  • In this video, I'll show you the pros and cons of individual pedals vs. multi-effects. I'll take you through my journey of using pedals and the different pedalboards I've built along the way. I'll reveal a hidden feature of the Line6 HX Stomp that no one is using and give away the patch for free. I'll also talk about the cost and versatility of multi-effects and how it can potentially save you money. I'll also share my signal chain preference and how I've traveled with my pedals through the years. Don't forget to subscribe and like this video to help me reach 100k subs by April 2023. I'll be reading all comments left in the first 48 hours and answering your pedal-related questions. Help me beat the last video's record of almost 4k likes by reaching 5k on this video.

Excellent video. I’m working on rebuilding my pedal setup, and the HX Stomp has been my centrepiece idea, with a drive, a compressor, and an OC-2 as my only analog pedals. Hearing how people have been using the thing since it came out is giving me confidence in my plans with it. So, thank you!

Hi Janek, I've been following your channel since day 0 and I can only imagine how much work went into this video, it's great to watch and is super inspiring. Also, given how popular Stomp is, sharing some preset from time to time (even in a form of like regular segment) seems like amazing idea to attract new viewers, engage existing ones, and have another differentiator from other channels.

Great video! The HX Stomp is a must-have pedal in my opinion - the versatility of it makes it useful for just about any setup. I use it as an interface, headphones rig, pedalboard, backup amp, outboard effect, standalone drone/noise machine, and an all-in-one live direct guitar rig. Decided to limit myself to the effects contained in it so that I learn to master all of the sounds possible, and I still find interesting new sound design ideas available all the time. Snapshots are also an incredibly powerful feature that allow you to do things that traditional stomp boxes can only dream of

@@Thomas.harding You might try looking up videos of HX Effects if you want to hear the Helix effects into an amp rather than DI
I love my HX Stomp with an amp. I compared it to a few expensive boutique pedals and it sounded every bit as good with some tweaking imo
at the risk of sounding like ad copy, Line 6 has made some of the most iconic effects of all time like the DL4, FM4, Echo Park, Zerbzilla, M series, etc. Just check out the list of artists and session musicians that have used the DL4 and the M5/9/13 is like a who's-who list lol. safe to say you're in good hands with Line 6 when it comes to effects, despite what disgruntled corksniffers on dusty old guitar forums like to say lol

I needed a little “push” to direct me to the HX Stomp. Looks like I’m headed that way now. Many thanks! As a Line 6 user on guitar but not yet on bass, it seems like using the HX for bass is very smart way to simplify and expand at the same time. 👍

I switched to individual pedals about 6-7 years ago. The main motivation was more direct control when playing live, which I was doing a lot at the time. No venue or system ever sounds the same, and having things like simple EQ and reverb controls at hand just makes for a much better gigging experience. But aside from that, the bulk, cost, and potential power issues with individual pedal boards are all negatives. I believe that multi-effects are the best starting point for most setups. The quality of these latest generation MFX units puts them on par with many high end single effects, at a much better price point. Another plus for HX Stomp is that you can use it as an audio interface, potentially eliminating one more piece of gear to drag along on the road.

For use at home or in rehersal room i prefer simple pedals because i have easy access to all controls without messing around in menus and sub-menus.
But for travelling on tour and playing the same tracks every evening a midi-controlled multi-fx is certainly cheaper and easier when all the necessary sounds are set up in these menus.

You are a constant inspiration to me. While I have a few pieces like my Diamond BCP compressor that are never going anywhere, I love that the HX Stomp gets better with each new firmware update, gives me access to so many signal routing options, and lets me just shut up and play. At age 68, that has become far more attractive than chasing after the next new pedal sensation.

After so many years I am also building a professional board finally! I For Modulation I will be using the GFI Synesthesia. Delay/Reverb will be the Source Audio Collider. Bass Octave will be the MXR M288 Deluxe. EQ will be the Boss GEQ Bass EQ. Compression will come from the Cali 76. Preamp will be the Radial Bassbone. Tuner is the TC Polytune Mini 3. Distortion/Fuzz Will be the Source Audio After Shock. Envelope/Filter will be the MXR M82 Bass Envelope. I will also have a Dunlop Cry Baby, I will be using a Effect Switcher/MIDI Controller called the Boss ES-5. I want to use a Beatbuddy drum machine or possibly a looper but I have not decided which would be best. I am going to have five presets and I need some advice to help me get the right combinations. I play a lot of Motown, Rock, Gospel, funk (slap bass), Jazz and some country. I need to know where to use the compression, distortion, fuzz, to get the sounds I want. I guess I will have to keep one of the presets for some kind of clean sound. Here is a list of some of the artist and sounds that I like. Any help you could give me would be very much appreciated!
    1) Victor Wooten
    2) Andrew Gouche
    3) Jaco Pastorius
    4) Verdine White
I have several Basses to choose from.
    1) Fodera MG Imperial Elite
    2) Fodera Standard
    3) Fender Jazz (Passive)

