Travis man, very helpful video. I just learned something about my AMPEG SGT-DI.... It's a great DI, very useful on stage and also I can use it for practicing solo....It mimics my old SVT amp which for many years was the gold standard for a rock bassist. I didn't quite understand the SGI controls until you clarified it for me. Very cool, thanks again! ZiggyB

    Currently using :
The Genzler Magellan bass DI, it is the best one I have ever had, at least to me, and the close runners up to that is the Aguilar tone Hammer (which I used to own), and a Sadowsky DI, (which I sold because I put a Sadowsky onboard pre-in my jazz bass instead)
The Genzler Magellan bass DI, has a vintage switch and a modern switch, the modern switch sounds very much to me like an SWR amp, or (Genzler/Genz Benz amp, and the vintage maybe sounds like a cleaner Ampeg or bassman (kinda), it has a really good and clean 4 band EQ circuit ,and it has a circuit to mildly cut out some of the sub-bass if it’s overwhelming, without sucking any tone, it literally is the cleanest sounding Bass DI , I have ever used, and it sounds very big, punchy and full at the same time.
I’ve tried it all, I’ve owned a sansamp, radial tone bone, Galien Kruger DI, etc…
I will never get rid of my Genzler Magellan.
The basses, I play sound great through it, my Ernie ball stingray special 5, my American Deluxe Fender Jazz bass V with Bartolini pick ups and Sadowsky preamp, and G&L L2500, play and sound very well through it.
The modern sound lends very well to gospel sounding stuff like (Israel Houghton) , R&B , Pop, and funk, and the vintage it’s great for rock and old Motown sounding stuff, It’s literally the jack of all trades.

For me, I like the old school P-Bass into the SansAmp Bass Driver sound. It just seems to work across a lot of genres, much like the P-Bass into an Ampeg did back in the day. I’m not really a slap or a pick player, so that sound tends to work for me.

I invested in the Electro-Harmonix Battalion. Though I seldom use it as a DI, the bass preamp is pretty cool. It has distortion, compression, and a noise gate. There are options for pre- and post- for the effects; and a 4 band rotary EQ. I'd love for you to take a look at it and let me know what you think. I'm normally a bass>cable>amp kind of guy, but I do love a pedal that motivates my creativity.

Recommend including the DSM Humboldt Bass Simplifier, or dpi by a separate review. After trying some of the units in your review and more, I found the DSM most faithful to my bass tone, while still having great flavour and a super flexible function set. The ReVolt and Ampeg were great, but in my experience compromised.

Great video. The order of editing could have been a bit different with you playing the clean sounds in between the info in each DI. Then a head to head comparison of the different DI’s for one style (maybe dirty or grit) before moving to a head to head comparions of a different style. Keep it up. Your content is engaging

I use 4. If I'm just playing bass I use the Noble. If I need distortion too, I'll take the 2 Notes Revolt Bass. If I need a few effects, I'll take the Zoom B6. If I am doubling on guitar, like I am on Sunday, I take the Hotone Ampero Stage.

Hey TD............I"ve been enjoying your channel and learning from you! You should check out the Aguilar Tone Hammer Pedal V2 that came out recently. I have really been liking it! It gives some great tones and some grit too! You should also check out the Aguilar AG Preamp Pedal. I haven't used the AG Preamp pedal but seems to have great clean headroom. Anyhow, I'd love to hear your thoughts on the Tone Hammer and AG Preamps!

Hello Travis, thank you for this review, I imagine it was a lot of work. I have the Ampeg SGT-DI as well. At first I used the Cab SIMs but eventually preferred the cleaner sound of the just the preamp, with Ultra Lo at mis point and Ultra Hi on. For the SGT circuit, I set it up to give a very mild grit plus a volume boost for build portion of the songs. Use if for practice and performance at church and love that I can plug my iPad into it and practice each week using Multitracks and/or Musicstand. I am currently comparing it to the Augilar AG Preamp.

Any verdict between this (SGT-DI) and AG?

    • @anthonyhall9453
      @anthonyhall9453 Місяць тому +1

@@telee19 If the AG sent the aux signal though the 1/4" TS Output as well as the mini TRS Headphone output, I would prefer it over the SGT-DI. I use this circuit path often to practice along with prerecorded music on my bass amp at home. I like that the AG is smaller than the SGT-DI, taking up less space on my pedalboard. The AG is a very clean sound and I do like it a lot. Please understand, I do like the SGT-DI as well. You cannot go wrong with either.

    • @telee19

@@anthonyhall9453 question, on the AG, does it send through XLR and headphones at the same time? I am thinking of using the headphones as monitor when send signal to the house.

@@joshdennis1 I rarely use that feature because I have a dedicated pedal for that. I find it kind of odd that most bass DIs come with an over drive or distortion built in. My goal with my DI pedal is to have my sound no matter what front of house system I’m plugged into. It’s last on my pedal board chain of course.

These are preamp pedals with a built in DI. DI stands for "direct input" and is intended to send a balanced line level signal from the instrument directly to the mixer. Terminology and technical imformation matters and you lose credibility and give the impression you dont know what youre talking about right from the start of your video.
