25 minutes later and I still am unsure if the Mk18 is still relevant. I did learn that the NFA IS BULLSHIT. All in all, very informative. 10 out of 10.
We wanted to see how reliable our MK18s were in Africa, so we shot about 500-600 rounds of ball through them without any lube. They all shot perfectly fine with no stoppages or malfunctions at all. Honestly love them. We had basic factory MK18s with no modifications .
Home defense for me and truck gun is a G super duty 10.5 and it’s great. If I need to reach out DD socom 14.5. Need nothing else imo as a civilians anything else is just a bonus. I’ve been thinking about getting a 11.5 G barrel since they started making their own now. I think it would still look good with the 9.5 rail.
I never understood this. My 10" barrel easily groups 1" at 100 yards. If you get into any defensive shooting over 100 yards, you will have some explaining to do
@@trublu3483 while I don’t plan on getting into a defensive shootout at over 100 yards. I’d prefer to have that capability and not need it rather than need that capability and not have it.
The flaw in the SHTF theory about the possibility of longer engagements -- if we're talking about civilian scenarios -- it's always going to be a defensive scenario, ie, the goal is to survive the engagement, not necessarily kill your target. And at engagements that are 150+ yards, there is going to be far more opportunity for a defensive retreat and live to fight another day, rather than to try to shoot it out with the bad guy. So in a SHTF scenario, the only time I'm ever going to be firing my gun is if I'm close range, backed into a corner, and have no other options. I can think of very few realistic defensive scenarios where I'm going to be forced to engage a target at medium to long ranges. And I know there's some of you fantasy warrior types that are like "yeah I don't run away I'm going offensive" -- and maybe you will, but your chances of dying are exponentially higher if you do that, even if you're a trained navy SEAL. Those are just the odds.
You're a thinking man. Too many people put faith in their firearm over rational thought. Let them think they can fire on people over 50+ yards in an urban area, the amount of return fire from various angles will shock them. In the country side, there are marksman's everywhere. The best chance is to stay in the house with a reliable CQB option.
Especially for people in urban areas like myself. If I'm bugging out to my place in the countryside, the sightlines will be short, and the engagements even closer most likely.
Thank you for saying this. I see many guys running guns with 2 pound lpvos and bipods as their shtf build, because they say they need to be able to shoot past 250 yds. Even if they are 100 yards away you can most likely run away You want a short handy lightweight rifle because your probably never going to use it
As long as you have a non sbr upper the unregistered one never needs to leave your house or at least be shown to untrustworthy friends (that is if you still associate with liberals anyways). If you ever need to use it, just swap to the “compliant” upper after the fact. You’ll also having a boating or fishing accident very shortly after use.
I've carried a MK18 for years and loved it. The number one problem I had is barrel erosion. We had to do quarterly barrel erosion checks. This was attributed to the shorter gas return causing higher temps. Btw, the comment about the A1 was blasphemy.
Just don’t recognize it or obey/heed/follow it and then it basically is abolished/overturned/repealed... you’re American aren’t you? Act like it. It’s very American to rebel against laws. It’s what America was founded upon.
US firearm laws are super weak anyway, I dont get what all the whining is about. Great, you cant have full auto, but militaries normally dont even use that firing mode. And if its good enough for the military, its for a civilian, or militia, or not-militia militia as defined by the 2nd amandment, or whatever.
I’m glad you brought up kicking in doors and clearing room to room as a great way to die.. most people have no business kicking in doors against an armed and trained enemy. Civilian defense on a large scale will depend on guerrilla warfare and ambush tactics. Kicking doors and bounding towards a trained target will almost certainly guarantee a combat casualty.
