Evolution Rage 4 chop saw review

  • The Evolution Rage 4 is a smaller version of their popular Rage 2 metal cutting chop saw. The Rage 4 is much smaller and is easy to carry virtually anywhere. Once carried to the job site it can be used to cut wood, metal or plastic with the supplied blade. This machine will be popular with people that need to be able to cut various materials without having to carry a huge chop saw to the job. In the video several test materials are cut with ease.

    Evolution were kind enough to send out this very handy Rage 4 for me to review. This machine is very compact making it easy to carry to the job site, but still has amazing power to cut its way through wood, metal and plastic with the supplied blade. The good news is that I have almost finished this years plant shut downs (1 week left) which will give me more time to make videos in the coming weeks. Thanks to everyone that watches the videos and comments, it is appreciated ;-)

      I've researched this saw high and low. Your video is the best out there by far. Much better than any of the promotional material (ahem... crap "music video") that Evolution itself puts out. I bought this saw after watching your video and I've posted about it to my Facebook groups. This is how sales are made nowadays. Frankly Evolution should be "kind enough" to send you a check and a lifetime supply of blades! Can't begin to convey how frustrating it is when you're looking for a niche-tool (and "light duty" variant of an industrial machine counts as "niche") and all you have to go on are photos. Your video hits the nail on the head and dead center too! Thank you again. Outstanding job.

    These blades last as long as the user goes easy and NOT slamming down on materials or forcing it through. I also have a cheap wicks 'Hoover' which was around £25 and apart from being a bit noisy, does a great job and very light compared to say a Henry.

    I have one of these that desperately needs a new set of brushes and brush plugs. It's had a right battering in the 2 or so years I've had it but it's handy. I like to use my Makita LC1230 because it's much heavier duty but this rage is so light and compact it's one of the handiest tools I have. especially when the job is in high rise blocks and its all stairs.
    Someone asked how long the blades last and I found (although this is no accurate figure) I'd get a good 3/4 months out of one while cutting 40x40 unistrust daily, and a lot of it, so to can definitely get plenty life out of one.

    Nice machine, question would be if you were to cut 1/4 inch steel all day how long do you think the blade would last before replacement. Just looking for some type of blade longevity here. Thanks...

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  8 років тому +1

      It should last a very long time. The Evolution blades last for ages if just cutting mild steel, to be completely honest I have only replaced one blade on my Rage 3 (which has done loads of work) and that was when I cut a piece of 316 stainless steel with it. Before I cut the stainless and ruined the blade it had cut some serious pieces of mild steel, such as this-

      Thanks for the comment ;-)

    • @curiosity2314
      @curiosity2314 8 років тому +2

      To dig deeper and by the way thanks for the answer, we are dealing steel on steel maybe you can explain how this longevity is achieved. Thanks...

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  8 років тому +1

      The evolution blades are steel but they are tipped with tungsten carbide, which is very though. This means you can easily cut mild steel. Evolution do make a special blade for cutting stainless steel for the larger evolution machines which work brilliantly.

      As long as it's mild steel studding and not stainless.

  • @agile1111

    No music no bullshit nice video. I cut aluminum square bar- are you using the aluminum blade or just using the same blade for everything? I guess I'm wondering if the mild steel blade also works well for aluminum bar?

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  2 роки тому

      I'm just using the general purpose blade, but Evolution make a special blade just for aluminium.
      The general purpose blade will cut aluminium, but if you are cutting a lot of it, I would get the dedicated blade. You probably already know this, but aluminium tends to stick to the teeth and blade, but you easily remove it by cutting through a piece of mild steel 👍

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  8 років тому

      Basically if you want to cut large amounts of metal or wood the Rage 2 is brilliant.
      If you want to cut metal or wood including wider pieces (including compound mitres) the Rage 3 sliding chopsaw is good.
      If you need portability and the ability to cut metal or wood the Rage 4 is perfect. There are a couple of videos here that might help you chose the correct machine-
      ua-cam.com/video/Orx676NXyws/v-deo.html
      ua-cam.com/video/2lJV3wFzAYI/v-deo.html
      You can also cut masonry on the Rage 2 or Rage 3 by fitting a diamond blade-

      @brukernavnfettsjit 8 років тому

      I watch all your videos, so I've seen those already :) It's got to be the number 2 or 3 for me. But it's a though choice. Larger cut capacity in height or width. I'm leaning towards the compound miter saw because of the versatility. But. Bet you the first thing I need to cut is a huge steel something that wont fit :p.I also have a high end sliding miter saw for my woodworking already, and they do take up some room as they cant stay close to a wall. I got some more thinking to do. Thanks for answering. I always enjoy your videos and learn lots from them.

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  8 років тому

      Thanks, yes its a very difficult choice.
      The Rage 3 is so versatile but the Rage 2 just eats metal for fun due to the larger blade.
      Good luck with the decision ;-)

  • @pee-jaysram1879

    okay, so i bought the saw for $230CDN with some apprehension...
    I’ve used it for cutting 1” x 0.100” & 2” x 0.100 / 0.125” SQ mild steel tube (and yes i realize 2” tube is larger than the max spec tube size). To cut the 2” size you need to cut 3/4 of the tube then rotate to cut through the remaining wall section...
    OE blade is not that great and i wore it out within about 50 cuts or so... bought a generic 40 tooth replacement and it works better but i only have a few cuts on it...
    The base is rather flimsy and i’ll be adding a few securing locations in the frame to affix it to a work bench...
    all in all i do not regret the purchase and it is serving its purpose for my light duty, home or garage usage...

      I've been cutting bricks with a 5.5amp 4-1/2" angle grinder for many years. It's a little weak and slow I know. But for small jobs to cut 10 or so bricks. I do like those bigger saws but man would be nice to have a little light weight compact saw. I do have a 12" Evo diamond blade I have not used yet. Sometime we even put a 7" diamond blade on a 4.5" angle grinder. not fun. Of course the bricks I would be cutting are the light core bricks, not the concrete pavers. We use a blockbuster for big paving jobs.

      If I'm cutting wood I would wear safety glasses and ear plugs, but if cutting metal I would use safety glasses, ear defenders and a full face visor. These machines are quite noisy when cutting metal which is why I use ear defenders rather then ear plugs when metal cutting.
