- Early this past spring I installed the Tusk brand front oversized Typhoon rotor and Tusk pads and the rear Typhoon rotor with Tusk pads and steel braided brake line. After running them this season and completing our 6-day ADV ride this August, It is time for a proper review.

Just went online after watching this and bought the set, Thankyou so much!!! Also some mirrors from Rocky Mountain
I just installed it this summer for me in Utah. I have the tusk over sized rotor in the front with core Moto steel brake lines and the change was amazing aseptically under load. I have the brake line for the rear but I haven’t installed it. Now I just need to get rid of the nose dive with some cogent suspension
I went with the braided front brake line, front rotor and caliper bracket for the gen 1 when it was on sale. The front of caliper needed a rebuild so i just tossed it in the cart. Well worth the money. Tusk just doesn't seem to disappoint. I didn't touch the rear since it was just fine. Its good to see someone else enjoying upgraded braking performance.

Thanks for sharing, Mason ! An upgr worth consideration. I have braided lines. Stock pads tho I think fr the orig owner. I trail brake most of the time including gravel when I’m feeling frisky ! 😬 You got me nervous about that bearing tho. Yikes. Again, thx Mason. 👍🏽

The 2018 received the larger disc up front with colour coordinated Helperformance SS brake lines before I did the full Cogent suspension. The new brake setup worked very well, but wow did the bike dive like Jacques Cousteau! Once the Cogent front suspension was done, like you said, you can feel the braking and get way more control especially in loose ground.
Haven't done anything to the rear figuring, what is the point as I seldom use them. Like you said, the OEM rear brakes are an off/on switch. For me the rear brake is only used in slow speed maneuvers. You just might get me thinking...

P.S. Have you looked at installing the MCP carb kit? I installed it 2 years ago after not being happy with the flat spots in the throttle with the OEM and KLX kits? It installed in a hour or so and gives the carburetor models almost fuel injections throttle response. After my Cogent install, this was my next best modification.

Thanks for the content Mason you are the best!!!! I did the EBC 320mm front and the EBC stock in the rear both with the upgraded pads with Stainless Steel lines front and rear and I also thought it was money well spent one my 2015 klr650. I also love my cogent dynamics suspension too. Keep up the great work!!!!
Thanks for the information. I've been holding off doing a brake upgrade, but $210 makes it a very affordable upgrade. You are correct about the stock rear brake locking up, it has put me in a bad spot more than once.

I purchased the steel braided brake lines from Eagle Mike a year ago, and did the typhoon front rotor a few months ago. Fantastic performance upgrade for my 2009 KLR, wanted to get the rear rotor as well but it was out of stock. I will be doing the rear rotor this fall. I have noticed a big difference in the feel of the lever; caught myself breaking a little too hard in the first couple hundred miles…especially while standing…Thanks for the content Mason, keep it up
Why do steel break lines make such a difference in performance?
Rubber hoses flex with pressure. This leads to a non linear break performance and squishiness.
My understanding is that steel braided don't flex, and so that pressure from the brake lever is more consistently transfered to the break piston and pad, leaving a much more consistent break feel.
Less squishiness, more consistent application of brake lever pressure
Been watching you now for a few years here in Perth Western Australia. Another great addition/mod to the trusty KLR.
With all the mods you’ve done, why have you still got the factory exhaust? This is usually the first thing to go on the bike on most channels.

Been following your channel for a few years now. Good stuff! I am interested to see how they hold up in the rough stuff. Especially in ruts. Seems like you would lose some ground clearance with the larger diameter rotor.
No issues at all this past year. They even survived the brutal rocky trail we hit on the trip ;) Cheers.