Happened across an armed preacher news story somewhere in the country, can't remember where. Preacher, wife and deacon get to a rural country churchhouse early on a Sunday morning. Strange pickup parked outside. Found back door forced open. Preacher, wife and deacon have joint brain fart, go inside to investigate. They find a bad guy in a stall in a bathroom. Preacher (I think) pulls his handgun on the badguy (I think after kicking in the stall door). Bad guy is close to arm's reach. Bad guy takes handgun away from preacher, shoots 2 of the 3, jumps in truck and drives off. Come to find out, bad guy is being sought for major recent crime, and pickup he's driving is stolen. Moral of story: Don't have brain farts when it comes to deadly conduct. Don't play citizen Deputy Dog. Instead, get out of the building quickly, get in your vehicle, get a safe distance away while calling 911.
But realistically that’s what happens in combat, you kick doors sometimes and people die, why say no civilian would have any business doing so when in the scenario you brought up they absolutely would? Makes no sense.
@@tebelel7150 What you are saying makes no sense. "Realistically," preacher, wife and deacon aren't "in combat." They are preacher, wife and deacon coming to churchhouse to get ready for church service. You come to your church, your business or your house and find a door forced open, with or without a strange vehicle parked outside, you back away and call PD or SO, and they come and handle it. But if, on the other hand, you decide to do something stupid, like play "combat," then you have a good chance of getting killed. When people get killed, it's usually because they are doing something stupid.
@@tebelel7150 unless you have a highly trained team that has endlessly practiced repetitions of building clearing, full support line to facilitate extracting casualties, and medics to get the casualties to a hospital / field hospital… then you or your whole team will die clearing a building of a trained enemy that have defensive positions. Like I said.. as a civilian guerrilla warfare is the only way to combat this scenario without getting your entire team wiped out. As for the preacher scenario, if there wasn’t someone inside whose life was at risk from the break in then just let the cops handle it.. strictly because I don’t want to die / Jill someone and deal with the paperwork when I don’t need to. If my family was in there then yes, I would charge in and have no hesitation to drop the enemy. Hesitation = dead in a gun fight.
I, and many others, said the same exact thing about the MK18... when it was designed and produced. It's a highly-specific weapon designed in accordance with requirements set out by SOCOM (probably JSOC, and probably Delta or SEALs). Minimal practicality for the civilian, aside from perhaps a compact vehicle-stored weapon. Get the longer barrel (14.5 gives you a full twist) and get the most in terminal effects from your projectile. That's the point after all... terminal effects.
@@chuckfinley3152 The bullet jacket doesn't have full engagement into the rifling until after the jump, and after a non-trivial portion of travel through the bore, while the copper is conforming to the grooves. Longer if it is a parabolic progressive twist barrel. I won't get into the associated nuance of non-linear internal velocity and gas blow-by, but thanks for playing.
@@Pattamatt1998 I hate to admit it but you’re right. It’s such an ugly rifle but it’s got 0 recoil and can do well in both medium and long range combat. ACW-R for close range though. The RPM on it is insane.
I had a noveske mk18 10.5” I took to several classes. The accuracy started to suffer around 10-12k and the groups widened but it was still accurate enough. I only replaced the buffer and buffer spring. I didn’t see any cracks. It really opened my eyes as to how reliable a properly built shorty can be. It did shoot steel fine. I sold the upper at around 12-13k and it was still shooting fine. I rebuilt the lower and slapped a noveske 12.5” upper on it. But is the mk18 obsolete? No.
Correct me if I am wrong… isn’t a MK18 equipped with a 10.3” DD barrel, to my knowledge a MK18 has NOTHING made by Noveske on it correct? I could be wrong and may learn something here.
Military logistics aside, if I get 10k good rounds out of my specialist rifle I call that a win. After 10K rounds I'm more than satisfied replacing a $150-200 barrel.
Uh… you shot out the barrel. That is going to happen on every rifle after you fire it ten thousand times. Barrel life is a total of about five seconds of actual use time. Put that much through a 14.5” and it’ll do the same thing.
You’re actually purchasing something that’s legal. $200 “processing fee.” For something less powerful because of the shorter barrel when most gun crimes committed with handguns. With even smaller barrel. Definitely extortion.
