Expressive E - Noisy 2 Playthrough with Osmose (MPE Patches)
Переглядів 1,2 тис.5 місяців тому
I purchased a copy of Noisy 2 on release and put together a video playthrough of many of the patches on offer. Since this is an MPE enabled vst I approached this video a bit differently. The Osmose reacts to taps, short presses, long presses, and dynamics and that's how I experimented with the patches. Expressive E has a few great videos with Noisy 2 in a mix or with examples of written songs -...

There's something special about the SOMA Laboratory Cosmos. How did I end up here? I wanted to focus on playing, on sharing what I was thinking or feeling in that moment, versus it being orchestrated, planned, quantized... The Sound on Sound mode of the Strymon Volante scratched that itch but I kept reading about the Cosmos. So I looked into it, watched videos, bookmarked the Soma site, and wai...

    how come you don't get any white noise. It's impossible for me get clear osmose preset sound directly into ableton, although it;s slightly better through arturia minifuse interface compared to rodecaster. Tried all the xlr's and audio cables, still the same issue (facepalm)

      Hi there! So my chain here was from Osmos (stereo) into the Microcosm, through the pedal chain, out of the BigSky and directly into the front of the Scarlett 6i6 Gen2 from Focusrite via 1/4 TS cables. From there it was a usb 2.0 cable into an Apple USB-C adapter and into my phone. I just used the standard iPhone video recording to capture both the audio and video. I treated the volume on the Osmos like a pre-amp so I kept it at about 80% or less and then estimated the gain throughout the chain to make sure there was no clipping. I kept the input gain on the Focusrite at about 1/2, so about noon on the knobs. If I set up my laptop and Cubase I would have shot for an output of -6dB max for volume. I'm thinking that white noise, if it's not from too much gain, might be from your pedal power supplies. The one's supplied w/ Strymon are kind of cheap imo so I have all of the pedals powered from a Voodoo Labs Pedal Power 3 Plus which has ample power for the Strymons and no worries about noise being injected by a junk psu. I've found a lot of the smaller one plug adapters to be rather noisy and that will impact everything. I hope you figure it out!

    • @Just-Jonny
      @Just-Jonny 8 місяців тому

      Thanks! If I had to pick just one I would go with the Volante. It has a built in spring reverb but one of the features that I kind of stumbled into is the SOS mode that you access by holding the right most foot button down. This brings you into the Sound on Sound mode, which lets you create very long evolving walls of sound - after googling around a bit I found quite a few references to it being used in the "frippertronics" style of ever evolving loops of sound. It adds an amazing depth and character that's so much more than that of a delay pedal. I've actually pulled my pedalboard apart and changed it up so now the Volante is before the Microcosm, followed by the Timeline and BigSky. Most of the time I've just had the Volante into the Microcosm and then out to amps. Happy experimenting!

    Looking at getting the Clarett, looking at the PDF manual it indicates USB 2+ or Thunderbolt 3+ connectivity, did you just use the USB C cable to your USB C card (no thunderbolt)? A bit confusing from the manual with consideration to the connection types. I'd think they would list USB C as an additional connectivity option as it does vary from Thunderbolt but what do I know? 😊

    • @Just-Jonny
      @Just-Jonny 9 місяців тому

      Hi Stark! Apologies in just now seeing this. I’m using the native usb-c connectivity from the Clarett+ directly to the usb-c card. I would hope that it would work equally with thunderbolt since they’re similar standards but I’ve never tried it. Focusrite’s website only lists the Red series as Thunderbolt. I believe Thunderbolt may be a faster protocol vs usb-c but the later is more universal. Good luck and happy creating!

    Cool video. Thanks. I have heard opinions that clarett plus has unbalanced out chanels. One guy said that right headphone speaker is louder than left. Is it true? What about main outs on your monitors? Does Your unit has same issues or maybe it was bad luck for that guy? Thanks again.

    You could of bought the Scarlett 18i20 3rd gen and then bypassed the pres with your external pres. Saved money doing that way.

    • @Just-Jonny
      @Just-Jonny 2 роки тому

      Thanks for your thoughts and the comment, Unique! I only have one desktop pre (Golden Age Pre-73 MKII) and the other two in the studio area are a Torpedo Reload and a Tone Hammer bass amp. Since making this video I've picked up three mics and I've dedicated XLRs going to those. If I had additional external preamps the 18i20 would be a good option however there are some benefits to the Clarett+ that made me go in that direction. Better internal ad/da converters, headphone amp, overall greater dynamic range, and lower noise floor. The price difference between the 18i20 and 8pre is about $450 at the moment, so knowing that I needed the internal pre's I just went for the Clarett+. That being said the 18i20 is an absolutely amazing box and will do everything most people will need. In a fully processed mix I doubt you could tell the difference between the two. The takeaway is both the 18i20 and Clarett+ are high quality tools that will allow you to create; and creating is what's important.

    • @jaredholton3145

      Is the noise floor that much different between the Scarlett and Clarett+ in your experience?

