    It gets really expensive to fill 10 and 20 gallon containers for one plant. We have been growing indeterminate tomatoes in 7 gallon fabric bags for 8 years and before that 5 gallon buckets with high yields and healthy 7-8 foot plants. Peppers 2 plants to a 7 gallon same thing. We quit growing our tomatoes and peppers in ground after discovering the grow bags and wish we would of had them 25 years ago. Maybe zone 5b makes the difference. I would encourage those on a budget to do the best they can with what they can afford. We have 7 foot tall elderberry bushes in 10 gallon grow bags.... more berries then we know what to do with! Just sayin. Happy Gardening!

      That works. I grew in beefsteaks in 5 gallon buckets for years but I am guessing you have a lot of experience and really have the watering and feeding down. I also make my container mix from yard earth scraps and peat moss. Big money saver. No worries.

    I started using fabric pots last year for the first time and I am hooked!! There's still a time and place for a traditional pot (for aesthetic reasons like on the front porch), but I have bought so many fabric pots, that my garden has more of them than anything else.

    I've placed my grow bags in portable dog baths! They are like kiddy pools, but they're collapsible, more space-efficient due to having vertical walls, and fold up into a very small package.
    I love the built-in drain, and that you can buy them in varying sizes from around 30 inch to 80 inch diameter.
    This is my first year gardening and it's been a massive learning experience, with many wins and losses already. Thank you again Gary for your amazing work in bringing us this great channel!

    Hi Gary so nice to see grow pots. :) This year I am trying out a smaller spaghetti squash variety called Small Wonder, it produces hard-shelled squash that are about a kilogram in size and about fifteen cm long by about twelve cm in diameter. Last year I pciked up some grow pots that are much taller than they are around, they are 26 L / 7 gallons. I'm going to try out one of these Small Wonders in that kind of pot and see how it does, usually I reserve it for patio sized cuke plants. ANYways, just wondering if you've got thoughts on when tall, narrower pots are appropriate, and when they may not be. :) Thanks for your super helpful content, even though I'm on the West Coast I continue to get a lot from your channel!

    I will use 10 & 20 gal. size & saving on soil cost by putting Pea gravel or milling in the bottom, then a layer of Mulch on top of that. Soil, compost then another layer of mulch on top.
    I get Milling (tiny tiny rocks) by the 18-wheeler load for $450. The guys that work on building & repairing our roads always have left over milling . When they have enough to fill up an 18- wheeler (roughly 60 yards) they call me & ask if I want to buy it.
    The Mulch, I get for free . A local Tree Remover/Tree Trimmer comes & dumps his Shredded branches, twigs, trucks on my property.
    I have a Subcompact Tractor with Pallet forks. I stick a 2x 4 or any board through the handles of the bags to lift & move them wherever I want.
    The handles on these grow bags are the reason I use them instead of traditional pots. I have a knee that blows up after I lift anything over 15 lbs. I had 1 surgery on it already & will need a full knee replacement soon. As we get older, it gets more important to work smarter, not harder.

    I wish I had seen this type of content last year about this time. I ordered 5 and 7 gallon grow bags and did okay growing cucumber and kajari melons on the east side of our shed where they got some afternoon shade, but the grow bags on the south side of our house got so much sun that even the herbs like basil and thyme did not do well. I purchased the green colored ones thinking that they wouldn't get hot in the sun, but there just simply wasn't enough soil to keep the roots from drying out. I'm using those bags this year to do more temporary starting like my strawberry bare root plants and smaller blackberry plants that don't have a permanent home, yet. The key is afternoon shade for the grow bag if someone can't water twice a day in the heat of summer.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for buying it. You can grow them in 20 gallon pots. The trick with corn is not the growing but the pollinating. Every silk has to be pollinated from the pollen from the corn tassel. So a field of corns blows pollen everywhere and it works. 6 stalks of corn and often the wind blows the pollen away from them.

    overall good video but I have had some different experiences in my garden. I grow exclusively out of grow bags and utilize a drip system with .5GPH drippers in all bags. I have 3 categories of growbags. standalone grow bags are my first category. these are all 15 gallon grow bags and I find them sufficient for anything I'm trying from indeterminate tomatoes, zucchini, eggplant etc... I can put 2 indeterminate tomatoes in a stand alone 15 gallon pot and get great growth and production. I used 12 of these 15 gallon grow bags last year and I'm expanding to 18 this season. the next category are potato bags (for all root veg). these are 10 gallon tall bags that I fold over in half when I begin and as I hill them I unfold them to full height. I have roughly 30 of these. lastly are my trellis grow bags. these are 7 gallon grow bags that I line up on drip lines along a tall trellis for pole beans, cucumbers and such. I find these work well with 1 to 2 plants per bag. this year I will be attempting to grow tromboncino squash and black futsu in the 7 gallon grow bags along the trellis. I know I'm pushing it with the 7 gallon bags for trellising squash as I have had drying failures in 7 gallon bags as stand alone, but I fing that not only do the bags allow roots to grow through the bottom, when lined up in a row touching the roots will also grow into adjacent growbags so I'm hoping the 7 gallons will work for squash in this arrangement. we will see. I don't like to have different size bags in a row because it causes the water to run down the drip line as opposed to dripping off it. I'm in zone 7b as well in MD too. funny story: I once tried okra in 3 gallon pots and they actually grew to about 4-5 feet tall and produced a decent crop, but the taproots were so long the bent at the bottom of the pots. getting the dead ones out was quite the challenge as they sent so many roots through the bags into the soil below. a good point to remember on all these is that I use a drip system on a timer and really slow drippers that will run for 2 hours overnight to get a deep watering down to the root zone in a 14.5 inch tall 15 gallon grow bag.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  3 роки тому +2

