- I use this method to quickly plant carrots. Carrots make great spring and fall crops. Give them loose soil and plant them a couple inches apart using this finger hole method. The like the cool weather and can tolerate frost.

I planted carrots last September in Southern California when we were having triple digit temperatures. I put a thick layer of newspaper over the soil after planting, and soaked it well each morning and evening. It kept the soil damp, and all my seeds germinated. First time I managed to grow carrots here in the fall.
I do that also. I use brown grocery bags. Started a few years ago and my carrot production has never been better. Now I plant less seeds, really concentrate on trying to place one or two at a time. Saves seeds and then having to thin and waste all those plants.
Cool tip

I Also use a board or cardboard over carrots for several days till they start sprouting, to keep them moist and dark!
Like this idea of loose soil in a container - I'm on clay, in zone 8b
Fabulous. Totally adding to my rotation. I am really new to the "cooler" weather vegetables. Did carrots in the spring and they were marvelous. They seemed to deal with the early heat better than lettuce and spinach. As you have mentioned, in my zone, the transition from winter to spring to summer is really a transition from too cold to too hot. The summer to fall transition works much better. I am finally getting why a lot of gardeners get excited this time of year.
Iim looking forward to the fall transition. I hope it is slow.
Thanks! I really like planting in fabric pots!!! I have run out of room in my raised garden so they have proved to be a great alternative!!
They are becoming my favorite for potatoes and carrots

So excited I ordered two of your huge 100 gallon root fabric pots yesterday. Can't wait to start growing in them!!!! Thanks Gary!
Thanks for the order for sure. I really love the 100 gallons. We had 150s but I found they don't give you that much more growing room and cost more to fill. Id rather do 2 100 gallons. Thanks again

I've been doing carrots in containers for several years. I have very rocky clay soil and it's the only way to get nice straight, long carrots. Did it in grow bags for the first time this year. Watered seedlings twice a day for last two weeks because of the heat and they are in full sun. They dry out really fast, faster than regular containers.
They sure do and the heat has been crazy. Finally 85 today.

Great video as usual. As a marketing professional, can I recommend you find another style of type for you titles? Trying to help. Red and yellows are particularly hard for eye to read and they are not very attractive. Makes my eye want to pass but your post. Just a suggestion because I appreciate your content so much.
Thanks. So I had white. People said the same about white. I had nothing and people said I need titles. I believe you but just don't know what to pic. LOL.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Totally get it. Technically white is a bad type face as well. Think about what the eye reads every day. That’s what the eye gravitates to naturally - dark on light back ground. Most deviations are minimal - for impact on messaging but the majority of type styles are dark on light. (The eye also doesn’t read a lot of caps well. So you never want to use all caps a lot.) You might look through magazines, on bill boards, on TV. Find two or three examples you like. Of course you could always get a professional but that can be more than you want to spend. Just remember someone won’t read what is hard on the eye. Your content is spectacular! I just don’t want anyone to miss it. Good luck!
Try the corn starch and water in a ziplock bag add carrot seeds

Any size really. You can get more or less in based on surface area

Hey Gary any advice on what size bucket is needed for overwintering peppers. Thanks.
I would try and now with 2 gallons. 1 gallon did work for me but the larger containers seemed better.

What are your thoughts on having a bug zapper light by your garden? Do you think it would get rid of the bag bugs or attract more? I cannot make up my mind.
If it killed the white butterfly, I would do it. I don't really know to be honest. It depends if the light would attract the bad bugs.

My sweet potato vines froze last week. 😒 The tubers are all like twisty orange pencils. Next time I guess they'll go in the greenhouse.
I made my soil really loose this year. I'll see how the did in a few weeks

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Yes, mine was loose, too. We got a really late spring, though, and I was late putting them out besides, so...
I'm newish to gardening. I'd appreciate advice; I'm getting no success here in the Philippines with potatoes and carrots. The temperature is almost exactly 30/86F year round. Am I wasting my time with these vegetables? The likes of beans, eggplants and sweet potatoes thrive here, but carrots and potatoes are two of my favourites.
Now at 86F you can probably grow most anything. Learning about the diseases and insects will be the key

Gary, an off topic question. I've been using hydrogen peroxide as a preventative for powdery mildew on phlox and a few other things, after seeing your recommendation. Seems to work and so great that it's nontoxic for the usual reasons, plus I have chemical sensitivity. I'm wondering if you think it can help at all to prevent boxwood blight. I know it's a risk, but I really want some boxwood in my informal ornamental garden. Planning to buy 'Winter Gem' which is in the "somewhat resistant" category of box. Thanks.
In theory yes. But you should test spray and see how leaves react. Any new plant that is good to do.

Hi! I have a 10 gallon fabric pot . Is that too small for carrots? I am a beginner in zone 7b. Also, is it too late to plant my seeds?
No. You a space them like 2 inches apart. They will grow.

Do you have an tips for planting the tiny carrot seeds?
Have patience 😊
Make a little tray with a little glass of water, a pencil with a tip, and put your seeds on a saucer or in wide lid. Dip the tip of the pencil in water and just put it next to the seed you want to pick up... draws it up like a magnet. That way you don't have to handle all the seeds in your hand and potentially drop them. You need to be able to roll a few away from the rest so you aren't getting them all wet... just the one or two you're picking up. I learned that trick from Home Grown Veg who grows a lot of carrots in buckets... it works!
Nope. I just roll them in and try to stop at 2. Many of these have 4 seeds in them. Ill just thing to the best.

I've just about given up on gardening due to torpedo grass. It's horrible and seems invincible.
Containers or maybe spray late fall, kill it and plant the following year. Not perfect solution

Do the seedlings need a lot of sun or no ? I planted the seeds in a pot and they all died :( it did rain a lot in Southern California recently and the sun hasn’t been out much. I’m not sure why the seedlings all died and some that are alive are not doing good. I’m so sad. Thank you in advance 🤍🤍🤍
They need sun but the can die off early for other reason. Prolong damp soil, snails, lots of things. Sorry I can help more
