M2, HX Stomp, a BugCrusher, MXR mini Octaver and a Gojira Tremolo pedal. I actually use a JHS buffer rather than the EP Booster only because it was a steal.
I was impressed with DG Microtubes X I wasn’t expecting it to be so clean. I had a Capo but I couldn’t be bothered with all the knobs. Had a U5 which was great but a pain to move around. I would definitely use Phil Mann’s Sushi Box Finally love the warmth.
I think the JHS Colour Box is an excellent choice like having a couple channel strips on a DI box that’s nice and small.
Thanks for all the hard work brother

Janek… holy guacamole!!!! Thank you so much for this video! I know this video wasn’t specifically for me but I feel like every question that I asked in your previous video was answered and more!
I’ve listened to each pedal through my headphones and through my car speakers (multiple times haha). Crazy enough, I still LOVE the Jule Simone’s handling of the tone/frequencies the most! I honestly thought my mind would change or that I would like a different DI preamp better. Buuuut that didn’t happen. I have to get one now! Hopefully I’ll save the monies for it sooner than later!
Three of the other pedals that I really like: Miura K3, A Design REDDI and Caveman Audio BP1! To me these pedals sounded similar to the Jule Simone; thick and full low/low-mids with pronounced and present high-mids without being too clanky in the highs (or that is how I would attempt to explain what I heard).
The phone interviews/conversations were AMAZING!!!! Very informative and super cool to hear the perspective of other super seasoned pros! This truly was more than I hoped for when I posted the questions that I did! It makes me happy that I was able to grab a new Radial JDI recently. Again, I know others asked similar (if not the same) questions but I must say thank you for covering what you did in those phone calls!
Lastly, this video is truly a gift! It is so hard (for me, at least) to find guitar stores that carries a wide range of pedals. It is pretty awesome to be able to hear these pedals before investing into them. Your video and audio quality makes this experience that much better! It was also awesome that you included more affordable pedals! This video is truly THE BIGGEST (AND BEST in my opinion) DI shootout video and what a joy it was watching this video from start to finish!

My small range of experience tells me that the input impedence is important. An input impedence of less than a megaohm takes away the air. I'm a luthier so I often get to test basses without the volume potentiometer in circuit. Without that 250kohm or 500kohm to ground the sound is always more open.

Amazing comparison! I sometimes use my aguilar tone hammer in the middle of a signal chain that goes to an amp, or even just as a pre and at the end of the chain a JDI. That leaves space for some pedals that can benefit from the extra punch of the pre, and some reverbs, choruses and other effects react differently if you hit them with bumps in the eq instead of eq-ing after the effect.

The MXR really is a great piece of engineering. I did some of my shootouts and it was actually very similar to the Sadowsky preamp. It has the exact same EQ points in the bass and treble, with the sweepable mids. It's very transparent and great for dialing in the sound as needed with all those features. It's perfect for my upright, and I use it tame the piezo pickup and give the extra output it needs. I often use both the XLR and 1/4" outs with great results.

Next it would be lovely to see a comparison between a an high-grade Pre/DI specifically designed for bass and high grade studio preamps like Neve, API, SSL, etc… that said, I enjoyed the Capo, Reddi, Noble and Teletronix the most. They sound all quite different, but they have their own thing. It’s hard to pick one. While there is a light difference in color, what I hear is mostly a difference in dynamics, with the volume balance between the high and low strings changing quite a bit with each pedal.

My remarks: Simone by Jule, Ampeg SGT-DI, K3 Miura, Jad Freer Capo, Darkglass Electronics Microtubes, Walrus Audio Badwater, Sushi Box Finally V2... all quite good.
The others sounded relatively undistinctive, farty/weak/not-so-forgiving, and other less than favorable audio adjectives.
My Top Four (4) choices perceivedly sound 'turned up and masterfully close mic'd amp-like'...
The Ampeg is the winner with respect to price-performance ratio. Yamaha knocked that one out of the park.

The JDI sounds amazing and one of his advantages is the superior isolation against active DIs. Passive and with an huge transformer. A truly trouble saver live.

As a colourbox user myself a nice feature is if you turn it off the transformer still does nice things to your tone!
On I really like it and a nice musical eq that stays coherent even with strong boosts and cuts- I actually like not having numbers on it as I dial it in by ear. A kinda pultec trick with the HPF and hefty bass boost also nice ….
Apart from that JDI, Simone, Teletronix sounded nice.
Some of the other highly regarded ones surprisingly did nothing for me!

