- If you want cement with larger stone than you can get in quikrete ready cement, then this is what you need. This video will show you all the steps and ratios you need to make cement.

No reason to have dried cement on equipment. Hose it off regularly and a long handle brush really helps. Great video.
I do it the opposite way, for basic concrete mix is 5/1 {3stone 2 sand=5 + one cement}. I first add the water than the cement to make a wet mortar slurry that is well mixed & runny, this way the slurry will mix & bond well when the sand & stone is added. Then just add a little more water to achieve the desired texture of the mix! It's quicker cleaner & you get a perfect mix every time! Have a better one:).
Measure your water,rock,sand and your cement by weight and then add about 90% of the water first and then add your rock,sand and cement letting it mix for a few minutes and then add the remaining water.
As I watched this silly man just randomly run a hose in the mixer, with little respect for the water concrete ratio, I was perplexed. When he later claimed the mix had too much water in it and he had to add further ingredients... I could not stop laughing and wasn't the least bit surprised. Hard to find someone on yt who actually have a clue.

When you mix these materials together, its called CONCRETE, not cement. Otherwise good video.

I started out using this method now I have the largest mixer available was made in Italy is 3 times the amount of this, I go in reverse now. After first mix hose down always and incorporate that into next mix Add 1 bag of 20kg cement and 1 bucket of lime. Dust is far more reduced I use the hose on mist mode spray the dry patch then add 120 kg of sand and aggregate

Is this cheaper than buying premix concrete? Just curious of the pros of mixing your own.
Its a little more expensive to buy everything separate than a sack crete but you can customize the mix to suit your needs better. And the larger stone will make it stronger that sack crete as well

So if I were using crushed concrete only... that could work out be "2.5 buckets" of "crushed concrete" and .5 bucket of Portland...
I had some central American workers build a block retaining wall like that and it seemed to be very strong concrete for the footer and inside the blocks and I can get a yard of crushed concrete here in Florida fairly cheap.
The only thing I would worry about is the stability of the concrete. if it was old and crumbling(probably why its being removed) I would be hesitant of using it because its already failing concrete your mixing in

Not really. Water quantity is critical for the strength of the concrete. Doing it by eye is a big mistake, especially for columns.

I enjoyed the video. I haven't made concrete since I was a kid of 10, (68 years ago), and was wondering what is the largest size of rock you are using in your gravel. I am going to be doing footings and a short pony wall, and just wanted a quick review of the ratio of the materials in the mixture. Thanks
Yea I find clean 2's to be the best stone size. And good for you, kickin butt at your age. I hope I can still be doing the things I love now at that age

Newbe questions: reason(s) why you put stones in the concrete mix? How much difficult will it be to make the concrete smooth on the top when there are these stones in it?
Stones add strength to the mix. When you float it the stone will settle a little brining up "cream" to make a smooth surface
I would think stones would help keep it from cracking
We used to just hit the drum with a hammerThat loosened up anything that stuck on the inside
you know that handle on the left it's not just for dumping the finished product It also helps to alter the angles resulting in a better mix....just sayin

I get it so one 5 gallon bucket of rock 2 5 gal. Buckets of sand and one 6 gallon bucket of Portland cement. Is that correct? And then adjust the water until it gets flowing

Go to aggregate yard get a concrete mix and shovel 5 mix to 1 cement that's all. Ad water as required

Keep the sun off your hose. You don't want to use hot water unless its cold out or you want it to cure faster.
how much do you think hot water affects cure times?
@@appalachiandiy2415 I don't know, but I myself am using ice water for a pour I am doing in 80 degree temps. Longer cure time usually results in a stronger concrete.

@@rich.trails I remember, that when pouring driveways and such on a hot day, we used to cover the concrete with straw or wetted burlap, to keep it from curing too quickly.
I use that cheap painters plastic and cover the whole job for 24hrs to dry slow

What kind of Portland cement do u use
My concrete crumbles! I have have made some test blocks with the 1 2 3 mixture and a test block using high strength redi mix. The 1 2 3 mixture crumbles, even if i let it setup for 3 weeks, where as the redi mix is hard and stable. What am I doing wrong? I used portland cement type ll, all pourpose sand, 3/8" pee gravel.
that is odd. ive had no issues at all with my mix, no deterioration or crumbling
I've had that happen when I didn't use enough water.
Need more cement and water added to your mix.
One idea is cement that has been sitting around will do that. It naturally absorbs moisture, which starts the chemical reaction. The more the tiny parts are already cemented and cured, the weaker it is.
We had bags sitting around in the shed. Came out of the bag as one big piece, but it crumbled up nice and dry powder. The pour looked great, and got hard. But for the next year it just slowly crumbled away.
Someone in the know recognized the issue, so now I know.
Another reason for crumbly finished concrete is not using washed sand and rock. Any "dirt" added to concrete greatly weakens it.

the cement should be added to a mix that is as dry as possible that way it will hydrate and bond many times better and create a much much stronger cured product - in comparison to adding the cement to an already wet mix so as not to create dust...Cement should be added to the sand in small batches, not dumping everything on top all at once.

This seems like it takes a lot more time than just using bags of cement. What is the cost saving of mixing like this?
It actually cost more than just bagged concrete. however you get larger stone in the mix, which is what is used for major construction so I'm thinking its a lot stronger

Wow, That would be a lot of work! unless you have a tiny driveway I would get a cement truck. This is more for sidewalks or steps, small projects like that.

What? Your comment does not make any sense. At 4" thick, a cubic yard of concrete will cover 81 square feet. At one foot thick a yard of concrete will cover 27 square feet.
Approx 80 sq ft at 4 in thick. Meaning 80 sq ft x .33 ft thickness equals approx. 27 cubic ft. You are right there are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard.

Of u get too wet, just add a bit 'o sacrete.
This is a very labor intensive and inefficient way to make concrete. To be more efficient you should add 90% of your water first, then add the dry ingredients. You can add a little water at the end as needed. He ended up adding too much water because his ingredients were all stuck to the back of the machine and he had to add water to get everything to mix in. That is what happens when you add dry ingredients first. Then, because he had too much water he had to add more dry ingredients to the mix to stiffen the slump.
Adding water first does not make it any less labor intensive. In fact it would make more work because now you have to measure out your water. If you want easy, get a metered truck and pay$$$$

I drive a concrete truck and when we load under the plant the water is added first, to keep everything from dry packing in the back of the drum. Adding water first would be best here.

@@jolldoes1515 its very dependent on water content in your sand. if its bone dry it will take a lot more water than if its just been rained on. its kinda an eyeball thing.

Most companies have a minimum that they will bring unless your willing to pay a delivery fee or get a mobile mixer to mix it on the spot. But for $100 something cant really beat sweat equity

It would be faster to use just quikqrete by itself but i like to use the larger stone
