Full replay from the ExCeL - North Arena 2 as Kayla Harrison (USA) defeats Gemma Gibbons (GBR) to win gold in the women's judo -78kg event at the London 2012 Olympic Games (2 August 2012).
Judo made its very first appearance at the Olympic Games in 1964 in Tokyo. However, it was not included in the Olympic programme in 1968 in Mexico City, but returned, never to leave again, at the 1972 Games in Munich. As for women's judo, it was added to the Games in 1992 in Barcelona.
Men and women now compete in seven weight categories. There was originally a men's category open to all weights, but this event was withdrawn after the 1984 Games in Los Angeles.

And then 4-years later, she would win gold in Rio, proclaiming she is still QUEEN OF THE MAT!!!
Kayla is really inspirational as an athlete and as a person! She's overcome so much! I think she's my new favorite Judoka.
I knew her from college
Lol best punishment ever! poor murr! Or not poor murr
Lol poor murr!
Literally the only reason I’m watching this Judo match. Murr stood no chance at taking her down 🤣🤣🤣
Best part was the throw into the table with all the water cups.
Lmao
I like how USA focused on using Harai goshi. Like my sensei said "dont fear a man who practices million moves, fear a man who practice a single move a million times.
That's fron Bruce Lee originally
@@lMobiuscidl With modification as when rice said it he said a thousand times instead of a million.
All high level Judo practitioners will usually use a small amount of moves to win or dominate a fight…
@@DoomsdayIsComing73 fr, as long as you perfect the execution, everything will fall.
@@Babideeee sensei always used to tell us that if you “master the basics” you can win any fight! 👊🏼👊🏼Judo is such an underrated art, and I think many high level grapplers are starting to realize that Judo is a fantastic compliment to BJJ, and vice versa. I’m seeing a lot of young up and coming fighters here in Texas flocking to Judo gyms..
The coach yelling "Hey! Kayla!" every few seconds can't be but a distraction.
Jimmie coached her accurately sorry to say and she listened well. His instructions during the final minute was actually spot on.
Coach knows her more than u do.
More of a distraction than the PEDs she's on? Coin toss
You could tell by the look in their eyes before the match who was going to win.
Yup. British girl just looked shook
@@vincentstark7093 huh the British girl looked more calm. Kayla looked nervous
So you mean the one smacking her lips like a coke fiend was who you picked to win?
@@historyiwitness5915if you ask me that’s a valid way to see who wants it more.
i guess the semi final took every bit of Gemma's energy back then, just by looking at her face one can tell how exhausted she was. 4 previous matchs and one of her opponents was judo champ at that time and she overcame all :D . Her moment of "i love you mom" brough me tears, so overwhelmingly emotional :) . Such a beauty rarely seen :) .
Kayla was equally challenged-and tired. She didn't show it as much though.
Brilliant sportsmanship! Always nice to see competitors share the glory at the end and come out smiling, because when it all comes down to it everyone is lucky enough just to be there and compete, let alone win a medal, and Kayla and Gemma definitely deserve them.
How did she make 136 to fight Holly Holm
I cried for four hours after this.
Thank you for the Gold in 2012 and Gold in 2016.
You will be remembered and loved FOREVER in American Judo!
God bless you, Sister!
I thought they said ahe won silver?? So did she win a gold metal here or silver

She's doing well in MMA also.
She is UFC star now
Olympic judo was so cool to watch.
A riveting match! Just a great fight from both of them!
if you know anything about judo Kayla was dominating here oppenent constantly
Outstanding athlete, and great sportsmanship!
This match made me genuinely emotional.
Gemma Gibbons semi final was her moment. I guess she lost all her energy there.
Great fight, looking forward to Kayla fighting in Rio!
And she did it again!
at 7:05 when he says play judo I just shake my head
I watched this video after I heard about her argueing with Henry Cejudo about gold medals lol
The announcer talked more about the silver medalist than the winner.
American announcers talk more about tenth placed Americans than anyone else competing, so fair enough
@@cheekymonkeyali Not factual.
@@hyperlitestud I've seen this myself so I'm pretty sure it is
@@cheekymonkeyali the one time you saw it, was probably because the American is better in every way
@@hyperlitestud Don’t bother Europeans hate everything American for some reason.
I love the story behind both of these ladies and the obstacles both had to overcome in their personal lives just to get where they were. Both were deserving Gold medal winners but Harrison was able to find an extra gear when it was needed.. Beautiful ladies judoka
This was a year ago and still seems like yesterday. My family and I were in the stands when Kayla won. We will never forget this and neither will she. Gemma put up a heck of a fight but that French girl wore her down.
she's American son. whupping redcoat asses yet again. An American tradition.
Jimmy Pedro taught a very good student.
She’s also an MMA fighter , no WAY
kaylas confidence and inner belief in herself is so amazing. the mind can do anythinfb
Loudest voice in the building? Pedro.
mama bear with cubs. It was only 2-0, but it seemed like a mauling. She is so strong and aggressive, always going for a throw.
Michael phelps
Managed to get tickets for this day. Great to be part of Judo history. I heard some tickets were going for £2000 on the day!
That is really sad. I feel bad for her. Gemma's own countrymen are cheering for Kayla. 😢
Outstanding performance : )
And Murr had no clue what's going to come his way 🤣🤣🤣
What is the name of the song that played at the entrance of the judo athletes?
She played in all fights.