  • @thomascordery7951
    @thomascordery7951 3 місяці тому

My take on high quality passive DIs with a passive bass is they're really great, maybe even the best, given one of two conditions. The advantage of a passive DI lies in its absolute simplicity, with absolutely minimal circuitry added to the signal chain. What makes for a truly great passive unit is simply the quality of the transformer, because there's nothing else being added to the signal chain.
The wonderful simplicity of a passive DI brings with it one important limitation. That is that there's no audio transformer that will reflect a high 1M ohm impedance back to the pickup. The lower impedance that the pickup will see when connected straight into the transformer will load the its serial inductance such that the connection will be filtering out high frequencies to some degree.
So that brings up the first condition in which that passive box may be the best choice; that is if the bass tone doesn't require those frequencies. For example, most of James Jamerson's Motown recordings were famously made with his P bass plugged straight into the board through a passive DI.
Here's the second condition where a really good passive unit is the best choice; that is where the bass signal has already been buffered by circuitry ahead of the DI. That buffer could be simply the circuitry built into an active bass, or it could be any active circuit that's between the bass and the DI, whether that's in the form of a stand alone external buffer, preamp, pedals with active circuitry, or just the amp itself. In all those situations the input circuit of an active DI is redundant, and while that circuitry might not add any noticeable amount of noise, band limitation or distortion to the signal, it's an unneeded complication.

There were so many units that didn’t make the cut… but I would have been waiting months to even have a chance of getting literally “everything” out there. I would have liked to include the neve designs, BAE, Avalon U5, Zod…

@@borgesguerardi the U5 used to be part of my main rig 20 years ago. U5 into a power amp, and that was it. Pure tone, pure power.
Totally impractical as a bass rig for gigging in New York City without owning a car though… so it went the way of the dodo and I eventually started endorsing fender amps.
Really wish I’d never sold the U5 though. 😢

Great video and fantastic playing but I was really, really surprised there’s no Avalon U5 in the test. So many rare, exotic units made the cut while one of the most popular and wildly used DI boxes in the world, both in studio and on stage was not featured. That said, I really enjoyed the video and I really appreciate learning about and hearing some of the boxes I’ve never had a chance to try.

My favorite live DI for use with effects is the Khan VTDI. It has a little color, which is also in the 1/4" output. So, it's also useful to spice up meh backline amps.

    JDI is a classic.
I would point out the origin effects super vintage cab sim is only on the xlr out. You can use it without the cab sim using the 1/4” out. They also have the 64 black panel and dcx bass the cab sim is designed so you can run any other pre amp into the super vintages cab sim.
Video got me curious about the JHS. I’ll might have to get one. I kind of wrote it off because in the few demos I saw with the bass it was dirty sounding in a way I didn’t care for.

I totally get that you can use it without the cab sim on the 1/4 inch output, and I should have made that distinction in the video, but since this is an XLR/DI specific video, that was the parameter I was judging it on.
It’s really a head scratcher as to why you can’t turn it off on the XLR. It would take the unit to a while other level.

Thanks for the video. I would go to store and try them all. If some not available order online making sure they have decent return policy. With all due respect to Janek and his work I did not see any setting variation so I don't know how those pedals would behave if I turn low, mid, high up/ down. Other than that I would put things like Noble aside right away no matter how good or bad it sounds- it's insanely expensive and for that amount of money I would get something more useful ...but it's me...

Awesome video! The Radial JDI sounded really good - goes to show, simple and good is simply good! I use the Origin Effects Bass Rig because I want the saturation/dirt/drive blended in - even for (especially for) mellow tunes and soul/disco, I don't use the DI out of it (not galvanically isolated so the ground lift doesn't really work as you'd expect from a proper DI box which you only find out on gigs where you really need it...), I run it into a Radial Stage Bug v2. I have gear lust for a Nobel, they look so flippin' cool. Thank you for the video, super interesting and helpful

    Have to say for me:
    Noble
    SB Finally v2
    OE Bass Rig
    Radial TDI
These four stand head and shoulders above the rest for what I like in a bass tone. They just sound “nice”, harmonically complex, have pleasing top ends, and have just a little hint of compression to them. Any of these four plus a cali76CB would be a nearly unbeatable “clean” tone for me.
Additional props to SB Finally v2 - it’s cheap enough for the quality that I’ve very seriously consider putting in on my board after my helix if I wasn’t running into tubes anyways.
