    Maintenance of pond plants would be an ideal topic, we’ve inherited a pond in a new home and the water is black due to poor/no maintenance. Currently planning a rebuild to give the koi a better place to live and don’t want it to end up in the same state again.

    • @ThePondAdvisor
      @ThePondAdvisor  5 років тому +3

      Lloyd Naylor made a note of the topic pond plant maintenance, it’s been covered lightly in a few of my videos. Black water is also a topic I have covered, how to clear black water if I remember, make sure you have an intake bay or surface skimmer feeding a nice big waterfall or wetland filter!

    Great video. It is worth saying that the red flowers on the Lobelia draw hummingbirds to our pond area. Also I found it strange that you said floating plants and not “rafting plants”. I thought that was a signature U.K. Thing? Do you guys use bog lily there or spider lily?

    • @ThePondAdvisor
      @ThePondAdvisor  5 років тому +4

      lol, yes lobelia draw in hummingbirds but not across the big pond here in the UK, as we don’t have any, no we don’t really grow spider/bog lily’s it’s a plant that is over looked buy the growers.

    Hello mark.You are amazing in your work.I always see and learn from your videos. Mark I am from India, At my place the temperature is around 6 degrees in winters and around 45 degrees Here we have very very little rainfall. Mark i m startng a fish store and garden pond making bussiness in coming months.I m learning from long time from your videos. My question is like in aquariums we need 30 percent water change in a week. Do we also have to change water in a planted garden fish pond or not.
    And if we have to change it is in how many days.Just now in my pond i only level up the evaporated water in a week.
    Thanks a lot

    • @ThePondAdvisor

      mfaisal bobby no need to change any water on an outside garden fish pond, you will have to keep the pond topped up however. When you say 6 degrees is that Fahrenheit or Celsius

    Hi Mark! I would love to see you do a detailed video, giving specific step by step instructions on how you adapt an aqua block to hold a submersible pump. I've watched the high speed videos and tried to pause and slow down, etc. I know you must use a specific tool and follow a few "rules of thumb" when you do this. I'm almost done digging the giant hole for my intake bay, so I'd love to see a video like this. Thanks!

    • @ThePondAdvisor
      @ThePondAdvisor  5 років тому +2

      I cut the blocs with a multi tool myself but you can use a saw or disc cutter. Snips what ever you have. A multi cutter is the simplest if you have one. I cable tie the top or a door on one side so you just have to clear the gravel and then open the door/top. If you don’t fix it might move unless it’s a tight fit!

    Cheers, Mark. Have enjoyed loads of your videos, but am wondering is there an advantage to leaving waterplants in their pots as apposed to rooting them under stones/rocks?

    • @ThePondAdvisor
      @ThePondAdvisor  5 років тому +2

      Yes and no, if it’s a dedicated water garden (all about the plants) then yes 100% leave them in containers, if it’s about planting up a ecosystem pond (something for everything) then in the rocks and gravel.
      In a water garden or water lily pool you can feed the plants a lot more so growing in containers is a must. Plus normally the water is dyed black so the eye is not distracted by the containers and under water stuff.

    great video, I have a small collection of carnivorous plants growing in a peat bog, I have bought some plants that I would like to grow along side my CP , Geranium Palustis, Iris Versicolour- blue flag. Primula Rosea. Lobelia Siphilitica ' Alba ' would they tolerate the peat or grow them separate ? they were in a clearance sale so they only cost me £2.00 each.DaveC-london

    Hello mark, I'm looking for help on what plants to use to help rid my wildlife pond of blanket weed and other algae to help get clear water again. Any information would be a great help. It's a 7ft square pond and 3ft deep. Thanks in advance

    • @ThePondAdvisor
      @ThePondAdvisor  5 років тому +2

      3’ deep that sounds more like a fish pond? Why did you go so deep? I would clean out any rubbish in the bottom of the pond and then build up planting shelves. Fast growing plants is what you want to start with. Cheapest one water cress buy a bag from the supermarket and float on the surface.

    Sarracenia roots should only be in water and not the rhizome, and even then they don’t like lots of nutrients in water that can be commonly found in ponds.

      remove the snow so light cant get to the plants, the plants will oxygenate the water then, you can cut a hole in the ice for air breathing animals but the plants will be good if they are hardy

    Hi, I don't think you want to be introducing or encouraging Horsetail into your garden, our friend cannot get rid of it in his. It is a complete nightmare. This is what I found on the internet -
    Horsetail is an invasive weed that can cause a lot of damage and disruption in British gardens.
    Although it’s not an unattractive plant, horsetail has fast-growing underground stems which let it spread quickly and take deep hold, making it difficult to keep under control - Just a thought?

    • @ThePondAdvisor
      @ThePondAdvisor  Рік тому +1

      Lot of different Horse tail plants. Some are crazy this one is “Rough Horsetail” I find it easy to control in our ecosystem ponds. If you have a natural pond (clay lined then it might be a problem).
