Thanks so much Ezra! I had such a hard time connecting 2 430EX III RTs, thinking that each one should have unique IDs (thought that the channel alone, not channel + ID, enabled the connection). I can swear, I watched many videos on this and this was the first time I heard that the IDs must match as well. Again, THANKS!

Hi Nicholas, after using both flashes, yes the 430EX III is not as powerful as the 600EX, but the 430 is still very much capable to shoot weddings, events etc. You just won't be able to adjust the zoom flash function with the 430 for greater distances or wider output.
Jonas Arbius Hey Jonas I am reading up on the 200 D from Canon and I'm reading that you need to either attach a Speedlight flash or a wireless trigger on the hot shoe in order to operate wireless flash connectivity. Even professional DSLRs like the 5D series require similar setup to use multiple flashes. The new radio transmission or new RT flashes can allow you to connect other flashes. The wireless trigger provides more options and flexibility for your flash setup

The Speedlite Transmitter ST-E3-RT will only trigger other 430EXIII's or 600EX-RT's set to RADIO SLAVE mode. All of the Speedlites in your setup have to be set to RADIO or OPTICAL mode. The Speedlite Transmitter ST-E3-RT is a RADIO MASTER only. When set to OPTICAL mode, the Slave SPEEDLITES are fired by a Camera's built-in flash or a Speedlite in the hot shoe.
Ezra, since the 430EX III-RT has radio transmission capabilities, is there any reason to pick up an ST-E3-RT at the same price? I'd think just buying another flash would be a better option than being what appears to just be a flash trigger.
dalejrfanfreak The ST-E3-RT will allow you to fire multiple flashes, up to 15 simultaneously. If you don't have a need for all that, then purchasing another flash with radio transmission is probably a better option

I know the difference between a radio transmission and an optical transmission, radio is a wireless frequency in a 360-degree Range where is Optical transmission is the line-of-sight technology. I actually never used individual slave mode so I'm not sure about that one. If you have a crop sensor camera that has a pop-up flash, you should be able to control the flash output from the camera in Optical mode & Radio mode. I remember when I had a Rebel T5 and a 7D Mark II, both cameras with a pop-up Flash, the pop-up flash was required in order to wirelessly shoot with Speedlight flashes in optical mode. Full frame cameras like 6D or the 5D Mark 3 required a 600EX - RT or the Speedlite transmitter because those cameras do not have a pop-up Flash with transmission functionality built into the camera. Helps very much. Very prompt too. I intend to get this flash as a first flash for the 70D, to use off camera. Have used OCF on my film camera. Basic optical slave and manual flash with no flash adjustment. That is why I am trying to understand all these bells and whistles.I will invest in this rather than one of the cheaper 3rd party flashes, because of ease-of-use, compatibility and reliability. Using a same-brand flash will allow me to try as many features and learn more, I think. Hope I have made the right choice. Thanks Ezra, once again.
+Richard Phillips Good decision Richard, I would definitely go with the brand name because I used a 3rd party flash from Yougnuo it lacks ETTL technology to help automate the proper range and output of flash. I suggest learning as much as possible and make the jump. The 430EX III or the 600EX-RT is worth it
Hi! I just bought 3 of these flashes. How can I stop the Slave to not fire? Some times I want fire just one of them from the master, is it possible? I can not find this function.
If you have a Speedlite Transmitter ST-E3-RT, under the GR Menu, you can turn any of the Slave Speedlites On or Off. If you have a newer EOS digital camera, look for EXTERNAL FLASH on the camera's menu for off-camera Speedlite functions you can control from the camera, including turning any or all of them on or off..
@Rex Ho A 430EXIII may be used instead of a ST-E3-RT in the camera's hot shoe. It offers all of the options of the ST-E3_RT (control of all of the other Speedlites, 430EXIII and 600EXRT, 600EXII-RT), plus providing an extra flash head, if needed. The flash heads of all Canon radio Speedlites can be turned on or off without affecting the operation of their internal radio transceiver.
I purchased a Yongnuo YN-E3-RT and could never get it to link to the 430 EXIII. I had the master/slave settings correct, channels set, ids correct, but no connect.
I bought the YN-E3-RT to use with my new 430EX III RT and I could never get it to work. It would show it was synced -- but I could not get the flashes to fire. I sent it back.
So if I have two 430's and I can use one as a master. If I setup like that will the flash connected to the camera go off when the shutter goes off or can I use that flash on camera and not have it fire the flash basically making that flash on camera function just like an st-e3-rt? I'm trying to decide what peice to get next cause right now I only have one 430ex-Rt. Get another 430 or get the st-e3-rt. I'm coming from Nikon where I had optical master with the on camera flash (which I cover slightly to keep the flash off of my subject) to fire an sb-600 off camera flash.
That is correct George, if you have two 430EX Mark III, you can use one as the master and the other as a slave. You do not necessarily need the ST-E3-RT. I suggest going to your local camera store to decide on a 2nd 430EX III or ST-E3-RT. I would probably go with a 2nd 430EX III

George Horning Jr. Its the latter George, when one 430EX III is mounted on top of camera as a master, the master will fire and a 2nd or 3rd slave, (same 430EX III) with fire at the exact same time, no lag

Sorry for this but....So If did purchase the 430ex III-rt I could have it as my master and still use the 430ex II as a slave and it should fire via IR? Basically both flashes will be right next to other on a stand. Thanks for responding!

In terms of flash power, I know that it isn't close to 600 ex's power but is it plenty powerful for portraits/weddings in your experience?

Could this be used as just a standalone speedlite or would it be pointless to not utilize the RT?
Sure Cameron, the 430EX III can be used as a standalone flash, I do it most of the time at events

my transmitter and slave flash won't go green and link. I have them both on CH1 and put them on an id of 1111
