  • My basic method for planting fall brassica transplants. I also show you how I used repurposed fruit tree covers to create and insect barrier for my newly planted kale, broccoli and related plants. This is a way to reduce your need for any kind of spray or insect dust. It is very effective.

For larger coverage, look for tulle fabric by the yard. You can find it online for less than 50 cents USD a yard which can be used over low tunnels. You will need some scrap lumber or pipes to weigh down the edges so the cabbage moths or borers can’t get in.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN I wonder if there is a liquid UV protector you could dip fabric in. I have read old newspapers from the 1870/80s that say to used oiled muslin to make cold frames to extend your season.

I did tulle fabric this last year to keep birds off my strawberries and cherry toms and was thinking of it for this too, but I noticed bees stuck on the tulle. their legs get stuck on it. Saw a few dead ones and was able to get a live one off. did you notice any bees sticking to yours? I really don't want to continue using it, if bees are going to die on it, as I am trying to get as many bees as I can in my garden.

I started using netting in June to keep being birds off of my cabbages. Once I saw how awesome it was, I ordered more. I have also used the plastic row covers to help my peppers and eggplants stay warm. It's been unusually cold. Mid 80's. I am picking up 8 more plastic row covers on Friday. It has helped me have a better season than many other gardeners on my allotment garden.

Dang.I thought I could wait to put out my brassicas till the moths were gone. But they stay around, huh? I tried net for the first time this year and it didn't work well. I see with this video that I should've used some Captain Jack (never used it) and then put the net over. Second year I've tried cabbage, broc, caul and lost it all due to those moths. A little better with kale. I'm so hoping I can get a fall harvest of those veggies. I have the transplants ready! I'll definitely follow this approach. Thank you.

The key is to get them covered BEFORE the buggars have access! The white butterflies go crazy around the mesh all day. 😄 Somehow one got into the cabbage bed, or maybe it had already laid eggs I missed before putting the mesh over the bed. ( I had changed covers from a light spring cover to mesh, early summer.) Found several caterpillars, a bunch of cocoons, and disposed of all of that, then gave up and sprayed with spinosad so any chewers left behind will die. A week later, I found a cabbage luper trying to get out! So, I missed a cocoon... but it didn't have a mate. Whew!
I love the mesh because I can still water and fertilize right through it. Will make sure I KEEP them covered from seedling next time.

I tried brussel sprouts one year as my experimental crop and they were beautiful but in the end I had to take them out because of the cabbage moths. I tried spraying and squishing and spent a lot of time on them… it was quite frustrating and I never tried again. I may give it a go next year with the cloth….and I think I may grow transplants to put in the garden for early fall instead of spring. 🤔I’ve been using the agri cloth on several other crops and it works great. I didn’t have very good luck using bamboo stakes because it poked holes in the fabric but I found some bamboo u shaped hoops that worked. Next trip to HD I’ll be looking for the ladder mesh. thanks for the video great info as always.

You have to want to be a gardener to grow great veggies because it is work and an expense. But you also know exactly what your food was grown in and how. That outweighs the disappointments that come with gardening
