Chanterelle mushrooms compared to toxic look-alike Jack o' Lantern Mushrooms! What you should know!

- I had just completed and episode on bio-luminescent Jack o" Lantern mushrooms and a couple days later I found Smooth Chanterelles! Edible chanterelle mushrooms are highly prized for their flavor and texture while Jack o' Lantern fungi are highly toxic! I compare and contrast edible Cantharellus lateritius with toxic Omphalotus illudens. I was really excited to share and show these species side by side. I also described what a mushroom really is, how it is really only a fruiting body of a large mass of thread-like mycelia hidden under the ground or in the wood of a rotting log. I show how these fungi, both orange and superficially and looking superficially the same differ when turned over. Jack o' lantern mushrooms have distinct gills that go down the stem while Smooth Chanterelles do not have real gills but have ridges instead. (false gills). I conclude with a discussion of never sampling mushrooms on your own. There are many toxic species and some look-alikes. I suggest always having a mushroom expert present if you are going to try to eat wild mushrooms.
You just saved me from cooking what I thought were centrals but now watching your video I'm learning that they look just like Jack-o-lantern fungus.. I found them growing in my yard and from doing central hunting before I'll hunting before obviously it's been too long and I forgot that they have smooth underside and I made a mistake and almost cooked them for dinner so I am so grateful for your video because I don't know what might have happened if me and my family ate them so thank you and I appreciate your videos because they're pretty awesome so keep making more!
Oh my Gosh Ashley.... i dont know what to say. Of course please be careful. I try to say that in every mushroom video I do and I wasnt sure if i need to but this confirms I should keep doing that. I found some jack-o-lanters in my yard this year but I had such trouble identifying them as they are in the rotting phase and of course, "big stinky mushroom" is not the best phrase for a google search. Good think I did my research. Found what I thought was a nice patch of Chanterelle but after watching this I know they are toxic Jack-o-lanterns. I was already suspisious as they were growing on a dead log instead of the ground and I already knew that Chanterelles need symbiotic contact with other plants.

This is great, but would have been even better if you had compared to mid-life, and young, jack-o-lanterns, (not just end-of-life like these), because the younger ones look very different, and much more like Chanterelles. In fact, very young j-o-l look more like honey-mushrooms in general shape, with a beautiful well-defined cap.

Local state park built a frisbee golf course in my mushroom hunting woods last year. I was and still am furious, BUT the disturbance of the ground caused huge flushes of these this year, and I have to say in pretty excited lol

I’ve always wanted to learn more about mushroom hunting.
This is an amazing time to see and find mushrooms in southwest VA... I have come across edible speices including, chicken of the woods, oyster mushroom, the smooth chanterelles of course, a group of coveted black trumpets and little red cinnibars! It si really a new part of my natural history knowledge! 2300 species here...big learning curve for me! so cool...that as one of my first students...when I started teaching... I find you again in my "classroom" ! special and humbling and amazing! Thanks for taking time to comment! Yes...in my area ..early summer tied to warm temp and rains.
