hey mike! i'm 41 and lifelong contractor of all sorts. i have gotten into stone work on my personal property, and needed to figure out how to mortar this stuff. being that i am in Lebanon, right down the road from you apparently, i found my critical local advice. i am working with mountain stone from my family's land on the first ridge mountain before blue mountain, little mountain. in addition to the endless supply of that stuff, i also purchased some beautiful white limestone from a barn building demolition in lancaster county. more than half of those blocks were facing pieces, really nice stuff. and i have also been picking stone from the quitipalihila creek- which i think was an old canal- back behind carmeuse lime in anville. its crazy, im picking blue limestone blocks right from the creek.. haha. anyway, you got me going man, and i appreciate it. i would love to come meet you for a coffee sometime! cheers!

In St Louis Mo we use type N for pointing. Most of our bricks are 100+ years old and have a hard face but softer core. It breaks my heart when I see someone who pointed with portland. It pops the brick face off during winter and leaves the soft core. On the old buildings they use O when pointing as the brick was fired some 200 years ago. We can also get lime since many of the hoses have lime plaster on the inside of the brick wall and the inner walls & celling on the oak lath. If you ever want to see some amazing beautiful brick work come to St Louis we have some of the best in the country.

Thanks Mike , you explain things well , a bricklayer once told me that mortar was not to stick the bricks together , but to keep them apart .....what ? ...a garden wall will support itself with gravity , but each brick has different dimensions so a course of mortar is needed to compensate the irregularities to stay with the string line itherwise the wall would be higgly piggly .
Mike, until I found your channel, I would have never attempted any type of masonry. I always felt like it was just too far beyond my grasp of capabilities. Thank you for breaking things down and helping us understand what's going on beneath the surface, no pun intended.
Down here in Mississippi when I do small brick laying jobs I use type S mortar mix for everything. I’ve tried every different kind of combination of Portland, lime and sand and finally just use Sakcrete Type S mortar mix. It’s quick and simple. Downtown here in Meridian, Mississippi we have a lot of old buildings built before 1900 and they used lime cement. And, a lot of those old buildings are not exactly straight, level or plumb. They did use American bond where you have two wythes and every six courses there is a bond.
Good video and informative Mike. Here in the Carolinas we always use Portland cement for the stone and mix half mortar and half Portland for the grouting if using grout bags.

Hello Mike, thank you for these videos! I have driveway issues, porch issues and water seeping through brick foundation when it rains. Sure feels like it's all falling apart. Researching and trying to find out what to do and how to do it was disheartening at times and overwhelming. Thank God I came across your videos because now I know mostly what I need to do. You have given me the confidence and understanding what I need to do. I started resurfacing my porch and steps last weekend - one of the places water gets under my house. I've bought the cement I need to start on the driveway and I'm going to keep watching your videos and get this place fixed up! I have some "patching" for some cinder block that needs facing. After watching this, I got a little confused about the mix you use in "patching". Hi user, most would use firebrick, some use fireclay ,some use portland and sand, I have used 2 sand to one Portland for the joints but fire will eventually eat everything up, it depends on what you are building it for, where, what and why, thanks Mike

I am working on a 500sqft patio. Quartzite 3/8” - 1/2” thick. I have similar weather in northern PA. Using 1 part portland and 2 sand. Per your recommendation. I also followed your suggestion about grouting as I lay the stone down, I am trying to keep it clean, and I wire brushed it the next day however, it looks like there are still some areas that have cement on the stones. Again, the stone is extremely hard. Should I use a diluted Mirotic acid 1:10? What do you suggest? Love you videos!!!!
Hi, usually you will have a film and then after the whole patio is done I use a light acid wash but ,I would do a little sample area first, if the area was sponge well at first cleaning you should have no problem, thanks Mike

