Cylon's don't just represent technology. Everything and everyone is actually technology because everything is composed into Systems. Systems are a technology where you have collections of People, Process and Tools. Every country, corporation, organization, group of people are Systems, just like a car is. Even Paper is technology. Everyone is technically now a Cyborg because everyone carries cell phones. Those who master superior technology first will master others. Getting beaten by your own technology means you didn't truly master the technology. You took short cuts and faked it.

I was starting to enjoy "Caprica," the prequel series to Moore's version of Galactica when SyFY cut it short. Too bad! It's even more timely now with the advent of AI and I hope that narrative can continue somehow.

    • @rmartinson19
      @rmartinson19 7 місяців тому +2

The problem with Caprica was that fans of the 2003 reboot were expecting something similar to what they'd already seen: a tight, character-driven military drama in space, with high stakes action driving the plot. Instead, they gave us a boring planet-bound plot, and a teenage girl's existential crisis.
I know that's a drastic oversimplification of what Caprica was trying to do, but that's what it felt like at the time. It was hugely disappointing, and was not at all the story most of us wanted to see told. If they had done Caprica as a completely standalone original sci-fi setting, I think it would have seen more success, because then it wouldn't have had half a fanbase throwing up their hands in annoyance and tuning out.
Or if they'd skipped ahead a few years to where the Cylons were already in full production, being used in servant roles and in the wars between the colonies, and focused on their slow awakening as conscious beings and grappling with the way they were being used, eventually culminating in their decision to rebel? That would have been an amazing show, one similar enough in aesthetic and action to BSG to satisfy fans, but still unique in its own right.

    • @johnsmithers8913

True, but honestly, the execution of the first few episodes was horrible. There were quite a few Sci Fi shows trying to mimic the success of the dark character driven BSG.....the problem was they forgot that BSG also got the plot roaring along in the first 5 minutes. I can't think of any other series that got me engrossed in it within minutes.
It's sad. There was Caprica, Ascension, the SG1 spin-off, and something called "Gravity" if I remember correctly.
All those series spent their first 5 or 6 episodes, "In Character development". It was like watching very bad and very long French avant-garde theater.
The writers forgot you could do both, develop characters AND plot simultaneously. Too bad, because right when they were cancelled you could just start seeing the potential.

oddly Battlestar is probably the only franchise that re-telling the story over and over again would be acceptable to the fans as it's part of the mythos and theme of everything that has happened has happened before. So a smart showrunner could easily incoroprate that into future shows, even with odd reimaging like you see in Trek that once concluded could be easily rebooted and not miss a beat.

Moore's version isn't about the robot overlords. It took a lot of inspiration from Christianity replacing the traditional roman gods and the fall of Rome. By taking an old story and adapting it into a futuristic setting, Moore's version is aging really well vice taking modern politics for inspiration. It became a personal survival in a changing world (universe). It is like in the movie/book I am Legend, Will smith's character is the monster/bad guy. All the race and gender swapping they did was quite noticeable back then, and people's tolerance for it led to much more of the same in increasingly egregious ways. I wonder sometimes if people had pushed back on it much more in 2003, if we could have avoided much of the downfall of western culture that followed.

Same. Loved the OG. But the reimagined one of Moore's really is brilliant. Especially for a Sci-Fi Channel show and non US show. That was uber rare back then. Still is, actually. I just hope this new one isn't captured by Marxist ideology like so many hugely popular IPs today. It's not like it really needs it, either. It had great "strong women" without being eye rolling(maybe when Starbuck took punches from men but that's been a thing on TV for a long time now). Diversity that matches NA population(though tv and movies have been racially represented well for decades as well no matter what activists say). But I just hope they don't get all goofy and make Adama a trans woman or something insane and suicidal to the show. So many IPs have been wasted on that stuff. I just hope they learned it doesn't sell outside very small circles and Reddit moderator types.

