  • The Chanterelle Mushroom, or Cantherellus spp., is one of the worlds most popular mushrooms to forage. With its distinct look and very unique flavor this is a rather easy mushroom to identify in the wild. We'll take a look at the mushrooms identification features, how to harvest it, and we'll look at the toxic look a like known as the Jack O Lantern Mushroom. The Chanterelle is very often found in old growth Oak forests usually in mid to late July, especially after a recent rainfall. This species we look at is a rather large one that, like all Chanterelles, has a feature known as false gills. These structures take the shape of gills but are usually rather shallow and are more like ridges or indentations running on the underside of the cap. The top of the cap is orange to yellowish orange and it will often have wavy margins. The underside of the cap will be whitish yellow then turning into a more orange yellow color towards the base of the stem. Harvesting them couldn't be any easier, as they just pluck from the ground with little effort. This mushroom will usually grow in small to large clusters on the ground but can sometimes be found growing solitary like you would expect from a Morel mushroom.

Just a suggestion Josh, but I think you should collect a Jack O' Lantern mushroom to use as a natural light source(as you probably know the gills glow in the dark). Also, if you don't have it, I'd suggest getting a copy of MUSHROOMS HOW TO IDENTIFY AND GATHER WILD MUSHROOMS AND OTHER FUNGI published by DK Penguin Random House and written by Thomas Laessoe. It's a great field guide.

They are beautiful! I'd love to do more mushroom videos but it's kind of hit and miss on finding any that I know enough about to film

I leave older slug chewed on ones there to spore all over but i will also break it up and throw it around the woods hoping the spores will start in new places

given the 25 oaks in 1.5 acres around me, as long as we actually get rain here in eastern MA it would be fun to try and find them.

Chanterelles grow in my woods. They're late this year and not so plentiful.
