  • The Caves of Han-sur-Lesse refers to a natural complex of caves in Belgium. A major Belgian tourist attraction, the caves are located in Wallonia, on the outskirts of the village of Han-sur-Lesse. The caves were formed as the result of an underground erosion of a limestone hill by the river Lesse.
With 14,248 meters of galleries discovered to date (“Santa Claus cave” and “Trou des Crevés” included), the underground network of the Han caves is the longest in Belgium 1 .
In the cave, the temperature is rather low throughout the year (around 13 °C ) and there is also a high degree of humidity .
The general public can access the caves after purchasing a ticket at the reception of the SA des Grottes de Han-sur-Lesse and Rochefort. A route of approximately 2 kilometers has been set up and can be done on foot (duration: approximately 1 hour 45 minutes) under the guidance of a guide who provides commentary. An audiovisual show shows the rooms and galleries not accessible to visitors and reserved for speleologists. The site receives half a million visitors annually.
There are 508 ascending or descending steps and the cave has various rooms, such as the "Mysterious", the "Arms room" and the "Dome room". At the end of the visit, visitors left the cave in a boat: the exit from the cave was via the resurgence of the underground Lesse, the end of which is located at the Belvaux chasm . FromApril 2009, the part of the journey on the water which was carried out on board a boat was replaced by a passage by means of footbridges, mainly for budgetary and safety reasons: the boats required costly refurbishment to meet the requirements. current safety standards; the footbridges also allow easier access for people with reduced mobility and visits all year round, whatever the water level.