    I am looking to order the quart size root pouches from your website, to try instead of the solo cups, for starting tomato seedlings, because solo cups always fall over and make a mess. The one thing I do like about the solo cups is how easy the seedlings slide out of the plastic cup. I imagine it’s not so easy to remove the seedling, especially if it’s been growing in the root pot for some time. How do you remove seedlings? Do the roots just tear? Thanks!!!

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  3 роки тому

      These quarts work well as you can back the in and they press each other and don't fall over like cups. Tip is to run a knife along the inner edge when popping out the root ball. And you can reuse these.

      10 gallon is tough and repotting will be shocking to it, less it is still small. But it would be a watering issue. You'll have 2 water 2-3 a day with big plants and full heat.

    We have a Black Walnut tree that had a banner crop of nuts last fall. However, it is finally encroaching on my nearer raised veggie beds, causing some stunted growth, there.
    This year, I will be growing Alliums ( Onions, garlic, etc) in the affected beds as they are immune and will be growing potatoes, peppers, tomatoes, beans & more in various sized grow bags to foil the tree's juglone effects. The grow bags will be on tiered block & board shelves with watering trays on each shelf. Wish me luck. Any thoughts/advice?

  • @kurtc6372

    I have 7,10 and 15 gallon containers. I was just using 15 gal. figuring I could just put more of something in them. BUT I found that the 15 gallon container takes so much soil, space and is heavy if you have to move them around. So I decided to mix it up this year.
    My real question is that plants have basically two types of root system. One is tap root, which need to grow deep and the other type of root grows out and not so deep so needs a wider container.
    In my 15 gal. container I easily grew two determinant tomatoes and grew one Indeterminate tomatoes. I grew lettuce and spinach in the 15’s. They do make a container that looks like a wider and not round container. Haven’t tried those. They look like your Metal water troughs type containers.

    I live in an apartment and was thinking of acquiring some grow bags to put on my long narrow balcony to grow some crops in. Ideally I can fit bags up to a maximum of 40cm in diameter; otherwise, I won’t be able to go from one side of the balcony to the other.

      Volume for the roots is more important. I think or 10 and 20 gallons are too wide. We might have 5's left which are 4 gallons of volume. They require more watering and tending based on what you grow. Good luck.

    Hi Gary, I haven't commented lately. Hope you are well! I bought 15 gallon containers and have planted my determinate and indeterminate tomatoes in my fabric pots. I did this because last few years I've been planting my indeterminate tomatoes in plastic nursery 15 gallon containers and they grew up to about 10 feet tall or taller. Do you think the 15gallon fabric will be OK? Can I plant my zuchinni seedlings in the 15 gallon fabric? (they are from your store!)
    Oh, also, my Tiny Tim that I bought from you, gave me tomatoes all through the winter. Not many, but they were green through the winter and had little tomatoes on them up until about February. I finally had to take them out so I could use the pot!
    I'm in Oakland CA. I think it's Zone 10a Hardiness. I can never figure these zones out!
    Is it OK to side dress with Tomato Tone when plants are fruiting? Anything else once they start fruiting? Or is it when they are flowering....?
    Thank you for everything. Have a great summer :)
    Debby

    Hi Gary, i am planning on putting my cucumber transplants in 10 gallon fabric containers. I was successful in growing cucumber's last year in approx. a 5-7 gallon plastic container. Would a 10 gallon fabric pot be okay for cucumbers?

      Yep. I decided to present based on ease of watering. If you did well in 7's you can do well in the 10's with cukes. Every gardener and garden differs. I would only go with 1 in the 10 but if you have done more, you got it figured out.

    I bought 15 gallon grow bags for my cucumber and tomatoes. My cucs are vine and and my tomatoes are indeterminate. Is this size ok for these plants? Planning on doing one plant per 15 gallon container.

      That will work. I have grown tomatoes in 5's but its too much work. I now recommend 20 gallon for cukes and indeterminate tomatoes but 15 will work. Just keep an eye on watering.

    Can I put these pots directly on the ground or do they need to be on top of something for the water to drain?

      I grew eggplants in 7 gallon bags last year. They did really well, but Gary is right you have stay on top of watering. I should have watered twice a day during a heatwave that we had, but I kept forgetting the second watering. They never fully recovered after that and started producing smaller eggplants

    What about moisture fluctuation in fabric bags that leads to tomato cracking? Unless you have an irrigation system and keep consistent moisture, your heavy rains will crack all of your tomato no matter how your varieties are “cracking resistant”.
    And watering more than 1 time a day (and sometimes even one time a day) is a luxury a few can afford.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  3 місяці тому

      That is really no different than any container as they loss water with limited root systems. Whatever container you use the moisture is key. Cracks are also more prone to thin skinned varieties. But as you said water more than 1x a day is an issue. Also larger pots are more forgiving.