  • @MinisterTravis
    @MinisterTravis 2 роки тому

    Did you notice a big difference between the conversion?

    • @Just-Jonny
      @Just-Jonny 2 роки тому

      So I had to spend some time thinking on this one for you. Conversion happens in a few places - there’s the a/d through the preamps and the d/a back out to headphones, monitors, etc. I had to muse on this one for a bit because with the Scarlett 6i6 I had things setup in a bit of a convoluted way. Primarily I write music using VSTs and only recently have I started experimenting with actual analogue inputs. For the Scarlett the most I usually would use is the front Mic input for the Blue Spark that I have on my desk and this would be my go to for voice recordings for work. I rarely would record guitar through the 6i6 since there was a tonality of the inputs I didn’t like. I purchase a Golden Age Pre-73 MKII as a DI for this reason and honestly never had great results through the 6i6 with it (for ages it was more an issue with the way I set it up). On the output side I had the audio routed through the SPDIF to a coax on my Auralic Vega DAC so I never used the d/a converters on the output side of the 6i6. I felt they never lived up to the sound quality of the VSTs so I bypassed the output stage completely and set it to my HiFi DAC. If I needed to record instruments using microphones I would do it in my teacher’s studios since he has some amazing analogue preamps and mics. When I moved to the Clarett+ I started using the internal a/d and d/a and I do not bypass the output of the Clarett+ to the Vega like I did with the 6i6. I feel that the Clarett+ is transparent and articulate - it’s exactly what I expected for what it is. One of the other oddities of my setup is that I use an external Rega Brio amplifier, Transparent cables, and Focal Chorus 706 Bookshelf speakers instead of traditional monitors. Since my home studio PC is also my gaming and music PC it’s geared towards the listening experience than the more sterile qualities you would get through monitors. I use my Sennheiser HD650s and SoundID Reference for monitoring critically in Cubase. One of the top things I’ve enjoyed about the interface is just the number of input and outputs I can do my routing with. I picked up a Hologram Microcosm recently and I’ve been outputting VSTs via stereo into the pedal and then recording that through the front inputs of the Clarett+. It’s amazing fun if you’re into following music to see where it leads you. In the video’s recordings I notice the biggest difference in DI tracks. I feel like there’s a better tonality and a higher quality in the capture. I’ve been working on a different project so I’ve done minimal recording so far but what I have done I’ve been happy with. At the time I made the video I did not have additional microphones to test the system with… but I do now. Since then I picked up an active ribbon (sE VR2) and a stereo pair of Soyuz 013 FET small diaphragm condenser microphones. If it would be helpful I’d be happy to work up another video with some analogue recording on acoustic guitar.

    I have a Twin Apollo right now. I'm looking for the Clarett + because I wanted to lower the latency on my Neural Dsp plugins (like plini). Right now at 256, there are still clicks and pops. Are you able to reduce to 256 without clicks/pops?

    • @Just-Jonny
      @Just-Jonny 2 роки тому

      So I’ve noticed clicks and pops with the Neural DSP plugins before. Generally I run a sample rate of 48k with a buffer of 64 and I have no issues with anything with the exception of the Neural plugins. I just tested for you with the Neural plugins at 64 and 256 buffer sizes and it appears to have had less issues at 64 than 256. I don’t have any issues with Guitar Rig 5 & 6, Rhino, or Softubes Marshall Silver Jubilee 2555. Given that the only times i have issues with pops are with the Neural plugins I wonder if there’s an issue related to the plugins specifically. Again running at a buffer of 64 (total latency of 8.5ms) I very rarely run into issues. This is in Cubase 11 pro.

    I'm running the Antelope Discreet 8 and so far the Windows drivers on PC have been buggy and not the best. I won't be buying another Antelope! Obviously Universal Audio Apollos are not making any good Windows drivers. They only seem to work good on Macs. The drivers are making or breaking a lot of these audio interfaces. I'm going to be buying and trying the Focusrite Clarett+ 8Pre for my Adam 5.1 surround setup in the near future. So far I've read great things about Focusrite Windows driver friendliness. If the drivers don't work good in your OS environment, then it defeats the purpose and functionality of the audio interface hardware!

    • @Just-Jonny
      @Just-Jonny 2 роки тому

      I think that's a good assessment of things. I considered going with Antelope, and they were pushed as the only available option when I spoke w/ someone at B&H, but when I was doing research I came across the same kind of issues. I also thought it rather strange that they were bundling the Edge Solo microphone for free considering they're listed for ~$700... I don't think I've ever had any driver issues w/ the Focusrite products whether it was the Scarlett or now the Clarett+. They're very stable thankfully and work equally as well in Cubase as well as on a Microsoft Teams meeting. They actually show a 5.1 setup in the Clarett+ manual (fael-downloads-prod.focusrite.com/customer/prod/s3fs-public/downloads/Clarett%2B%208Pre%20User%20Guide%20V2.pdf) on page 15! Hope you're able to pick one up and it works out for you!