Hi Janek, I saw you at Bix in Stuttgart, Germany in February 2020 with Bob Reynolds, just before the pandemic really hit. I approached you after the show and you were nice enough to chat a bit with me, even though you must have been extremely jetlagged. Thanks again for that, and I hope you play again there some time.
Thanks for the insight into your pedal board. Being a bit of a pedal nut myself, I at some point switched to using Source Audio pedals almost exclusively. The MIDI control turns the board basically into one big multi effects unit.
Good luck for the 100 K goal!

I'm leaning heavily toward a multi effects amp sim device. My choice is the Valeton Gp200 plus the odd favourite pedal or 2 in the fx loop. I'm done with invividual pedals all strung together.. Apart from the favs mentioned above I'll slowly but surely sell off the excess pedals I have (there are many) and they will easily pay for the Valeton. The sale will also pay for 2 FRFR powered speakers so I can go stereo for live work with Amp sims, IR's and effects.. I'll keep one valve amp, an orange tiny terror mini and 2 traditional speaker cabs.. That's it.. The rest can go..
Result new life with more time to play.!! No messing around with setups less cables to trip over no need for fancy power supplies etc etc.... I'll have a much easier to use streamlined and effective set of gear..
I feel much better now about the whole thing..

Prior to moving to Costa Rica almost 4 years ago, I sold all of my pedals and bought an HX Effects. It was a decent unit and I used it in many variations. It lasted 3 years before it glitched itself to death. I opted to go with some pedals this last Christmas. Walrus, Earthquaker, Wren and Cuff, TC Jauring overall. Much happier with the performance and tones.

I live just south of London and occasionally have a corporate party band gig where we're playing a maybe 50-60 songs ranging from the 50s till now and I'm limited to what I can carry on to a cramped train. A tuner, my Tone Hammer DI and the HX Stomp plus maybe an OC-2 or another wild card pedal on a Pedal Train Nano plus a 5 String Jazz Bass can pretty much cover all of the tone I need! That, and the fact that it's great for recording and practicing, has made the HX Stomp probably one of the most useful things the modern bassist can own.

As always, keep up the top notch work. You are a true inspiration and motivation. Oh, do you play much fretless these days. Dear Janek, thanks a lot for this very valuable content. What I would like to tell at this point is not entirely related to this content but I think it is quite important. I remember reading in one of your newsletter entries that you are planning to or are actually working on a biography; telling your life story and (presumably sharing the way in which your thinking, perception and values evolved as an artist). May I ask whether this book project is actually on? I think one of the reasons why people follow you is your permanent ability to recreate your motivation and always move forward. This is a rare quality many people admire; and it is relevant in many domains of life beyond music. I think reading your biography would give people more clues as to where to find and how to nourish this stimulation. Although you are extremely busy, I would at least like to mention that it will be a great pleasure to read a book about your life and philosophy of life....thanks once again for all the content, and your music...

Whatever backline I'm in, a high pass filter tunes the cab(s) to the room and the musical situation. Still like to spin my compressor knobs in the input and the dirt pedal is in the efffects loop. I've use the stomp XL as my only "pedal" on a tour, but I was playing through amps every night. I really don't like using amp modelers, or cab sim. There's something so forced and unnatural about it to my ear, that I'd rather just rely on the natural sound of my bass and my fingers, and go direct if there was no amp.

Hi Janek! Drummer here, so I just wanted to comment and applaud your video editing skills. They have certainly risen to meet the challenge of the 100K subs goal you've set and it shows! The scene transitions, background music, photo/video snippets when you reference past events, it all goes to create a story that is engaging to watch and relevant to the content you cover. I have no doubt that your audience is benefitting from the hard work that we don't see happening behind the scenes. The final product is (as always) uniquely Janek and very much appreciated! Of course single stompboxes will give you more flexibility. It's great for recording.
Multi effects shine on the road if you use a lot of effects. It's SO MUCH EASIER to carry around, less logistics an all. It's also easier to switch between 2 different types of sound. Single pedals would need a rack system with a MIDI controller to give you the sams flexibility.

5)how many subs to make you a coffee drinker???
Bonus point: you mentioned changing pedal board order while they are all slapped on the floor; there are some compact patchbay options such as the patchulator that can allow you to leave the layout fixed but adjust the signal flow in one location.