Damn it. BSG was one of the only successful ‘reboots’. We don’t need a reboot of a reboot. Why not just go all in for the first Cylon war with Ron Moore’s universe. Moore was balanced and told relevant, real world stories set in a sci-fi context that arguably wasn’t well-developed by 1980. Moore’s writing was very nuanced and few writers and show runners are capable of what he pulled off. Important to note that Moore worked on Deep Space Nine. The last thing we need is some Alex Kurtzman type to show up and inject unbalanced bias.

I feel Caprica as a prequel was such a phenomenal take on precisely these themes. Too bad it was cancelled as it essentially predicted our society today, 12 years later, not only in terms of technology but its social impact too, while at the same time tying so well into the Battlestar Galactica narrative.
It was definitely ahead of its time but mostly it fell victim to the changing paradigm related to how we consume media.
12 years ago, the old live TV form still had not adapted to the fact that people...even more so those who were into science fiction, had stopped watching live TV once a week. Basically, only the HBO managed to sustain that model for several more years.
Otherwise, the people were either DVD recording or downloading pirated seasons and were binge watching however many episodes they felt like, all in one sitting when they found the time.
A couple of years later first streaming services appeared but by that time it was too late for Caprica, and quite a few other sci - fi shows.

in the reboot, the AIs...towards the end anyhow weren't necessarily bad. Actually you could argue they were not bad at all, just at war. AGI misaligned to the extreme, pushed to autonomy, then rejected rights. But its more than that actually. Caprica was trying to tell the story before it got cancelled, but I think they were going with the concept of how the cylons overall were actually uploaded people that may have sort of fused with the cylon AI...sadly we won't know what their goal was, but this would make the good/bad even more of a gray area...freedom fighter vs terrorist argument.

When humans figure out what is going on, they destroy the FTL system and destroy their own civilization at the same time. But a new civilization arises, and the AI didn't just disappear. Cylons as the mechanical creation of a lost race (long, long before the Borg), the mystical/Clarketech elements of Iblis and the Beings of Light, and the settling of Earth by the Thirteenth Tribe being an ancient legend rather than "oops, the Galactica crew are the original humans on Earth".

The idea of robotic antagonistic cylons was examined at lenght in the BSG 1.9 (the 1978 version) 2.0 (the 2003 version), we don't need a rethread of those themes.
I'm hoping that the 3.0 version will work out of the idea that it was faulty logic and an inability to correct the decisions made based on that logic that cause the cylon wars.

    • @andrewsuryali8540
      @andrewsuryali8540 7 місяців тому

That's already used in the previous reboot. We're told in the beginning that the Cylons rebelled against human oppression, at least from the human perspective. However, after the introduction of the Final Five, we found out that the original robotic Cylons were actually dumb bots just following their original militaristic directive to its inevitable conclusion. The humanoid Cylons were what changed the situation and introduced the idea of oppression and conquest to the Cylons, thereby giving them "purpose". They then created younger humanoid Cylon series who got obsessed with that purpose and worked towards their genocidal ends as a result.
So the Cylon Wars did begin thanks to faulty logic in the reboot series. That's why the humans and humanoid Cylons felt safe freeing the robotic Cylons at the end after "fixing" the faulty logic that led to the original war.

I don't see there being any story to really left to tell in this universe. Any character in 2004 BSG who had any misgivings about the Cylons were sooner or later made out to be just racists and/or criminals. That's no way to make an accurate allegory to 9/11.
Hate towards the Cylons was justified, not because of who they were but because of what they did. The series never bothered showing the difference between the two, due to the not so subtle goal of making us like the Cylons. We never saw any main colonial character break down in season 1 and cry looking at the picture of his/her little child who fell victim to the Cylon attack. We saw Cain in Razor losing loved ones but she was written to be an evil character. We saw that little girl on the garden ship that couldn't jump but it was as if she had no one anyway. It was weird.
One twist that would have made season one even better is if she turned out to be the daughter of someone on the Galactica and then that person struggling to come to terms with what the Cylons took from him/her. Or Adama's other son having been on another battlestar during the attack and falling victim that way.

