I’m a foreigner living in Australia and fighting for a citizenship to be able to join the army. I’ll get there!
Good luck Digga...you'll do well.
From the UK, currently applying for Permanent Residency Visa - have the full intention to join when i become eligible to be a citizen.

Hey mate, How'd it go?
How'd it go, Andrew?
How'd it go Andy
Tell us how it went Andrew
I think he died in pooks
Army reservist here, went through Kapooka in 2019. Just a couple of points on what you said about PPE and not getting backsquadded. We did do PPE, it involved wearing full combat armour and helmet and we learnt hand to hand combat/wrestling with a partner. Yes you do get backsquadded, we had a guy in our platoon who kept on f*#&ing up on the range and just generally being unsafe with weapons. He was backsquadded, a week later he NDd (negligent discharge) and fired some rounds through the roof. So yes it does happen, even in reserves. Not to scare anyone here, weapons week is really fun, can be quite stressful but just listen to the instructors and don't F up.
It's all a game, everything is scripted, don't fight the system, just listen, move with a sense of urgency and play the game 😉
This is really helpful for a mum who recently farewelled her son to Defence. He's been at Kapooka for three days now & a very short phone call home tells me he's questioning if it's for him. I so wish he had seen this video before he went. It's so hard to support & encourage when there is no contact. Thank you for putting this together.
@Blake Henderson Hi Blake, he went in via the Gap Year Program (easily googled). The process started in May 2018 for him to join early Jan 2019. He was sent to Sydney for a week before going to Kapooka for 5 weeks. Will go back to Sydney (with a little time at Duntroon in Canberra) until mid year when he will (hopefully) graduate to Officer & be posted to either Brisbane or Townsville. The Gap Year Program is condensed & in my opinion a great way to start off. Good luck.
I march out tomorrow tell him to keep pushing it gets way better trust me
@@thebantabrigade9130 Well done & congratulations. March Out is a very big deal. You must be so proud. Two weeks in & I can confirm that he's doing really well now, & taking it all in stride. A very relieved mum to know he's got this.
Blake Henderson , my youngest lad has just received his entry date and he first applied while still in grade 12 I think it’s been around 6 months in saying that he’s not going infantry. My eldest lad took over 9 months but had some warts he had to get frozen off for his medical and that held him back around13 weeks for healing
@@happyfeet203cpwe hi Patrice, how's your son liking it now?
Probably the best words out of the entire video was: "Those instructors have been given a very tough task of turning a civilian into a soldier". Never though about it that way. Really does put the entire thing into perspective.
I just got back from Kapooka, I’ve been watching this series on repeat for 3 years, and it’s incredibly accurate (especially the first week part)! Hated Kapooka while I was there, but now I’m back, I kind of miss it!
Thanks for all the tips and secrets, wouldn’t have gotten through without it!

Arrived on Melbourne Cup Day 2001 at Midnight. Didn’t sleep a wink all night. Hardest thing I have ever completed but also the best. 18 Years service and counting.
Went through in 72 you pretty well summed it up, we had instructors who had toured Vietnam they would sit us on a log after a run & tell us in no uncertain terms what to do over there, I am sure some boarded on insanity.
Harry you have no idea how happy I am to have your How to survive Kapooka Series back. Keep it coming
Cheers man! I will do! Thanks for the support :)
Hopefully going in soon but the best tip I’ve been told is that “it’s been done before and it’s not impossible”.
You can’t fail really, they know your capable due to the iq and fitness tests ect. It just takes willpower. For me kapooka was far harder then IT because you had more freedom and everything was less chaotic
i love the army because they protect their families their lives and their country

I can't wait for this challenge. I'm there to push to end with all of my team mates.
Great video👍🏻 I head down for basic on the 2nd of November, proper helpful insight into what to expect
im glad you're back mate
As am I!
This is very helpful, thank you.
I went through in 1973 and it hasn't changed regarding the ideas and concepts being described by this young man. Everything he says is right. The 1 RTB experience is both hard and enjoyable. It's all about the recruits attitude.
Master Edward Brian Scott of TaeKwon-Do I have done plenty of training courses including the Army Reserves Training, but failed the course and left I was subjected to bullying and barstardisation from other members in my platoon, but I am so proud of all the recruits that complete the Australian Army courses, buddy you explain this course so well.
I was conscripted in '71 became 'Outstanding Soldier of the Platoon', much to my surprise, as well as right marker. My platoon corporal had seen 3 tours in Vietnam as a pioneer scout, he was hard, very rarely smiled, and an excellent soldier, there were no 'excuses'. We were talking one day toward the end of my time there, he imparted some extra tips for surviving during these talks we had. He said that as I had won the trophy I may not realise it could mean I wind up doing what he did as pioneer scout. That bothered me a bit, then I asked him why he didn't go back, he said he could do more good teaching as many of us to come back than going over again. Much respect to you "Blue", and as he said not because of his red hair. And yes he could .....blue.
Tips to survive: Do your best, have a go, try hard, be honest with yourself, learn and revise, practise the things you can in you own time it will pay off, do yourself and the Army proud. Never complain, fall or knocked down get back up immediately, never slack off, Don't be caught with a dirty weapon, never drop your weapon, if you do then hit the ground before it does. Good Luck and be your best. It will change you forever. Never ever ever give up.
Much appreciated Harry, great video!
Cheers :)