@@FuzzNiner On top of that virtually everything they "regulate" is just something made to make firearms more safe for the user or beginners. ARs are overall slightly better than AKs but not to the extent where it will matter for most people. Being able to replace barrels without a press is pretty nice though
Dwell time isn't a problem if you're using a supressor, (which you should be doing anyway). Fragmentation is also no problem when using high quality ammunition (which you should be doing anyway). Parts wear is no problem if using an adjustable gas block (which you should be doing anyway). 10,3" is still king if used properly and can cover any distance you will most likely engage at in an urban enviroment.
Always hated Babybel cheese since I tried one when I was like 10. About 6 months ago I watched somebody peel the red shit off before they ate it. I like Babybel cheese now.
You know with the science in mind, you'd think they would regulate LONG barrels since it is MORE effective, and it is less effective from a shorter barrel
I do agree with you, but that’s just not as true as everyone wants to believe. The truth is, longer barrels = more velocity = more catastrophic wound channels. But let’s not act like a single 5.56 round out of even a 6” barrel won’t kill someone. I don’t agree with it, but I can understand the SBR law due to the fact of it being so much easier to conceal the rifle and get the drop on people especially in a crowded public area. But still, to Mike’s point, Fuck The NFA
The Mk18 is a military designation for a modified M4a1, originally designated the CQBR. On the newest versions they have Daniel Defense rails. Daniel Defense now produces their own version of the military Mk18 but it is not the same one.
The super short ar has been a thing since Vietnam, a "clone correct" mk18 might have fallen out of favor but a 10-12" sbr with some sort of free float rail and a suppressor mount is an extremely useful setup for those few people who actually use an ar for work that they can say what goes on it. So it really depends what you consider a mk18.
@@davidduran9797 gau5, colt commando, xm177. The army (and AF) keeps reinventing the wheel when someone says i need a really short gun thats not a pistol caliber because that sucks for anything beyond 100, so someone says we have the m16/m4, lest chop the barrel and have a brand new gun, maneuverability is too important of an advantage to give up, so short guns will stay around until we have exoskeletons with arm laser, and even then someone's gonna say chop off something to make it better.
Yeah, I think the MK-18 is very close to a perfect close quarter weapon, I think my only gripe is that there are much lighter, and stronger rails especially with the newer carbon fiber ones.
Mk18 made a 10.5 usable. M4 exists for a reason. It has the original 10.5" gas system with the correct dwell time. Mk18 modified the gas system so that it actually functions reliably. With a suppressor it won't blow out your eardrums, especially indoors. That doesn't mean it's ideal, it only makes sense if the extra 4 inches from an M4 are unbearable. I would say those cases are few and far between. Bear in mind as a civvy, you can own a 14.7" with a pin and weld without a tax stamp. You're probably a larper if you buy one of these things, but if you do; you're already paying the tax stamp, just get the can.
Crane spec 0.070 gas port size on carbine 10.3" barrel IMO. Depending on ammo I run carbine buffer for break in. After that I run H buffer. And then when I suppress dependent on ammo I run either H or H2. It's all ammo choice dependant though.
I once picked an AK mag off a scav where the first 15 rounds were 7.62x39 and the last 15 rounds were .336 TKM. I was sad when i put it in my gun and it didn't explode

Im of the mindset of having multiple weapons each one dedicated to a specific task. My first AR was built around being a jack of all trades. 16" barrel with a 1.5-5x magnifier. Next gun is a full rifle cartilage LPR for those longer engagements.
time to thicken that skin lmao jk I am about to possibly build a shorty as well, I'm thinkin 11.5-12.5 though, as I have a 10.5 already damn autocorrect fucked me lol
@@kaisercollins3097 It’s just a super lightweight build for a new suppressor. I have a 14.5 with all the bells and whistles. I remember reading the CRANE study a decade ago saying 10.5” was as short as you could go and still call the AR reliable.
