Every group of people needs a hero. He was not lame. He was just like all of the Metis/Mechif people that have put themselves out there to improve the conditions of all people, not just themselves, then and still yet today. He happened to be educated and in a better position than most to help his people. He did not lead people that did not want to be led. All natives, full and half alike, are painfully aware of poor government treatment. They never stood a chance but they should be remembered for their valor and bravery. The Metis are still here, and still fighting for recognition, and the rights of others, not only for other Metis, but for all indigenous peoples. In the end, Riel wins!!!

Some inaccuracies if anyone's interestd: The Soldiers uniforms are pretty inaccurate, they wouldn't of had brown leather cartridge belts on top of their white ones instead they would of had a white ammunition pouch on the right front and a cartridge box slung over the left shoulder on the right hip, the Artillery would of wore Dark Blue uniforms and not khaki, khaki was first worn officially by the Canadian Military in the 2nd Boer war. The Artillery would of been 9 Pounders the ones in the film are a earlier kind of cannon. The drill is the modern kind of drill, in the Northwest Rebellion they wouldn't of swung arms they would of kept them by their side. Various other inacuracies are through out the film but it's still nice to see the war portrayed in a movie.

Some inaccuracies? 1. Gabriel Dumont was at Upper Fort Garry for about 2 weeks and he was very young. He never took part in the Fort Garry events. 2. The Red River in the film is like a creek, (Elzear Goulet scene) being right next to the river, I swear I wouldn'T go swimming in it. Elzear was not shot. According to witnesses, he was stoned to death. 3. Father André is in Ottawa negociating the province of MB, it was L'Abbé Noël Ritchot who was the negociator. 4. Hillarious. Thomas Scott was not a land surveyor.

After some brief establishing crowd coverage, the first close-up shot of the first human face we see in this film is...William Shatner! It's 1979 and he's back home, slumming it in Canadian cinema for a brief, but extremely distracting, cameo in the first shot of the film! When the camera pans off him, he continues to be heard in the background, braying continuously throughout the rest of the opening scene! After a few seconds the scene ends, and that's a wrap on Captain Kirk

The early French Migrants to North America acted and behaved far better and respected the First Nations far better then most of the British ever did. So, it resulted in one of the biggest blunders and land grabs of all times.
First Nation people in CAN just got CAN citzenship granted in the 1960's,
and in the U.S. in the 1930's. Which is a total lack of respecting minorities and treating them fair, honest and in an apropriate way.
