  • 'Early potatoes' does not mean plant early in the season. It means matures the earliest of the potato categories. They mature in 70-90 days. Here is how I plant them in containers. Easy success and you can plant them in June and July too.

    Thank you so much for this video. I missed buying potatoes in the spring so I sprouted 4 small red potatoes under my sink a few weeks ago and today I planted them in a 10 gallon grow bag. I put them in the my garden under a shade cloth for now because it's suppose to be in the higher 90° this week. I only had the Plant Tone and the 511 and potting mix. I followed your instructions and I'm hoping for a great harvest. My frost date is not until November 10th zone 8a Va so I have plenty of time. It's only 2 of us in my household so hopeful that will be enough until I can sprout more. I have some white potatoes under my sink now. Again thank you 😊

    I followed your method last year and had a great harvest from 3 -10 gallon bags. (My 1st time ever growing potatoes) It was so much fun, this Spring I planted 8 -10 gallon bags. I just harvested those and they did fantastic! I’m getting ready to plant the fall potatoes so I came here to refresh my memory.
    I read a comment on another thread about a grandfather who would “stomp down” the stalks of his potatoes about 1 month before harvest. Here’s what I experienced with my Spring crop… the 2 bags at the end of my row looked like something had wallered them down. Probably Mother Nature since we’ve had some rather heavy rains. I tried to blame my cat, but realized he was innocent, so I let him live. (that’s just a joke. I would never hurt my cat.) What I did notice was that the potatoes in those 2 bags were the bigger potatoes. Not huge, but bigger than the other 6 bags. I did plant 3 potatoes, or pieces in each bag so I wasn’t expecting them to be big. However, I do plan to bend the stalks on this next planting to see if they all product larger potatoes. This planting will be Yukon Gold and only 2 potatoes per bag, so not expecting anything huge.
    I wanted to share that with your viewers because I thought it was rather interesting. Thank you for your simple and easy way of gardening. And I love seeing your hands in the dirt without gloves. That’s exactly how I garden!

    You explained the process well. I am ready to plant some potatoes in large grow bags. I enjoy your channel so much. This is my first year for a garden. I’m doing it all in containers. It’s a real learning experience. I’m hoping for greater yields next year. I will say my tomatoes have NOT had blossom end rot. At least I’m doing something right with my tomatoes.

    Hi Gary, Love your videos!
    I have really appreciated your detailed instructions for pest and disease control recipes. There is so much vague information out there, but you give great information. Thank you! I have asked for your book for my birthday!
    I am in Manitoba, Canada - so zone 3! I also have very poor clay soil, so most of my gardening is in containers. My tomatoes do incredibly well in 5 gallon pails! Cucumbers thrive in 3 gallon ice cream buckets!
    I have been growing potatoes in 10 and 15 gal. green vinyl growing bags. I have used Yukon Gold, fingerling, and Red Norland. I use potting mix (peat base) with added bone and blood meal and fertilize every two weeks with a Water soluble “potato fertilizer” 6-16-12 and some organic sea magic. Lots of water. For three years I have got tons of luxuriant top growth, a few blooms, but only a few scattered potatoes. Maybe six or seven med spuds per bag.
    One site source said the soil could get too hot in the sun, another that I may have planted too many seed potatoes and they sense they are overcrowded. (I have planted more per bag this year as I tried two layers instead of filling gradually.) I would appreciate any thoughts! Keep up the great videos!

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks for the book support. You have great temps for smaller container. That is rare. So glad you are having success Not sure on the potatoes but I would stop the water soluble but for 1x at planting. And get rid of the blood meal. Bone meal and any other basic organic granular with NPK represented. Blood meal is too much nitrogen IMO. For potatoes that is. I would also experiment. 1 bucket with few, 1 over crowded and the others as you normally do. Stick one in a shadier place. But I think its excess nitrogen.

I lost track of how old they were and they did what comes naturally- eyes everywhere. I planted them in a large Styrofoam container where I poked holes in the bottom. Few things we do...we use hard sided large nursery pots we got via free cycle then drill large (2”) holes with a spade but in the bottom AND the sides just above where it meets the bottom then bury the pots in a 3-4” deep trench to give the roots room to run down thru into good soil. Also make sure to have a plan to support your greens, they grow MUCH larger & healthier due to the increased airflow. We also hit em with worm tea at least twice a season if not more..replenish the microbiology in the soil in those pots...

I will see how the yield is after harvest but from the previous year when missed potatoes popped up, the yield on them was better than the spring planted potatoes. If the yield on these fall planted potatoes is good, I might do a bigger planting of them this fall.

    Awesome video! I planted fingerling potatoes in your 100 gallon root pouch. Plants are huge and fabulous. But sadly, I believe fingerlings are "late" potatoes - which means we have a while. :) I'll do early next time. Also - I've read recently that "hilling" only helps potatoes stay protected from sunlight as they grow; the idea of hilling to increase growth on the stem and increase overall yield is a myth. Your thoughts? Thanks as always!

When the plant has died then I harvest. What do you recommend I do differently to help my potatoes grow? Thank you so much!
