I have been playing guitar since 1973 just to let you know I have some experience with this. Very subjective but I would say that John is just as good of a guitar player as Eddie. Much more diverse, not as successful but that means nothing to me.

Respect for Wolfie just levelled up by a billion. Wolfgangs' tone, timing, technique, were indistinguishable to Eddy's. As great a guitarist as John Mayer is, this really was a wedding bands garden party rendition of Panama. You can tell Eddy didn't withhold any of his trade secrets from Wolfie.
I'd like to have a "deeper" appreciation of Belinda Carlisle of the Go-Go's. She could really "go down" and get those low notes. I think Mayer's cover was impaired because they were not quite EVH's tempo.
One of the first steps to being a good musician yourself is respecting other musicians and their trade. And learning to recognize when someone is just having a blast paying tribute to one of their influences. I see neither of these qualities in most of the commenters on this video. lol

A soundcheck is done before a show with no crowd. This was definitely in the middle of the actual show. And he did say it was for fun. I liked it. Not because it was so good but because he’s helping bring music I love to a new generation.

I think Eddie is one of the most unique and great rhythm guitar players of all time and were not even talking about his lead playing, Only thing is I never really loved Johns distortion tones. His clean tone is one of the all time greats though.

I think Van Halen would’ve been happy that people are still wanting playing his songs. Especially by a couple of popular young musicians. Halen was human just like the rest of us. And while I’m sure he understood the impact he had on the world, I would hope that he would’ve been humble enough to see that these are just a couple of guys having fun.

If you subtracted all the song/album/concert sales he's made to girls/women who adore him primarily because he's good-looking (whether they admit it to themselves or not), he would not have sold any more records than any other unknown indie artist. Actually Rocker Volt , I'm not a half bad song writer... PLUS I can (and do) compose symphonies, instrumental music, world music, and music for video games... And I mean full-time, for a living. He writes half-whispered, derivative pop songs for the ladies. He is however MUCH more good-looking than I, and it has served him well. I don't begrudge him his popularity. If I looked like a GAP model too, I'd probably go do the same thing.

It's like he said for them all to learn it because they're going to play it just for fun, and then he forgot to learn it before the gig but had some residual memory of how to play it from when he learned it in his bedroom 15 years ago lol. I think John did an awesome job covering this, Eddie is a monster to cover. I think Eddie is one of the most unique and great rhythm guitar players of all time and were not even talking about his lead playing, Only thing is I never really loved Johns distortion tones. His clean tone is one of the all time greats though.

I love that when the lead singer's crowdsurfing runs late, and he misses the cue back, Mayer comes in and takes on lead too.
I think Van Halen would’ve been happy that people are still wanting playing his songs. Especially by a couple of popular young musicians. Halen was human just like the rest of us. And while I’m sure he understood the impact he had on the world, I would hope that he would’ve been humble enough to see that these are just a couple of guys having fun.

If you subtracted all the song/album/concert sales he's made to girls/women who adore him primarily because he's good-looking (whether they admit it to themselves or not), he would not have sold any more records than any other unknown indie artist. (And just for the record, I AM better than him on guitar, however I am an ugly troll compared to him in the looks department).

John Mayer is far more than just a guitarist like you and me lol (even if you can play a little faster than him, and that means nothing), he's an incredible song writer and you/we are not.
Actually Rocker Volt , I'm not a half bad song writer... PLUS I can (and do) compose symphonies, instrumental music, world music, and music for video games... And I mean full-time, for a living. He writes half-whispered, derivative pop songs for the ladies. He is however MUCH more good-looking than I, and it has served him well. I don't begrudge him his popularity. If I looked like a GAP model too, I'd probably go do the same thing.