Not a Mk18 guy but I stopped worrying about fragmentation a long time ago. If we go by the 2700 fps claim for 55gr, and we believe fragmentation is necessary, then a 20" AR is only effective to 150yds. I don't think anyone out there thinks that's the case.
Neutralizing a target doesn’t necessarily mean landing a lethal target. It just means stopping them from firing at you. You’re correct, fragmentation isn’t everything
The ballistic performance issue is why I like my AUG. 18" barrel unsuppressed is about the same length as a MK18 with the stock extended, and I get an extra 7.7" of performance.
Dear Flannel Daddy: Thank you for mentioning one of the biggest lessons I try to teach my soldiers about MOUT that doesn't get discussed anywhere near enough. Urban ops isn't just clearing rooms, it's a mixture of extremely close and medium to long range engagements with very little in between. If your enemy is not in your face he's 400m down the road with almost no cover and concealment between the two of you.
14.5" or 13.7" barrels are still pretty easy to maneuver around structures and when used with a pinned and welded muzzle device don't have to be registered as an sbr allowing you to use a proper stock and offer better muzzle velocity. This is why under most circumstances I recommend them over the 10.5" barrel. Ultimately it's not about the length of your barrel it's how you use it.
This is why I run a 16 inch as my apocalypse gun. Good enough for the forests and swamps in the south, not too too long, but not all the problems shorties have. Along with a lightweight bolt gun for really long shots.
If you ever felt like the guy in the other lane was shooting a m2 .50 cal but it turned out to just be an unsuppressed 8" 556 go ahead and hit that subscribe button
Guy next to me had a 20ish inch AR style bolt action in 308 with a nice compensator on it. Everytime he shot it felt like I was getting whacked on the head: made for the best range day ever.
I would say the LMT MRP system is the true game changer, especially with barrels you can hotswap. If you need a shorter length like VBSS guys do because fuck having longer barrels while clearing ships, then cool, but being able to swap length, caliber, and able to adjust to a situation's requirements on the fly is where it's at.
I've read reports where Speer 223 gold dots passed within an inch of a bad guy's heart and said bad guy didn't stop shooting. It's ALL about shot placement. That being the case, give me something that's going to stay intact, and penetrate deep and straight. If it doesn't work I want that to be my fault. I don't want to do my part and have it fail because it fragmented or veered off course. I would also add that shot placement is a numbers game. No matter how good you are, you're not going to hit a moving target in the heart offhand all the time, or even most of the time. It's all about putting the most rounds in the smallest circle in the least amount of time possible. It's not hard to get good enough to where you're statistically highly likely to hit something vital at close range. But if your bullets are fragmenting and veering off course, that doesn't help your odds any, particularly if barriers, heavy clothing, or linebacker body types are in play. Shoot, even if it's a skinny dude, he's more than likely going to be at some weird oblique angle and have his arms up. You don't want to be that guy who would have lived had his bullet gone one inch deeper instead of fragmenting. Regarding the dwell time, 40% sounds like a lot, until you consider that an M4 has like 300% more dwell time. Or more even. I don't know, math isn't my thing, but it's a lot. So if the M4 is the whole pie, even the 11.5 is still a pretty small piece. It's like still the same piece of pie, the 11.5 just has a little dab of whipped cream on top. I would go at it more from the perspective of what's available. Like if you have a real Colt 10.3 barrel, I would take that over some random 11.5 all day every day. Or if a commando upper were like a grand, which they are, and I had a real Colt marked M4 upper, I would chop that M4 upper to 10.3 before paying extortionist prices for the commando. I can find true to TDP 2010 era 6920s for a grand or so, pay ADCO another 75 to chop, and have less in the whole gun than what a commando upper costs these days. Um, gas ports. I know from personal experience that a Crane spec CQBR upper will not reliably cycle steel case 223 with an H2 buffer. You would either have to drop down to a carbine buffer or clip a coil. They will cycle in warm weather, but they won't lock back with all mags. That's without a suppressor of course. With a can on there, they would probably run an H3 buffer even. Can't remember if I've tried it or not, but I'm relatively confident they would. I know they will cycle with an H3 and cheap brass 223, which is pretty similar. Oh and the velocity thing. You have to consider that the M16 is intended for several hundred yards, whereas the Mk18 is basically meant to fill the roll of a submachinegun without the limitations of one. So at the ranges where a Mk18 is useful, I think on average you're looking at very similar velocities. E.g. the velocity at point blank would be similar to the velocity of an M16 at 200 yards or so, all else being equal. Especially with a can on the Mk18. In any case, I would rather have a Mk18 than an MP5. Nobody ever had to take a 300 yard shot with a Mk18 and said, Dammit I wish I had my MP5 for this.