She is in mma now she's a beast
What is their walk-in hip-hop song? I can't remember it...
man i cant wait for these 2 to face each other in the UFC cause they are both headed there plus they are GORGEOUS BEAUTIFUL AND SMART TRIPLE THREAT IF THERE EVER WAS ONE U GO GIRLS LOVE U BOTH
WSOF KAYLA HARRISON NEW YEARS EVE!!!!! FIRST FIGHT.
great hand fighting and grip fighting tho
This was the best match of the entire olympics last year.
i love the two asians taking their photos at the end 🤣
Where do I find all the fights of Kayla Harrison in the Rio 2016 Olympics?
Congratulations Kayla .🎉🎉😊
Hell! They move fast!
Way to represent Kayla !!!
Harrison seemed to be so much more aggressive than Gibbons.
I feel like gibbons was tired and saving her energy for the last few seconds
Valid effort by these two gentlemen.
A great match.
Молодец Кайла!!!
Is there like only one move in judo?
This is emotional 😭 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Très beau combat de Kayla.
Call My Name - Cheryl Cole
MY GODMOTHER❤
she's awesome
Who is her Coach??
Kayla is 🤩 that close out was gracious 😅😂😂
0:20 what song is that playing? Anyone know?
Cheryl -Call my name
Go Kayla
Why did the judge deduct a point from USA at 6:40?
+Jason Downs She didn't get the yuko, it too much time passed since the first attempt
That USA coach is the bomb
Each time Kayla takes her back, I keep hoping she’ll sink the RNC.
Love Jimmy Pedro!!!
What a career
Kayla is double tough!!!
Can someone explain to me the rules? How come sometimes the ref let’s them keep on going even after the throw and sometime he doesn’t.
he should've given them time, it's only supposed to stop on the ground after 1) someone is pinned for a winning score in which case the match ends, or 2) there's no progression for like 5-10-ish seconds. Basically he isn't being a good ref because if he were, he'd allow the players to show that progress in the match could be made on the ground
The British girl made the mistake of always putting herself in a vulnerable position for the
American's harai-goshi. And the American was the more positive fighter.
Legend beast osss!!!❤😊❤😊
She so far ahead....she made easy work of silver medalist........and that 2 sec on the mat....where she realised what she has done...
Great athlete
I know her from Impractical Jokers.
Do you ever smell her panty ???😂😂😂
Is jujitsu in the Olympics??
No
Gemma
I love Kayla!
beauty and the beast
Hey! Gemma is beautiful! Be nice.
What are these two sisters fighting over? Why doesn't their mom step in and break it up? Two sisters shouldn't be fighting like that.
cuz theyre 78kg a piece lol. You get in the middle of that, Im not.
Harrison seemed almost recklessly aggressive, trying techniques that she was not in position to complete. Gibbons easily defending most of her attacks. Still, good enough for gold!
Kayla had admitted in interviews that USA judo cannot compete technique wise with most Asian and European counties. So USA judo has to make up for it with strength and aggressiveness.
HEY! KAYLA!
💪
cool
Why is the announcer so biased
Kayla dominated the match, but she exposed her neck to okuri eri jime a couple times. Had Gemma gotten the lapel like Burton did to Elmont in Rio, 2007...
what's song name??
로우지론다 call my name&pass out
I think they were tired before they started.
I love You Kayla 😍😍😍😘😘😘
What those who don’t understand Judo will say, is it’s boring and slow! Sloppy, and no technique. No, it’s quite the opposite, this is two high level Judo players maneuvering for position and constantly countering.
Mayra Aguiar rules
I came here after watching Impractical Jokers' episode with her.
USA
Georgian Judo should have certain speed limits. Almost done is slow motion with rules restricting movement options based on the contact the opponents have.
??
I love how the commentators spend 80% of the time talking about the British athlete after the American won.
These two ladies and Ronda Rousey look like they could be triplets. Is there some pattern here, or is my sample size just too small?
She's my cousin's sister's niece
good
6:08 hansoku make...
nope. 2012 rules stated that leg grabs are allowed as a secondary attack.
thought she was from middletown
What's the thread count on a judo Gi like 3,000. Them thangs look thick.
They are so thick and in summer when working out it’s so hotttt
Imagine Brock Lesnar as a woman!
Third Herd lol
Ok.
I don’t think he’d be great at judo to be honest.
Not even close.
could these girls beat ronda? in judo at least?
Harrison is one weight class above Ronda however Ronda is a bit older. I've read that they would often train together, the sessions where highly competitive, went back and fourth, so it was always close.
+altertheskyy1 Easily
I believe so since Rousey wasn't able to get gold in the Olympics
honey you can’t judge based off of medal. Considering there were different people in both olympics you need to be aware and not do that based off of medal.
Harrison was her judo trainer while she was in the ufc I think
Gemma Gibbons has won a London 2012 silver medal 🥈 for England 🏴, not the gold medal 🥇!!!
Wow. Harrison with a judo gold. Getting caught up on the Olympics with the virus going on. Just watching the grabbing and tugging and jamming the holds and slapping them away. THAT must be seriously painful. The actual throws probably don't hurt, like that, but I'm not a judo knowledgeable person. Plus the training and stamina. One thing about Gibbons. Her hips are positioned too far away to take on her American opponent. If a judoka has to grapple, standing up, why would she want to 'bridge' space to spam an attempt?
Parecen hermanas!!!
UFC champion coming soon