I've also watched Mike's Chevy truck ...info.. currently I have a 1995 Chevy truck and am rebuilding about 100% myself am a Retired Machinists and a family owned machine shop since 1975...am a online transmission student at 60 years of age......and going to carb and HEI DISTRIBUTOR AND ROLLER CAM AND VORTEC HEADS OF 1996 TO A 1995....AM AT MY SALVAGE YARD DAILY AT SUMMERTIME....I LOVE TECHNOLOGY....AND HAVE STUDIED for years....I guess Mike was happy with a two barrel carb....I love those older trucks ya bet
Ya can .........put those vortec cam roller camshaft in those older Chevy trucks...and roller lifters...too. I get my roller camshaft at my salvage yard because they roll and wear isn't that much at all so. Run... Diesel 10w 40..oil in those older trucks. Add STP OIL TREATMENT....a day before a oil change... Because oil companies have removed zinc...from motor oil rummer I've heard of.....and Stp and Lucas has zinc in the treatment....but don't leave it in a motor....add before a oil change....but yes vortec heads and vortec roller camshaft will make a older Chevy truck run great. Instructions are on utube..... difficulty isn't all that much. Good to have a older trucks running great as gasoline won't be forever no That's my Portland ...for...now
Vortec camshaft and engines heads begin in 1996.. And they can go on early 1980s 350s I would remove anything above 1998 far as Vortec to older Chevy 350s
Mike, long time viewer but first time commenting. I think i'm not alone when i say we'd love you see you build something entirely old school. from getting the stone from the woods or an abandoned quarry, shaping and facing it, laying it out, everything. a video series of how some workers in the old school would put up a stone building from start to finish. not some huge building but maybe just a corner section of a wall and then some info on how they did the floors and whatnot. we're so lucky in NEPA to have tons of old, load-bearing brick and load-bearing stone buildings. i'd love to see how one of those was actually done from start to finish even on a small scale.

Mike, I have used your portland paint techique on porch, steps and walls. Thank you. Repairing about 14" of exposed concrete the width of my garage floor (about 16'), that is the strip from the driveway to just inside to where the garage door lands because of spalling. Rest of my floor is covered in plastic perforated floor tiles, so don't really care about the concrete under there (sealed it a couple of years ago). I ground it all down smooth, have a few minor cracks and pock marks. I want to seal it with a penetrating masonry sealer, but first, want the concrete to look uniform, so was thinking the portland paint approach, wait 30 days, then apply the sealer. Do you think the portland and water paint will hold up to to the tires when I park my car in the garage?
Hi, it's just a covering, I don't use it for inside garage floors, I might fill the holes and cracks but would usually paint it with a garage floor product, thanks Mike
Great video Mike! Sometime can you talk about previous concrete. I'm thinking about a flagstone patio...and the base will be previous concrete so any water that gets in the joints...it will drain to sub base stone. Thanks

Question for you - planning a DIY pour for a few backyard steps and small pad, is standard quickrete ok or should I be using portland with a 1-2-3 mix?
When I worked for a mason back in the 80s, it seemed as if we might as well have been working 40 or 50 years earlier. Ralph never seemed to take any jobs where his Case 380C backhoe in to dig, so everything was dug by hand by two or three laborers. Mortar was mixed by hand in a big mixing box with the ratio of portland cement to lime to sand to water varying depending on whether we were laying brick, block, or stone. Ralph was given a couple of pallets of premix once by a friend of his who had bought an old lumberyard and was converting it to an outlet store for paper goods. Ralph and his brother Nick didn’t trust the premix so we would add a shovel of portland for each bag.
I totally agree about adding extra portland to the bagged premix.I have also added crush 3/4 stone as it seems they go light on the stone in those premixes.I will never use round stone only the crushed.

Hi Mike, I have old concrete with cracks. I know that anything I do will just be a patch. But some patches are better than others. I hope you make a video about patching cracked concrete. For instance, do you use a diamond saw to widen the crack to get the sand and Portland in? By the way, I've had great success with 1 Portland 2 Sand in Oregon, even though it's warmer than Pennsylvania. Thanks for your great videos, and Happy New Year!
@@MikeHaduck Thanks for your response. The only video I can find is CONCRETE PATCHES (Part 8) Mike Haduck (Sidewalks) It's located in CONCRETE SIDEWALKS playlist. Parts 1 through 7 are missing. The video shows how to repair large voids, not narrow cracks. In Oregon, water runs into cracks and washes the soil out from beneath. Then a huge repair is required. Thanks anyway.