    Hi Janek great subject.
The power of individual pedals is in there simplicity and physical controls.
If you set up 10 pedals you probably have 30-40 discreet controls (Inc on/off).
    Fast easy intuitive.
Add in some parallel patching and a feedback loop to the start of the chain.
    Powerful and highly flexible.
Multi FX are amazing but require more brain power to operate and can lead to a nasty case of option paralysis.
Of course I am an amateur musician and don't have consider travel and many gigs 👍🤘😃😎

As soon as I hear laptop and bass mentioned in the same sentence for live sound… it’s a hard pass for me. There are so many more things to go wrong, and issues of latency unless you have the fastest and most expensive machine out there. And then your investment is out of date almost as soon as you’ve bought it.
Using a solid piece of hardware like the helix or axe fx will allow you to expand with software updates a little more often I think. I also just don’t know anyone using a laptop on a serious level to do the kinds of basic processing we need as bass players. Even my setup, which dives into the world of ambient/synth/sequencer/harmonizer programming doesn’t need a laptop.

Cool video. Interested to see how you meld older analog pedals with newer digital pedals. Is there volume or level issues. I'd like to add a multi for modulation type effects at the end of a fairly traditional analog board.

      @janekgwizdala  Рік тому

There can be gain structure issues on all kinds of boards, and especially when you mix old and new gear. One thing I love about the stomp is that all the input and output gains are adjustable on every preset. There's really no need to have any discrepancy between pedals and multi-fx anymore, IF you're willing to spend the time to tweak it.

I think a lot of people have the wrong mindset when approaching a multi fx. For me it's not about "can it emulate this specific pedal perfectly?". It's about "what can this pedal do and how can I use those sounds?". For example, the bass octave in the legacy pitch folder. Does it sound exactly like an Oc2? No. But does it have its own sound with its own useful features? YES! The tone control on it is incredibly useful when running into other effects, and it's for that reason that I find myself using it all the time. If I want an Oc2 sound, I'll use my mxr vintage octave, but if I just want a generic analog style octave with a versatile tone control, I'll use the hx stomp. And the same goes for so many other effects in that unit and other multi fx too.
Treat it like its own thing like you would with any other stand alone pedal and you won't be disappointed!

Wow! Whole another level of production. Congratulations Janek! Hope you hit those 100K ASAP! Always providing great and useful information for us.
Though I deeply admire your style, inovation, and the soundscapes you create, due to my preferences (and my pocket, another big reason) I stick to stomp boxes. I like to explore ALL their possibilities as I try to keep it simple. Eventhough I consider myself to be a gear-head and I also think pedal units are a NEED to play the kind of music I like, sometimes I feel overwhealmed by possibilities, and the last thing I want is pedals getting in the way when it comes to play/write music.
After reading and practicing (without a harmonizer/pitch shifter pedal) much of the stuff proposed in "Bass Players Guide to Looping" and having my brain totally melted by the things you play on "Mount Rushmore", I made the decision to gather the money for getting a Boss PS6 since it's impossible to buy a PS5 where I live. Despite I know, it's not the same as the PS5, and after watching some videos and reviews, can't get my head 100% around it. Is it more based on a Boss PS5 or a Whammy pedal by Digitech? I would really apreciate if you could share any thoughts about it.

    • @janekgwizdala
      @janekgwizdala  Рік тому +1

I don't know too much about the PS-6. Me and John Davis literally tossed a coin in the studio on a record date with Jojo Mayer for the 5 and the 6. Jojo had bought us both, and we each had to choose one. SO in the end, I never got to use the PS-6.
The sound I used the PS-5 for was never based around the whammy, and i think it came more from the old Roland "GR" guitar multi effects units.

Hello Janek, in my case, eventually I've managed to resolve most of my stuff with a GT-1000 Core, C4 Synth and Future Impact, and (still) working on a Morningstar MC6 Midi controller to govern them, not ready yet, but close. The Future Impact can be made to be a tone generator via midi note commands, so the MC6 can send note commands as a pedal keyboard (poor man's Taurus) and play (mostly pads in my case) while doing other stuff with the bass.. The Boss GT-1000- Core proved to be the best choice for me in this case, because it can have an active sound route without the bass on it, via divider/mixer switching. Gear might be the deepest rabbit hole of them all :D

Hi Janek. Your's work with effects has been and is a story. What is the suggestion for someone who has to start her/his trip now? Is Analog first and then integrating multi-effects? I had the impression using real analogue stuff could help you better understand the effects before moving to a more "cold" digital interface.

    • @janekgwizdala
      @janekgwizdala  Рік тому +1

I think it all depends on the means of the person asking. If you have the budget and the option to go and try a bunch of analogue pedals in a store before you buy them, I think it's a really nice way to get introduced to the nuance of what each pedal can do. But if money is an issue, a multi fx unit will give a person access to basically everything there is.
When you're starting out and have basically zero experience, you won't know the difference between the aesthetics of a digital vs analogue pedal anyway, so I don't think that beginner will really be bothered.