great content mate, really helped out alot
Great information and advice much appreciated
Well spoken 👏 most of the way through the enlistment process. Fckn pumped 🔥
Hahahaha good stuff chocko, I was full time, Charlie Coy 24 platoon. Then I got to Singleton and was told to forget everything Kapooka and time to learn how to truly soldier. Anyone looking go Infantry with boots on the ground as a door kicker should take note. Kapooka is just the start, if you are going to a combat regiment, prepare for the big pineapple!
I wish I could have been 24 platoon. I was 26 up on the top floor. Always so annoying to carry everything up and down those stairs.
Chris Meredith hahahaha fuck mate you have my sympathies, we were at the bottom, I feel your pain. But once you are done with basic it only gets harder.
Chris Meredith we had one bloke who was held back from 23 platoon because he was pointing his weapon at people from his window, then he failed our platoon from dropping into a pit and breaking his leg.
Thanks ,I picked up some very helpful tips 👍🏻
Great video mate!

Just keep your knowledge a secret 😊 I was in Cadets too 15 years ago
i wanna be a part of the aviation corps when i'm older. still gotta do HSC so it's gonna take a while. thanks for this mate

And my goal in life is to become a Sniper for the army and the series of videos are very handy for me thanks mate.
A BIG THANK YOU .
I have never been so excited for kapooka tbh!
I tried to join the army the moment I was of age, passed every test got right to the end just before the fitness test, but they told me that first and foremost I need life experience, it’s now 7 years later and I can say that I will be re applying with some life experience under my belt ready to actually join this time

hey mate wondering what the rules were on smoking at kapooka are you allowed to at all or?
Liam Schofield depends on your staff. for the first few weeks you're only allowed to smoke at meal timings after that it gets a little more relaxed but you'll still have to ask permission and they can make it hard for you if you mess up
I find this interesting. I did Kapooka in early 1975 and ended up doing a career of 21 years and ended as a WO1 in a Captain slot for the final 5 years. I did not find Kapooka that bad, the food was good and the training interesting. I did three years of playing football before joining and spent a lot of time spearfishing at Bass point so I was fit.. At one point a CPL was yelling at me and he stopped and said "why am I not intimidating you." , Oh I said, you have not met my dad. What does that mean he said. I replied "My dad spend 12 years in the British army and part of that was waiting on the beach at Dunkirk. I'm sorry corporal you just dont cut it. The corporal smiled and left me alone. At the marchout all the platoon NCOs all shook my Dads hand. He was a hard man but I kind of miss him.
That pedagogy helped you mate. Corporal must be with full of awe.
Can’t wait to join
Good job, Digger !!
You will miss parts of your civilian life, don't think too much about this. Humans are wired for path of least resistance and when under pressure will look for a way out. awesome cheers mate. im joing army reserves infantry. Enlistment date is 21st of May
Well done, this is all good advice. I was at Kapooka in July 1992, and we were the first ARES Soldiers to be trained at Kapooka. I would say, don't get noticed and don't take anything personally. Also, some things that seem bad and humiliating are, on the surface, not. We had a webbing inspection and those that had failed to empty their canteens had to empty them over their heads. You get wet in a shower so suck it up. Also, don't expect praise. During a drill exercise, my number came up, I handed my weapon to the man next to me, marched to the front of the parade ground to be told by the Platoon Seargent that I had done well. All fluffed up I marched back to my position and took back my SLR. Behind me I heard the voice of my section corporal, "That was shit, just wait until we get back to the lines". To be honest, get through Kapooka and you will look upon it as the best days of your life. The dry shave incedent is the best story.
great vid. i loved every minute of kapooka, from day 1 i felt like i was home. i did the FT course but left during my last week due to medical reasons, ill be going back next year as a choco though. if anyone wants any updated info feel free to message me :)

How often do you get your phone at Kapooka to talk to family?
Bardia Barracks 2 trg group, was a little easier than 1 rtb. 14 days and then 9 days at 2 div battle school Ingleburn. With nearly a week in the field. Nearly all Diggers went straight into 1983 recruit trg, rather then 1 year with a Unit learning basics, then to 14 + 9 days. Thanks for your talk. It’s well needed good warning.