Hi Brenda, it was resurface concrete driveway, but remember it a quick patch and fix before replacing, or just a covering, sometimes it has to be redone every spring, depending on the weather, thanks Mike
Say, Mike: Love your videos!! I just did about 3 layers of Portland Cement "PAINT" or slurry after patching my steps. They look GREAT, but I know in Minnesota Snow/Ice/water will try to penetrate and crack them. I want to put some kind of SEALER (Tung Oil, or commercial product) to make them MORE water resistant, but hear I should wait 30 days first. However, NEXT Tuesday is about the last day this year when I expect over 70 degrees. Can I apply sealer early--will this PAINT be cured enough? Which Sealer for Steps--they are NOT at all slippery, if that makes a difference... Thanks!
@@MikeHaduck Thanks for the super quick reply to my question. The two or 3 coats of "PAINT" (Portland 100 percent type 1/2) are very thin, I would think I could TEST a sealer at the two week point (Cure Time). I put a rubber MAT by the door on the steps and see NO signs of moisture or color change at that spot. Even with Sealer on the FLAT surfaces, I would hope the concrete could STILL find ways to evaporate in other Areas. Maybe the Tung oil will insist on 30 days, as well. Again, Thanks!
So can you use just Portland cement to cover old tile. I used this special cement blend with a brush to adhere to existing old epoxy bath tub. Then I primed and painted it with wall paint. Then I faux painted it to look like marble. It's held up for 12 years. Now, could I just use plain portland cement the same way? The cement blend I used costs $160 for a 40 pound bag. Quite a bit higher than portland cement. Could the cement blend I am using be some sort of plaster? Does that use portland cement, too?
Hi, I only used the Portland paint as an old school depression Era fix to save money. It's only a covering, I would talk with the folks at the paint store, thanks Mike

I have some "patching" for some cinder block that needs facing. After watching this, I got a little confused about the mix you use in "patching". You are using 1 part portland and two parts of sand as the mix. Am I on the right track? Thanks again Mike for all of your knowledge and enjoy your retirement. Hi George, check out my video " foundation repai" part 15, I usually use 1 part s mortar and 2 parts sand in my area I might agg a extra trowel or 2 of Portland thanks Mike

Hi user, most would use firebrick, some use fireclay ,some use portland and sand, I have used 2 sand to one Portland for the joints but fire will eventually eat everything up, it depends on what you are building it for, where, what and why, thanks Mike

I am working on a 500sqft patio. Quartzite 3/8” - 1/2” thick. I have similar weather in northern PA. Using 1 part portland and 2 sand. Per your recommendation. I also followed your suggestion about grouting as I lay the stone down, I am trying to keep it clean, and I wire brushed it the next day however, it looks like there are still some areas that have cement on the stones. Again, the stone is extremely hard. Should I use a diluted Mirotic acid 1:10? What do you suggest?

Hi, usually you will have a film and then after the whole patio is done I use a light acid wash but ,I would do a little sample area first, if the area was sponge well at first cleaning you should have no problem, thanks Mike

I've also watched Mike's Chevy truck ...info.. currently I have a 1995 Chevy truck and am rebuilding about 100% myself am a Retired Machinists and a family owned machine shop since 1975...am a online transmission student at 60 years of age......and going to carb and HEI DISTRIBUTOR AND ROLLER CAM AND VORTEC HEADS OF 1996 TO A 1995....AM AT MY SALVAGE YARD DAILY AT SUMMERTIME....I LOVE TECHNOLOGY....AND HAVE STUDIED for years....I guess Mike was happy with a two barrel carb....I love those older trucks ya bet

Ya can .........put those vortec cam roller camshaft in those older Chevy trucks...and roller lifters...too.
I get my roller camshaft at my salvage yard because they roll and wear isn't that much at all so.
Run... Diesel 10w 40..oil in those older trucks.
Add STP OIL TREATMENT....a day before a oil change...
Because oil companies have removed zinc...from motor oil rummer I've heard of.....and Stp and Lucas has zinc in the treatment....but don't leave it in a motor....add before a oil change....but yes vortec heads and vortec roller camshaft will make a older Chevy truck run great.
Instructions are on utube..... difficulty isn't all that much.
Good to have a older trucks running great as gasoline won't be forever no

I think i'm not alone when i say we'd love you see you build something entirely old school.
from getting the stone from the woods or an abandoned quarry, shaping and facing it, laying it out, everything.
a video series of how some workers in the old school would put up a stone building from start to finish. not some huge building but maybe just a corner section of a wall and then some info on how they did the floors and whatnot.
we're so lucky in NEPA to have tons of old, load-bearing brick and load-bearing stone buildings. i'd love to see how one of those was actually done from start to finish even on a small scale.