I personally love the m4 carbine platform and do believe for general use it’s the best setup. I personally run 16” with a suppressor, for what I do it’s more than sufficient.
I agree with your points about projectile velocity, flash signature and dwell time. That's why I went with a midlength 12.5 barrel, adjustable gas block and a Smith Vortex flash hider. 👌
hearing him talk about weapon durability and reliability always makes me wish we had a shooting game where you have to pay attention to weapon upkeep, so aside from just buying upgrades, you're also buying to replace worn out parts.
The hunting community has all sorts of bullets that are purpose built to offer expansion at lower velocities so that reliable expansion can be achieved at greater ranges as the bullet slows down. This also means that they remain lethal at the lower velocities associated with shorter barrels. The 60gr ballistic tip is a great performer on furry critters and that’s what is loaded in my AR magazines. If it will turn the chest cavity of a deer into soup, it will work on two-legged critters as well.
I never changed anything in my mk18 at 13k rounds and it was still chugging along when I sold the upper to someone else. Original bolt, barrel, extractor, etc.
@@sbuyce1 to be fair the only genuine problem I've really heard about is the firing pin being slightly too long, over penetrating the primer. I could take a grinder to that pin and shave off like half a milimetre at a time, until it's perfect. Or just buy a couple additional firing pins. There are probably better options in 7.62x39, but I'd like to train in 5.45 since that is what I will most likely be issued in service
@@AlphaOneDesigns I was mad that my $670 Black Friday Super Duty upper came in months late but then Geissele gave me a coupon which I sold for $200, an SF three-prong I sold for $90 and a barrel that is both phosphated and chrome lined. I don’t like 16” at all really. Kind of pointless honestly. 14.5” will do anything the 16” can do and if you need even further range with velocity go to 18” to old school 20”. 16” to me is...obsolete
@@sendit7922 I agree if a 16" barrel has a carbine system. It's a good balance with a midlength. That said, I also have a 14.5 with a pinned brake and it's my favorite rifle.

That’s my strategy defensive retreat. I don’t have an army, so that’s the best way to go when the shtf
The benefits of a larger magnification lpvo is target identification. Not necessarily longer engagements.
Even if they are 100 yards away you can most likely run away

@T G way ahead of you my guy
You had me at " fuck the nfa" 😍
I’m glad you brought up kicking in doors and clearing room to room as a great way to die.. most people have no business kicking in doors against an armed and trained enemy. Civilian defense on a large scale will depend on guerrilla warfare and ambush tactics. Kicking doors and bounding towards a trained target will almost certainly guarantee a combat casualty.
Any man can kill, everybody dies

Dear Flannel Daddy:
Thank you for mentioning one of the biggest lessons I try to teach my soldiers about MOUT that doesn't get discussed anywhere near enough.

I went from 10.5 to 11.5 because some of these videos. Thanks man. Also traded out my psa upper for aero so probably better for me in the long run

“If you don’t know about dwell time, just stick with me for a little bit 🤯🤯🤯”
hearing him talk about weapon durability and reliability always makes me wish we had a shooting game where you have to pay attention to weapon upkeep, so aside from just buying upgrades, you're also buying to replace worn out parts.