I am 36 know and still have the drive to join the military to change my life and my family's for the better as a reservist going full-time will be hard on the family life but has lots of benefits not sore if you have any insight on older applicants with family's joining. Hey so i wanna join the adf as a reserve next year, and am already preparing as in fitness and stuff but i also want to do a self evaluation at the end of 2021 (1 year into being a reserve) and question myself "do i want to swap to full time?" My point is do i need to redo my recruitment training in kapooka if i want to swap into fulltime?
you should apply for the gap year program. Yeah its full time but its only for a year.
Considering joining the ADF. So I want to be prepared for what I'm up against. Thanks.
Kapooka is mental an physical, think before you speak, listen an don't think you know it all, be humble an stay focused, an it's easy.
Don't let them break you, ignore the yelling!
From week 4 to 5 it gets easier

What is your job role? After kapooka ?
So what happens at kapooka on an average day, like what would the schedule look like roughly?
I am about to have my YOU session in 3 days and I want to become a fitter armament. How long will it take for me to finally go to kapooka
That could be upto 2 years wait. Could be as little as a couple of months, depends on the need.
Hey mate, I’m 16 halfway through year 11 and plan on applying for ADF soon can go as soon as finish HSC, what exercises do u think would be best for training as an average person
Hahaha I never thought it was a great place!
When I get my citizenship in 2 years I have in mind to join the army and get an sponsorship to study medicine and be an officer doctor. I don't know how is the military life in Australia, any tips?
The Australian military is very reflective of society. There's no racism, no sexism, no bullshit. Every Australian soldier is dedicated to every other Australian soldier. The training isn't hard, we've been perfecting it for >100 yrs. Study tropical medicine, the Army specialises in jungle warfare. The recruitment process can be long. Start talking to a Recruiter today.
Can you make a video about what the reserves are like
Hi, what is "choko"?
Also how to react if I miss or didn't hear what the drill instructor (if that's what you call them) tell me to do? Like some people have problem with others deep accent or some just literally didn't understand the instructions.
A Choco is a nick name for a Australian Army Reserve Soldier, it comes from WW2 when the militsia ( forerunner of the Reserve s) were sent to defend Australia in New Guinea against the Japanese ie Choco = Chocolate Soldier referring to erroneous view that they would simply melt when confronted with the enemy, in fact the opposite happened!
im guessing maybe just copy what everyone else is doing?
Hey mate thanks heaps for this. I have a question, if I get into that army as a life support fitter for instance I was wondering what Evey day life is like. I would probably be at enoggera in Brisbane in housing. But what are hours like and how much time do you have at home and stuff. Like after work can I go out and do things or is it work, eat, sleep and repeat? And how many days do you work and stuff like that (once military and employment training is done and I am employed)
It would just be like a regular job, although I think you do have to live on base for a year or 18 months, not quite sure. But yes, like a 9 - 5 but bear in mind you will be deployed, put on exercises, etc.
The HowTo Life do you know Thomas conradt

Skulltex Gaming you will wake up at 0600 every morning and will sleep at 2200
Looking to join but nervous about the instability of not knowing where I will be living and how long it will be without seeing my family! It seems like there is no flexibility and once you are in the army they own you, can anyone tell me I have been misinformed?! I feel like I need more information from people who have actually joined and not just a recruiter who puts a positive spin on it. Is it actually worth giving up minimum four years of my life?
Is there any reason why the recruits march out with different uniforms on ?
Do You actually get to pick what Corps you go to? And if so how many soldiers actually get allocated to their chosen Corps?
Brett Hestelow whatever corps you go pick is the one you go to the only things you can’t control are things like what battalion, company, platoon, section those things

Eh Magz, Don,t hurt yourself, Let Kapooka do its job,
I cant decide if I should take the leap or not! Ive been thinking about it for 2.5 years
That's a long time mate, you may have some good reasons why you haven't done it yet but I'm pretty sure regretting not trying is much worse then doing it an hating it. Reserves don't have minimum service but you still should be committed.
The next video I make will discuss this in a little bit of detail. If you feel like you NEED to do it, don't. If you WANT to do it, by all means enlist!
Just wondering if anyone knows what happens at kapooka or wagga wagga during ANZAC day?
Yeh, dunno if you still need it, but I was at Kapooka last year during ANZAC day, and we just had to wake up extra early and perform a dawn service with the seccos. The seccos also obvs get a lot more sentimental too, so you don't wanna make any mistakes during those times
How does the self discipline work regarding the bathroom, do you learn to schedule your dumps?
You learn to squeeze them out as quick as you can!!!! Lights out theres a rush for the shitters! ))
Anyone going doing to do their PRTC on the 9th of November?
What’s the difference between reserve and full times and salary difference and any ocmbat difference or weaponry or equipment difference
All the same equipment mate. As for combat, you would be better of popping over to In The Trenches With Cas and asking that question. From my understanding he has deployed before with both us choccos and regs.
Full time members work 5 day weeks (most of the time) but are always on call to be on duty or for other tasking.
Choccos parade (for most) every Tuesday with some weekend parading. With the exception of times of war, rendering full time service/deployments/exercises are completely voluntary. There is however an expectation that you will put in some effort to attending these, and Tuesday parading shouldnt be missed.
As far as pay goes, choccos receive tax free pay with has different pay grades dependent on rank/corps. Regs do not receive tax free pay except if on deployment.
Hope that helps
The second im old enough im going
Do the army reservists do the same March out as the regs?
Can someone please tell me how long the recruitment process takes?
Dylan, the recruitment process can take anywhere upto 2 years or as little as a few months. Just depends on the chosen Corps as well as the need.
What is reserves like?
Do u guys do sit down tests like on English and maths?? Bc I’m worried about that
No lessons are specific to the Role. You should already have the english and maths knowledge before going into recruitment.
