Any word on upscaling and smoothing from low bitrate or low res sources? TCL is supposed to follow up on this. My family uses internet and various apps to watch all of our content including sports, how QM8 handles low bitrate and low res is very important to us and probably to most people who aren't consistently running high bit rate and high res content like from cable tv service.
Yo josh I know how this QM8 must be because my TCLR635 from a few years ago is still one of my favorite TVS. I believe it is their first Miniled TVS. It's had several updates over the years that have made the TV even better. I have 3 other TCL tvs and I like them as well. All of them are the famous 6 series models. I am happy with the 4 of them. 😊
For Dolby Vision there will not be an update that allows you to change brightness. That’s the whole point of Dolby Vision. Brightness is scored scene by scene in Dolby vision. (It’s already set if you will.) In the metadata.
Which is BS since you can change it on any other TV that has Dolby Vision. DV IQ is one thing, but this TV seems to make it so you can't really do anything at all. It just decides for you, including gaming with not Local dimming choice. It's good in some regards this TV. In others it's utter shite.

Great review. But I do have one concern. Is this tv a good choice to use as a monitor for my older HP desktop? I would be connecting the computer to the HDMI eARC port. If you could respond to my question, I would greatly appreciate it.

Can you please test the Motion Clarity of this QM8 at 120 with the feature that introduces back light manipulation to improve the motion for Gaming. Just simply open the UFO test and change the speed to 480 pixels per second, the Alien Eyes should look perfectly sharp based on TCL advertising 480 like motion clarity. This would make the QM8 at 60fps a true Plasma successor and at 120fps it would be half as good as a CRT with 1ms of persistence. 480Hz means 2ms of persistence, and this QM8 could potentially have 2 pixels of motion blur when moving at 1000 pixels per second.
So the tcl 6 series I have apparently has a feature called natural motion 480. Basically, I used 120 hz and combined the backlight control option to increase motion clarity. In the UFO test, the eyes looked perfectly clear to me at 480 pixels. Im also not sure this feature is the same as bfi because I didn't see any flicker unlike on the c2 I had.
The reasons why I wouldn't get the TV although it is nice with black level and blooming etc. Is because you cannot change settings in DV and you cannot choose local dimming in gaming. They just decide for you. No thanks. I Decide what I want in brightness and LD and DV settings etc. Really dumb choice by TCL. Maybe if they change that next year I could consider it. It's a shame because it has good qualities about it. But also these annoyances and issues.
