- There's something special about the SOMA Laboratory Cosmos.
How did I end up here? I wanted to focus on playing, on sharing what I was thinking or feeling in that moment, versus it being orchestrated, planned, quantized... The Sound on Sound mode of the Strymon Volante scratched that itch but I kept reading about the Cosmos. So I looked into it, watched videos, bookmarked the Soma site, and waited, and thought, ruminated, mused, and eventually found one on Reverb used.
I'm a classical guitarist by training. But instead of my pedalboard / guitar workflow it has been sitting on my piano since it was unboxed. I've it running through my interface, in and out of the daw, and I've been experimenting with it for about a week now.
My brother played piano growing up so there was always one nearby from a young age. There was something freeing about not having studied it, not feeling limited by framework and rules. Improvisation is a struggle for me on the guitar but on the piano I can just sit and play.
The Cosmos for me brings a different depth to sitting and playing. It adds a reverb like wash over everything - a sustain pedal with it's own personality and quirks. It does what it feels like doing regardless of what you want to play - it's going to go on it's own tangent. Playing with it, to borrow a saying from Bob Ross, is filled with happy little accidents. I'm looking forward to many more.
Workflow: Cubase w/ Native Instruments Straylight on the Cloud Piano patch. Stereo out via the Clarett+ 8Pre to the SOMA Cosmos. Output from Soma back into Cubase. Basic mastering chain using Ozone 10. Video recorded via an old C920 into OBS Studio, and stitched in Adobe Premier Pro.
