  • In this tutorial you will learn how to rigg first person shooter arms and gun inside blender 2.8. I will also cover limit constrains and rotation constrains in the tutorial .

    For those who couldn't move the rig properly as he did in 2:58, just do what he did next, which is increasing the chain length to 2. It solved it for me.

      3 hours i spend to figure out whats whrong.
      and it aint help.
      I dunno how - but he connected "side" bone and "main" bone, they connected, but it aint shown. Only after i connected them " Ctrl-P" it worked...

      This alone didn't fix it for me. See the Bone: -field in Inverse Kinematics, I specified the "external" bone there (Bone.023 for me at least) and after that it started working.

    People probably know this by now, but there's an option in Edit Mode called Symmetrize, which duplicates selected bones and flips them on the designated axis. This way, you don't need to manually duplicate and mirror the bones you already have.

      I forgot to mention: If you wish to use the Symmetrize feature, you must put .L or .R at the end of the bone name to assign it to the left side or right side of the body. Blender will automatically change the .L to .R and vice versa for symmetrized bones. Smart, right?

    When I separated the hand away 2:04 the hand is no longer connected to the tendons so when I got to the inverse kinematic step and I try pose the elbow bone it doesn't move the hand but when I grab the wrist bone it moves normally

      why to use elbow bone to position the hand ? use the hand bone to position the elbow as for first person shooter its more important to grab the gun so for that we use inverse kinematics which helps the whole arm to follow the hand to grip the gun, its really effective and speeds up your animation while posing .

    Maybe you could mention that it is pretty good to show the bone axis, since this makes it easier to fit the rotations

      Yeah i could have done that but sometimes it i feel the gizmo on my display make it look messy cause i only use short keys to rotate, it is a faster workflow for me.

    After duplication on 5:02 , how did you get the other finger bones to move accordingly? Did you do the same process you did for bone 18 and 19 to all the other finger bones and then duplicate the arm? Thank you btw, your video was very helpful!

    Why is the whole weapon model just one object, instead of having individual objects for the moving parts? Is that better this way?

      Yes, This is better for animating fps for games ,
      Cause in game players needs to switch guns and this method will help you in not only having more animation for one gun model but also will help to have different animation for a different gun .

    Great tutorial! It was a little fast, but I have learned a better way to rig the arms' controller. I never thought about using the root bone to center the gun; genius!
    I am also new to blender and a little unsure about the vertex groups and how to select them properly.
    Also I have recently created my own arms controller where I used drivers and the scale of a bone to bend fingers. I have found that this restricts me from bending just parts of the fingers. I am just curious if you or anyone else knows a way around that.

    7.42 if your weapon armature get deformed, moved or wrong scaled you didn't see he hit the set inverse button, there is also a blender bug preventing you from selection the arms bones : blender.stackexchange.com/questions/144872/unable-to-select-bones-in-pose-mode-blender-2-8

    i tried rigging the gun; i named all the armatures and the vertex groups to whatever one they were but when i try moving them nothing moves, and help?
    p.s. i did "ctrl-j" to join the gun parts, maybe that messed it up

      No, you just need to import the skeletal mesh only once then just need to import animations so that you can assign those animation on the idle state in any other gaming engine. Thanks :)

    3:20 no matter what I try the bone will not rotate with the other bone it just stays straight.
    nevermind, turns out I had the "bone" set to the wrong one because i thought you were supposed to set it to the bone that was copying, and now im upset because i've been trying things for 20 minutes.

      just do the same thing but just select the clothing mesh too it will bind it to the bones too . If you are having issue with the binding then i recommend you to watch some weight painting tutorials for the bones.

      You want to select whatever bone is that comes before it, his forefinger is bone 19 so he is choosing bone 18 to move it

    The second half of my rig won't mirror properly even though I've mirrored it on the right axis. The duplicated half comes out all mangled when mirrored. Please help!

      I got it now. I named all the bones and ended their names with a .R or .L (Right or Left) and then I selected the arm in edit mode, right-clicked and then pressed symmetrize. bada bing, bada boom.

      There are so many ways to do it . You can make the head boned parent of the hat.
      You can also rigged the hat while you are rigging the body so when it come to paint wieght you can easily use full wieght strength and apply it to the hat you need to do this while you have already selected the head bone. Same goes for any other asset .There are more ways to do it.

    i have made a high polly model of my hand (with hair simulation in blender) i have been trying to rig it for about 4 hours now i have been watching 7 tutorials and nothing works... the rig is in the right place but when i move a keypoint only the rig moves, the model dont move. i have a deadline tomorrow and i still have much work to do. if some of you guys have a soulution to the problem it whould mean the world to me.

    I don't know why but there are some very annoying differences with my gun. Link select doesn't work easily, it doesn't select as much as you expect it to. It means I have to manually select the parts of the gun for assigning vertex groups which is extremely tedious and difficult to get right (although I did go through with it). Is there a solution to this?
    edit: my gun also doesn't have any bullets
    edit 2: I'm having a third very odd issue, this one I have no idea how to resolve. There is an area inside the cylinder of the gun where, in object mode, there are extra edges which disappear from view when I switch to edit mode. Thus I am unable to select them and assign them to the cylinder vertex group.

      bro I can't even tell now what problem you are facing this tutorial was done in the developmental stages of blender and the version was 2.8 . Alot of shortkeys have changed . Will see if I can do a tutorial in 2.9 .
      I think may be in edit mode you have use hidden command and forgot to unhide all . Object mode shows it but if you enter in edit mode it will disappear try to press alt+h command to unhide it . May be it can solve it as I am not sure it could be another problem . I am not sure what problem you are facing do let me know . If this helped.

      first select the object and then cntrl m and define the axis X,Y,Z to mirror the object on the axis.

      Was using the r key to rotate the bones . But I have used limit rotation on fingers so that they can only rotate in the direction that I have not checked .

      I guess you need to reset the bones rotation value just press alt + R while you are in pose mode and also don't forget to select all the bones before doing it.

      @@SaqibHussain88 after adding bones and parenting them to the arm mesh the pinky finger is always weighted but the other things arent.

      I have seen this in several arm rigs i have tried. It will cause some issues in the game engine i want to work with.
