Full replay from the ExCeL - North Arena 2 as Kayla Harrison (USA) defeats Gemma Gibbons (GBR) to win gold in the women's judo -78kg event at the London 2012 Olympic Games (2 August 2012).
Judo made its very first appearance at the Olympic Games in 1964 in Tokyo. However, it was not included in the Olympic programme in 1968 in Mexico City, but returned, never to leave again, at the 1972 Games in Munich. As for women's judo, it was added to the Games in 1992 in Barcelona.
Men and women now compete in seven weight categories. There was originally a men's category open to all weights, but this event was withdrawn after the 1984 Games in Los Angeles.

i guess the semi final took every bit of Gemma's energy back then, just by looking at her face one can tell how exhausted she was. 4 previous matchs and one of her opponents was judo champ at that time and she overcame all :D . Her moment of "i love you mom" brough me tears, so overwhelmingly emotional :) . Such a beauty rarely seen :) .

he should've given them time, it's only supposed to stop on the ground after 1) someone is pinned for a winning score in which case the match ends, or 2) there's no progression for like 5-10-ish seconds. Basically he isn't being a good ref because if he were, he'd allow the players to show that progress in the match could be made on the ground

Wow. Harrison with a judo gold. Getting caught up on the Olympics with the virus going on. Just watching the grabbing and tugging and jamming the holds and slapping them away. THAT must be seriously painful. The actual throws probably don't hurt, like that, but I'm not a judo knowledgeable person. Plus the training and stamina. One thing about Gibbons. Her hips are positioned too far away to take on her American opponent. If a judoka has to grapple, standing up, why would she want to 'bridge' space to spam an attempt?