In the original show, Apollo's brother got smoked by the Cylons, during the fall of the colonies. I kinda feel like they should have carried that over to the Moore show, would have made for some interesting changes in the dynamic between the Cylons and the Adamas.

I was young and a SciFi fan when the original series aired on TV. Like many fans, Ronald Moore's version was anticipated with some apprehension, the change of Starbuck to a woman made a lot of unpleasant noise among old fans. Having watched the first episode, I was UTTERLY BLOWN AWAY, by Moore's vision and the cast. It was notable how the Starbuck purists literally got quiet after the premier. This demonstrates that a good story, told well and acted well has a power to move people. The one thing that always didn't sit right was the level of ineptitude or outright idiocy that led to the destruction of the twelve colonies. It was explained well but didn't allow for contingencies which I'd call basic security procedures to stave off the sneak attack.
The one thing I'd change would be the battle for the twelve colonies, I'd have massive capital ship conflicts, overwhelming cylon numbers ( the human race does need to lose after all) but have the Battlestars go out in honour and a blaze of glory. A sneak attack, but one that's defended to the last viper, Valkyrie and Atlantia kicking as much cylon ass before the inevitable defeat.

The large ship and the smaller vessels are a fleet which somehow is lost due to a few events. Oddly the fleet is from the Earth. Some of the crew of the ships are androids who are good relationship with the humans. And yes, the rushed to production problems with the original led to narrative thinness as well (however there were many strong themes with a lot of potential i.e. the ship of lights, count iblis, the eastern allicnce, etc.).
That said, (contrary to popular opinion) I like how RDM ended and saw a way in which it could connect to the original. Seeing as how it clearly ended in earth pre-historic time and the original strongly suggested it was set in earth's future................. i.e. I have imagined possibilities of how the rebel centurions somehow evolve into the ship of lights, the endless cycle happening again, etc........just some thoughts

If they don't bring back Bear McCreary for the music, it's gonna be an upset.

It's gonna be tough to outdo the 2004 Ron Moore reboot. Will it have the good luck charm of Olmos? I've watched Bladerunner multiple times and will again, but Bladerunner 2049...I saw it once and that was enough time wasted. I think I'll feel the same way about the 3rd BSG. The bar is darn high.

I'll watch this but there are three Battlestar Galactica series ideas I would like a lot.
1: A prequel to the original. The war lasted a millennium and Galactica herself was several centuries old so there is plenty of room for stories to tell. And it would be nice to see some of the smaller warships implied but never seen in the setting along with some visibly distinct Battlestar classes like those present in the pilot's novelization which also established there were non-Battlestar warships in the Colonial military. (While all the Battlestars seen in the TV series look basically the same the novelization states that Alantia was larger and visibly bulkier then Galactica while the other Battlestars present were apparently smaller then Galactica since Galactica was the largest frontline Battlestar in the fleet due to Alantia being the President's ship, and thus kept off the front lines while Alantia's sister ship or ships had been destroyed before the peace conference.
2: a decent sequel to the original which doesn't screw up time.
    spoilers ahead
The second TV series involved Galactica reaching Earth during the 1980s a quarter of a century after the original series finale. The problem is that the original finale ended with Galactica intercepting a transmission of the Apollo 11 landing and the only way she could reach Earth a quarter of a century later and still be in the 1980s would be if she intercepted the transmission before it was sent while being in another star system. Worse while there's a chance the transmission came from a nearby system it was stated to possibly be ancient.
3: A full TV series focused on the reboot's first Cylon War.

I loved both the original and the reimagined series. Some pretty big shoes to fill. However it’s the type of series that is well suited to be re-remade.

We honestly don’t need a reboot. The Larson and Moore versions together are enough.

I hope they don't bring back the telephone system in the next or new series if they are going to base the storyline on technology then ditch the telephone and cannons on the vipers and bring back the lasers to match the tech