Check out Fallout New Vegas, you can cannabilize like weapons to repair yours AND you can even hand load ammo. 😉😎
I think escape from tarkov includes this.
@@jeffforbess6802 just weapon durability at the moment sadly
@@sirsuccmegood7187 but you do replace parts that have durability canned therefore bringing up overall weapon durability
tarkov...
simple fixes for some listed issues,
1: Heavy buffer
2: SSS rifle spring
3: Adjustable gas block
4: Take the time to "tune" your rifle!!!!
We need a new science episode. What happens to a ballistic torso when firing at distances with different barrel lengths.

Hi, I miss u, please put out another video, k, thnx, by.
Ah, Travis' son!
This is intriguing, any good manufacturers
Watching this guy talking about changing half of parts every 5000 rounds remembering i havent replaced anything in my AK ever since i bought it :D
I never changed anything in my mk18 at 13k rounds and it was still chugging along when I sold the upper to someone else. Original bolt, barrel, extractor, etc.
@@Mykaelous you got a good one. Normally you have to replace psa parts before you shoot
@@sbuyce1 nooo i need a 5.45 rifle and psa is my only hope nooo
@@pissyourselfandshitncoom2172 lol then there is no hope
@@sbuyce1 to be fair the only genuine problem I've really heard about is the firing pin being slightly too long, over penetrating the primer.
I could take a grinder to that pin and shave off like half a milimetre at a time, until it's perfect. Or just buy a couple additional firing pins.
There are probably better options in 7.62x39, but I'd like to train in 5.45 since that is what I will most likely be issued in service
Mk 18 proves small things get the job done just like my package.
A 10.5 inch barrel is perfect when I'm clearing corners on my way to the kitchen.
Peak PSI in the chamber on a 20" is something like 1/10th of what it has to be on a 10.5

I'm going to find more ways to use the terms "fragment" and "yaw" in my daily conversations. Long live the long barreled rifle.
New urgi version has an 11.5" Daniel defense barrel and that geissele rail
11.5 is the way to go for shortest barrel, while getting the maximum terminal effect and best dwell time for reliability.
@@stevewhisperer6609 yep agree
Grimey G. Make sure you oil their barrels lo
@@AlphaOneDesigns I was mad that my $670 Black Friday Super Duty upper came in months late but then Geissele gave me a coupon which I sold for $200, an SF three-prong I sold for $90 and a barrel that is both phosphated and chrome lined. The upper wasn’t bad either (super nice suppressed).
$380 well spent, I’d say 😁
Nuts that people are spending $1200 for these uppers with some cut rate oxide finish.
That’s the shit
Anyone else feel that more people would willingly admit to enjoying 16" rifles more if SBRs weren't NFA items?
I enjoy 16 more but SBR is more practical in tight spaces
I don’t like 16” at all really. Kind of pointless honestly. 14.5” will do anything the 16” can do and if you need even further range with velocity go to 18” to old school 20”. 16” to me is...obsolete
Now that’s a hot take
@@sendit7922 I agree if a 16" barrel has a carbine system. It's a good balance with a midlength. That said, I also have a 14.5 with a pinned brake and it's my favorite rifle.
I like ar15s nice and short. If I need more power at longer ranges I grab my 18" ar10.
Palmetto has 10.5 quad rail upper , with fn barrel , Microbest bcg , adjustable gas block and all that for 600 buckos. Best deal for 10.5 upper. Makes psa haters screech too, while they try to justify DD upper for 2k which has broken firing pins before 3000 shots 🤣
As long as there is up close combat, there will be a need for a rifle suited to that kind of combat.
Garand Thumb: Comments are a little dull
Commenters: Hold my daddy issues
I have a colt M-16A1. Cut a 16” barrel and it ran fine. But my thinking as a car guy was...hmmmm more gas =s more speed. I bored out the gas port a weee little bit and my god it did not like that. When I finally found the right buffer and spring combo it runs so fast.
