- Thousands of Afghans and foreign nationals have surged on to the tarmac at Kabul airport trying to get a place on a flight out of the country, amid chaotic scenes that unfolded as the Taliban took control of the city. Fearful that the Taliban could reimpose the brutal rule they enforced before 2001, Afghans are seeking ways out of the country, lining up at cash machines to withdraw their life savings.

@Why ? Blame Joe Biden for underestimating the Taliban... Afghan troops needed the Air support provided by the Americans. Since 2016 Afghan forces have done all the groundwork the only support from the west was from Air. And Joe Biden wanted every soldier to pull out. He could have given the Afghan army the drones used by the USA to monitor the Taliban movement. Afghan forces can't defend easily on the ground
To be fair to trump he had to pull out of Afghanistan and Syria because Putin ordered him to, but what’s Biden’s excuse for abandoning allies?

Leadership always lacking from their President; warlords ignored and indifferent as a result; corrupt Afghan Army officers claiming thousands of ghost soldiers' pay; US cut training to 300,000 Afghan militia; mint police who extract money from locals; US leader totally under the illusion of a full strength capable Afghan militia; US President sudden exit from Kabul airport in the dead of night without informing their Afghan partners; Afghan expectancy of long term transition; lack of US ground personnel to direct the recent US air strikes that caused civilian casualties & massive damage in at least one city. Lessons to be learnt, hopefully. Also the poor timing of US sudden exit from Kabul airport, because it was just at the start of the fighting season.

@King of the Saxons No, it really isn't. Freedom is illusory. We have pseudo freedom because we pay taxes to fund a military that prevents other autocratic countries from taking us over. We pay a LOT of money on domestic and foreign security personnel and equipment to maintain freedom. It's illusory because freedom the way you define it is free in the context of what we as a society decide is OK. True freedom is just that...you can do literally whatever you want for any reason at any time. No country has that, and that's not a bad thing. We can simply say we are less restricted than other nations' citizens, and, NO, it is NOT free.

US was not there to defeat the Taliban. The only way Taliban took so much ground is because the Afghan people didn't think it was worth fighting for
low morale is what they have.
I think the Afghan government is corrupt and useless. US have been there for such a long time keeping the Taliban at bay and the moment they leave, Taliban immediately capitulate the country.
There is no unified "Afghan people" - that is the fundamental problem. The different tribes, ethnicities, regions will fight to the death for "their" people, but have zero care for others in the rest of the country.
The mistake of the west was trying to look at Afghanistan as a unified society. It's not.

Their logistical support was provided by contractors. They left when the US and UK forces pulled out. The president has left but a large number of government leaders have remained.

The point is the taliban have taken over so many cities in a short space of time which shows they get free reign of the country. The afghan people are to blame for this happening, whether those are civilians, government or whoever. The country is so divided it needs someone to hold their hand to do things and even at that they collapse as soon as they get left to their own devices.

The soldiers didn't abandon the Afghans, our governments did. We were only there because of the Cold War. The goal of the UN is to maintain international peace but they have shown themselves to be a talking shop once again, just like during the Bosnian War. I feel sorry for the Afghans because it is the incompetence of our world leaders that is to blame.
