  • In this video, we do a pan-drop on a 845RE/8HP45 transmission in a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee V6 4x2. We cover tools used, quantity of fluid needed and, a little tip how to do this work without unbolting the transmission from the cross-member.
    Transmission fluid: amzn.to/3tEMx2Z (P/N 68218925AA)
    Pan, gasket and bolt kit: amzn.to/3tAGlJ4 (P/N 68218925AA yours may be different!)

    Great job on what I consider to be an overly complicated set up and service procedure. You are very methodical in your approach and have a lot of cool tools. I have a 2015 Chrysler 300C with the hemi engine, currently 34000 miles. Given the condition of the fluid you replaced I feel confident that my car could go that long without need for service. Thanks for being so thorough and providing good advice and commentary.

    Hi Joe, out of all the videos I've seen, this is the best because you make it simple and it works. I just have one question, in the final part of the procedure, did you go for a ride in the Jeep? Or did you shift gears with the brakes pressed while in the parking lot? And how should I make sure the jeep is in a good position to be able to put all the necessary oil into the transmission? thank you!!!!

    Great video. I changed the fluid and filter on my 2015 Grand Cherokee last week. Ordered the Mopar filter and all was going well until one of the pan bolts broke (in the corner - under the cross member). Tried to remove the bold using a bit of heat (propane torch) but was concerned about using an open flame. Put it back together with the old bolts (minus one) and so far-so good on the leaks. I'll check the fluid level when I change oil next month. Thanks for all your help with the videos.

    Just did this job today, It was a royal PITA since I did not have any hex wrenches available. Propped up the T-Case a few inches to gain more access. I went with Redline D6 for the fluid (it's red but the vehicle is out of warranty already) & supposed to be a superior fluid to the ZF/Mopar stuff as well as cheaper. D6 is popular in the Trackhawk/SRT8 scene. Great video!
    The pan I used to replace it does not have a drain plug for some reason? It's a Mopar part direct from the dealer so I guess that's a new thing. Perhaps trying to curb people from working on their vehicles even more I bet. I went ahead and installed new hardware as well + a new drain plug.

      I don't think it's a bad idea. It all depends on whether or not you trust Chrysler or the company that designed that transmission originally. The design is based off of the ZF 8HP, and if I recall correctly ZF wants you to change the fluid at approximately 60,000 miles. Chrysler says it's still for life under normal conditions

The owners manual doesnt say anything about the trans other than it takes Mopar atf+4 or equivalent. And the Haynes manual I have says all the transmissions that are in all jeeps in a given set of years models... But doesn't say which trans goes in which years or submodels...

    Hey Joe great video but..........Im a bit skeptical abut the level check at tranny temperature procedure. Don't you have to set the tranny on drive, rev up to certain rpms and hold it at second gear for about 5 seconds? That being said don't you have to raise the rear tires to do this?

    • @JoesGarageProductionsLLC
      @JoesGarageProductionsLLC  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you! Honestly I'm a bit skeptical of the true importance of that fluid check procedure in the service manual. I spoke to a transmission expert that confirmed my suspicion that as long as you get the fluid level reasonably close you'll be fine you just want to avoid drawing air up into the pump and you also want to avoid fluid aeration caused by contact with moving parts. That said the vehicle has been a daily driver since this video was shot and we've had zero problems

      I would not trust a run-of-the-mill lube shop to do this kind of work. This transmission requires a fairly specialized fluid that I doubt most shops would keep in stock. Really? Is that new? Regardless, I believe Maxlife is red in color. God forbid if I ever needed to make a transmission warranty claim, I am sure they would deny it if they saw red fluid - or, at the very least, I'd have more work to do to convince them it is an approved fluid. Technically, while ZF designed this transmission and licensed the design to Chrysler, the transmission was modified by Chrysler and Chrysler makes the 845RE. The 8HP80, on the other hand, I believe is purchased from ZF as-is. At least, it was as of a few years ago.

      Interesting. I have not heard that before. Can you provide the TSB number where you read that? Would like to do some further research.

    Is this Mopar fluid the same as the ZF Lifegard 8?

    • @JoesGarageProductionsLLC
      @JoesGarageProductionsLLC  2 роки тому

      I have heard that they are interchangeable, but don't know for sure. I suspect that Mopar buys the fluid from ZF, who probably paid an oil company to make a custom formulation. Everyone in that supply chain is probably taking a cut!

    Why not just drain and fill?
    Replace the pan every other time?

    • @JoesGarageProductionsLLC
      @JoesGarageProductionsLLC  3 роки тому +1

      That would probably work... I was a little hesitant here for two reasons:
      1. I had no idea how clean/dirty the filters and magnets were, so this was investigative as well.
      2. I wasn't sure if/how well the plastic drain plug would seal. It seemed pretty sturdy.

      My apologies. I just checked and it is copyrighted material. I can't redistribute it but you can buy it very inexpensively at alldatadiy.com. I believe an annual subscription is about $15 per vehicle per year. You can often find coupon codes that get you the same thing for $10 a year. Look at it this way if you spend the money and do this job yourself, it paid for itself 100 times over. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful

      It is pricey stuff... There might be aftermarket fluid available by now. I hear that the factory fill is really ZF Lifeguard 8, which is a little bit cheaper than the Mopar stuff I think.

    • @wilwiener

      You can do a fluid and filter change yourself 4 time and you won't be to the half way cost of that transmission. Do things cheap and they come back to haunt you
