    Yes the shot was poor but it obviously wasn't the intended shot choice and you can't be to mad at him, Especially since as soon as Bill realized where his arrow went he quickely went for another arrow and made the shot to make sure the deer didn't suffer anymore.

    • @owenkrieger2185

      it was an intentional shot hit him in the spine to break his spine can’t go anywhere and then quickly put another shot into him to finish him off wouldn’t say the shot was poor at all

    Very poor judgement on shot choice. PERIOD! People are so hung up on giant antlers that they forget the first fundamentals upon learning to be a hunter. Bill is a solid hunter but obviously is too caught up on the pressure of making video it appears. These stupid hunting shows are ruining it for the new generation. It's about the experience. It kills me when I see young hunters who you know are proud of the deer they shot and state, " He's not a monster but," or He may not be the biggest but,"! Be proud, any deer with a bow is a accomplishment, and if you are not in that mind frame you are not entirely hunting. Only old school hunters would know that as to how hunting was back a few decades.

    Seeing some of these comments reminds me not to take for granted the wonderful resource we have in Iowa. I had a huge nontypical buck with wide palmation ( it looked like a small moose) stop directly under my feet in south central iowa a few years ago. It stood there for almost a minute and no matter how I contorted my body I couldn’t get an angle to shoot. I eventually spooked it and it bounded off and I most likely will not get close to another deer like that if I live to be 100. Even so, it’s great to live in an area where you have a chance to see some truly magnificent animals. I never got off a shot, but it was one of the most thrilling moments of my life.

    So lucky that the 1st arrow spined that bruiser buck. An inch or 2 either side and U very may well have lost him to a lower gut shot. Nevertheless, a good quick and humane follow up on a tremendous animal. Great footage.

    Awesome buck and hunt. These posters are tough. Things happen quick, especially during the rut with a once in a lifetime buck, bow in hand. Most shots inside of 10 yards are high percentage and ethical, just because of the distance. At that range, it's hard to miss by more than a couple inches, the deer do not have time to react and the arrow has plenty of energy.

    That's the definition of "no man's land." A shot placement many believe doesn't exist. That's a classic example of sticking an arrow through it. While the shot selection wasn't great, the follow-up shot was quick and the deer expired quickly with the "no track-em." You can't argue with that. Loved how you got a bit of sparring and some grunting on video as well. Heck of a deer. You hunted hard and got him. Congrats.

    I've watched this video a couple times. Im in no way questioning you grunting at the g4 buck. I am curious though if you've considered that maybe you grunting at g4 that the g5 may have heard it and drew him in and possibly hurt you. As aggressive as he was I would say its a real possibilty. Obviously im not questioning the tactic I think anyone would have tried that just an interesting thought to consider that you grunting could have drawn in a more mature more dominant buck. I would say odds of grunting up a buck big and nasty enough to run off the g4 buck is just unbelievably low and you may have done that! Awesome hunt man love the show I've seen every episode. Public land is all relevant.
    A Minnesota boy down there would tear it up .
    Geography is what makes it .
    Come up and hunt the thousands of acres of forests .
    There are no edges .
    There are no fields.
    It is dense forest that truly tests your skills .
    I’d love to come to your neck but it’s not realistic for me .
    Farm land compared to mass expansions of forest.
    It would be a walk in the park for a Minnesota boy to head to Iowa except it’s a license thing that screwes that all up .
    I will hunt Minnesota and call it good .
    It’s a trade of for the huge walleye I catch up here .
    And big bucks ,
    Just not Iowa brutes , so it’s all good .
    Come try it up here some time !!

    This has gotta be the greatest whitetail hunt captured on film. I always go back and watch it from time to time. Bill, do you think double G4 wore his best rack that year?

    • @MidwestWhitetailVideos
      @MidwestWhitetailVideos  5 років тому +1

      Yes, it was the biggest frame that year. When I shot him in 2012 he rough scored about the same, but the inches were spread differently (more mass and more stickers in 2012). That was the coolest deer I will ever hunt. I was really sad after I shot him, if that makes sense. -Bill

    Havent ever hunted but I plan on it next year if I feel confident with it. Can you explain the measuring system?

    • @MidwestWhitetailVideos
      @MidwestWhitetailVideos  5 років тому

      I would recommend not getting too hung up on scoring deer, especially early in your bowhunting. Just shoot whatever is legal and enjoy every second of it! Eventually, if you want to try to increase the challenge, learn to age the bucks you hunt and make age your goal rather than antler size. You will enjoy bowhunting much more if you do that. Antler size is just a bonus on some mature bucks, it should not be the goal. But, to answer your question, the measuring system is based on adding tine lengths, to beam lengths, circumferences between tines around the beam and inside spread. That gets you gross score. Net score requires you to then subtract any abnormal points and subtract differences in tine and beam lengths, etc. Net is system that rewards symmetry but penalizes overall size (in some cases). Again, just forget about score for a while. Good luck. You will love it. -Bill

    Funny how they get down, pull the arrows out of the deer, than film walking up like it was the first time they walked up on him. Great buck; even though I am not a fan of the first shot that was taken.

    • @MidwestWhitetailVideos
      @MidwestWhitetailVideos  5 років тому +2

      Yes, it was a mess in the tree. I had to kneel on the stand so Greg could film over me. I had like three seconds to figure out what to do and I got lucky. It struck me that I could get one-lung and liver on that angle, but the bow hit my stand or my leg (I never knew which) as I pulled down with the appraoching deer and I panicked. -Bill

      @@MidwestWhitetailVideos ive been a student of yours for many,many years and a fan. Anybody who follows Bill Winke knows nothing to do with bow hunting is done half heartedly. I wouldnt say panicked i would say did the best with what you had. Cant always get the textbook shot. A little late but congrats on a stud of a buck. Thanks for sharing the footage over the yrs ive learned alot from watching.

      I know it. He ended up being 4 1/2 when I had the teeth aged. What a giant in another year, but I am not sure I had it in me back then to let him go even if I had known the true age. -Bill
