  • Like so many of you, I saw the Taylor Swift granny stitch dress and immediately knew I had to make it. I also wanted to explain why the $120 price tag is unethical and show how much actual labor goes into crochet.

    Glad you able make the dress and shine a light on why crochet is expensive.

    Nice job showing how much the cost in the U.S. would cost. Obviously the people who crocheted this dress get pennies compared to our pay here, which is precisely why they outsource the labor. We also are usually trading quality for cheap fast fashion. I have a few pieces of clothing that belonged to my Mom when clothing was made well and was quality even for a middle class person. I am in my 60s and was interested in the result of your project. Love the little matching bag that you did.

      Thank you so much! It's just so crazy to me how fast fashion has infiltrated our world and quality craftsmanship and hanging on to items for generations has all but disappeared.

      My mom is in her 60s. When she was in her 20s, she wore two dresses a LOT and they got handed down to me. One is a bit faded, but the fabric and stitching is as sturdy as it was when it was made. I wear them all the time! Most of the clothes I have from the last decade are tattered.

    Thank you neighbor( Tumwater, Wa). Love the dress, thanks for the break down! I make blankets, sweaters, shawls etc and you just helped me learn how much to charge someone for those items. God Bless. 😇🙏

      My pleasure! It's always so hard for us creative types to value our items correctly especially when we have to compete with fast fashion and even large companies.

    I strongly agree with you Crafty Girrl. Crochet to me is an artwork not just to make and sell for such a cheap price. Thanks for enlightening those who think crochet artist should sell them items cheap because they compare with machine made stuff

    Another thing to consider when pricing your knit or crochet items is your skill level. The classes or time you've devoted to perfecting your craft.

    The dress Taylor wore has neck shaping (a rounded neckline). Front is not just a rectangle (though many of the recreations are).

    If the dress is still stiff after steaming it, you can try treating it with vinegar. I do that before I wash and block things I make with acrylic, especially the cheaper stuff. It helps the drape and texture SO much

    • @thecraftygrrl
      @thecraftygrrl  28 днів тому +1

      I’ve never tried vinegar but heard it works wonders. I did soak it in fabric softener and air dry and it’s so much softer.

    The national minimum wage in the US is $7.25. Employers are not allowed to pay employees lower than Federal minimum wage even if the State has no minimum wage. Employees who get tips get minimum Federal wage per hour if their tips plus wage is less than Federal minimum or the State minimum whichever is higher. State with the highest minimum is Washington State with $16.25. Several States have no minimum and some Cities have higher minimum wages than their State. Washington D.C. minimum is $17.50 an hour which is the highest. You can find the minimum wage for each State from the Department of Labor. I just wanted everyone to know this just in case they are getting lower than what the Federal minimum or their State minimum. Yes I realize there are exceptions but this is the basic rule.

    It was actually helpful to see both directions for the sleeves. I plan on making one of these, and was thinking if doing the sleeves the way you first had them so I could more easily do decreases to have more tapered sleeves.

    New sub here, from Battle Ground, WA. Anyway, I've made two granny square bedspreads, one queen, one king. They took me months each. When i posted on FB everyone was hitting me up for one. No way! They wouldnt pay $1,500 for one, and honestly, that's about what it would cost them

      I wish I had access to cotton when I made it but it still was a great project to make. Now I just have to wait until the cooler months to wear it since the acrylic is so heavy and warm. hahah

    You can’t get any skein of yarn for $2.50 anywhere anymore unless you get the $1.25 skeins at the $ tree but they only have maybe 100 yards each and are very thin. Actually I have never gotten even Red heart super saver at $2.50 a skein even on clearance. Also the US Federal minimum wage is $7.25 it has not changed since it was raised to $7.25 back in 2009 there are states and companies that “CHOOSE” to pay more some much more it is not required by the federal government to pay more than $7.25 per hour to anyone.

    • @ChSasifras
      @ChSasifras Місяць тому +2

      I came down here to talk about the national minimum wage. It can't be national and some states have it lower than that without serious loopholes (ex. People with disabilities.) The US Department of Labor still lists it as $7.25. On the price of yarn, the reality is 2-4 washes and that dress will look like she inherited it so it is actually more expensive in the long run because it can't withstand the wash, much like Shein.
      And I will give her points on the fact I wouldn't work so cheap either. A skill that cannot be made by machine and can be custom made with a few tweaks? Yeah, no, I'm at least $20/hr. That's why most crocheters gift instead of sell.
