  • Did you know the last Blockbuster in America is in Bend, Oregon? In 2004, the company went from over 9,000 locations worldwide to exactly one in America. But in this streaming age, is there anything we can learn from Blockbuster? We traveled to Oregon to find out.

I can see it happening to book stores though, since people are starting to read mostly on the internet.

      Nah, they didn’t want to sell out, which is understandable and commendable. Netflix would’ve devoured Blockbuster, just like you see with things such as Disney devouring and ruining everything else. Blockbuster wouldn’t have lasted and wouldn’t have had the same effect or nostalgia it has today if it continued. Not only that, but it would be more modernized, there’s countless examples of old would-be “nostalgic” companies that are around still to this day that you don’t pay any attention to, or have grown to be terrible over time. Truth is, if those companies went away, you’d probably have the same feeling of nostalgia, only now that it’s gone.

We couldn't even afford to leave lights on at night. • @nnozen
      @nnozen 6 років тому +63

      Me too, but it's not their fault the TV networks are pulling their shows/charging crazy licensing fees. On top of having to pay the Internet providers so they don't slow down Netflix, it might be economically better to just push originals and earn more rather than pay licenses and make less

    • @isaacroebuck9514
      @isaacroebuck9514 6 років тому +13

      It's not really about the originals forcing out the old ones, they rotate externally developed content based on a specific licensing agreement. And they don't have to pay any recurring fees for original content other than storage and hosting which is negligible at this scale. However, they will be less inclined to accept licensing deals with steeper fees and lower margins if they can just put that money into original content and make more money overall. That really all falls to the publishers at the and of the day, they're having a little hissey fit at the moment. But rest assured, once they realize they have no chance to make it on their own, they'll come groveling back just like they always do.

      I remember the last Movie rental store closed 7 years ago. It was called More than movies. The blockbuster closed when I was about 12 years old. The feeling of going out and choosing a movie not knowing if it is good or not unless someone tells you. Plus for what you pay for a day of renting a movie online would get you 7 days at Blockbuster. I think they could make a comeback eventually

    The minute you walked in, you knew you had entered an electronic library. That “fresh tape” smell you get when you unwrap a brand new dvd... it was like that, on 100. But it was a good smell. With a hint of sweetness from the move theater candy. And those thick as hell plastic bags. What was lost in all this was an experience that people (like myself) in this era relished on Friday or Saturday night. There was a joy in trips to the video store that got taken for granted. I wouldn’t mind going to a Blockbuster again, to scope out new releases and old fav’s amidst their stellar, OCD level of video rental organization, and just talk about what’s good.

    I have mixed feelings...My sister and brother-in-law used to own a video store and Blockbuster put them out of business. But years later, I did like how large and bright the stores were, how you could always find the movie you wanted because there were so many copies, the variety of snacks they had and just feeling that overall good mood vibe you felt as you picked out a movie that would become part of a fun evening ahead. We need stores like that in communities now that all the bookstores like Borders are gone as well.