Mike, I have used your portland paint techique on porch, steps and walls. Thank you. Repairing about 14" of exposed concrete the width of my garage floor (about 16'), that is the strip from the driveway to just inside to where the garage door lands because of spalling. Rest of my floor is covered in plastic perforated floor tiles, so don't really care about the concrete under there (sealed it a couple of years ago). I ground it all down smooth, have a few minor cracks and pock marks. I want to seal it with a penetrating masonry sealer, but first, want the concrete to look uniform, so was thinking the portland paint approach, wait 30 days, then apply the sealer. Do you think the portland and water paint will hold up to to the tires when I park my car in the garage?
Hi, it's just a covering, I don't use it for inside garage floors, I might fill the holes and cracks but would usually paint it with a garage floor product, thanks Mike

When I worked for a mason back in the 80s, it seemed as if we might as well have been working 40 or 50 years earlier. Ralph never seemed to take any jobs where his Case 380C backhoe in to dig, so everything was dug by hand by two or three laborers. Mortar was mixed by hand in a big mixing box with the ratio of portland cement to lime to sand to water varying depending on whether we were laying brick, block, or stone. Ralph was given a couple of pallets of premix once by a friend of his who had bought an old lumberyard and was converting it to an outlet store for paper goods. Ralph and his brother Nick didn’t trust the premix so we would add a shovel of portland for each bag.

I totally agree about adding extra portland to the bagged premix.I have also added crush 3/4 stone as it seems they go light on the stone in those premixes.I will never use round stone only the crushed.

Hi Mike, I have old concrete with cracks. I know that anything I do will just be a patch. But some patches are better than others. I hope you make a video about patching cracked concrete. For instance, do you use a diamond saw to widen the crack to get the sand and Portland in? By the way, I've had great success with 1 Portland 2 Sand in Oregon, even though it's warmer than Pennsylvania. Thanks for your great videos, and Happy New Year!

The video shows how to repair large voids, not narrow cracks. In Oregon, water runs into cracks and washes the soil out from beneath. Then a huge repair is required. Thanks anyway.

Hi Brenda, it was resurface concrete driveway, but remember it a quick patch and fix before replacing, or just a covering, sometimes it has to be redone every spring, depending on the weather, thanks Mike

Say, Mike: Love your videos!! I just did about 3 layers of Portland Cement "PAINT" or slurry after patching my steps. They look GREAT, but I know in Minnesota Snow/Ice/water will try to penetrate and crack them. I want to put some kind of SEALER (Tung Oil, or commercial product) to make them MORE water resistant, but hear I should wait 30 days first. However, NEXT Tuesday is about the last day this year when I expect over 70 degrees. Can I apply sealer early--will this PAINT be cured enough? Which Sealer for Steps--they are NOT at all slippery, if that makes a difference... Thanks!

@@MikeHaduck Thanks for the super quick reply to my question. The two or 3 coats of "PAINT" (Portland 100 percent type 1/2) are very thin, I would think I could TEST a sealer at the two week point (Cure Time). I put a rubber MAT by the door on the steps and see NO signs of moisture or color change at that spot. Even with Sealer on the FLAT surfaces, I would hope the concrete could STILL find ways to evaporate in other Areas. Maybe the Tung oil will insist on 30 days, as well. Again, Thanks!

So can you use just Portland cement to cover old tile. I used this special cement blend with a brush to adhere to existing old epoxy bath tub. Then I primed and painted it with wall paint. Then I faux painted it to look like marble. It's held up for 12 years. Now, could I just use plain portland cement the same way? The cement blend I used costs $160 for a 40 pound bag. Quite a bit higher than portland cement. Could the cement blend I am using be some sort of plaster? Does that use portland cement, too?
