Brice Defiant 63437 Pickup Comparison - Stock vs. Nordstrand Big Blades

- A somewhat rambling and poorly edited comparison between the stock Cephas humbuckers that came with my Brice Defiant 63437 and the new Nordstrand Big Blade (warm and wooly) single-coils. The bass has an Audere 4-band preamp, and all clips were recorded straight from my Helix LT into Reaper.
Hey mate. Good first video - next time, a script might help a touch to be more concise, and some riffs/runs to play prepared in advance. It would also be really helpful to edit the clip to have a direct A/B between the sounds instead of having them a few minutes apart, because the listener's ear has time to adjust and 'forget' the first sample by the time you hear the Nordstrands.
I love the sound
Awesome video. Was wondering how you ordered this? From Rondo? I’m looking for the 5 string version similar to this. the “Brice Defiant 53437 RN Nat Bubinga.” Really dig the sound of yours, and sounds incredible after the pickup switch. Glad to see this is a somewhat recent video. Hoping to find one!
Yeah, I ordered directly from Rondo. I checked their new items page every day for probably six months before it popped up. I'm not sure why, but they don't get many of them in.
The original pickup sounds good actually but the Nordstrands are the level up.
i've been thinking about dropping a trio of nords in my Dingwall D-bird, any advice for the best set to go in a 4 string passive bass tuned to drop-C ? subb'd n waitin' for more
It depends on what you're looking for, but their blade pickups are great for fanned fret basses because they are more forgiving of string spacing. I really only have experience with the Big Blades and the Big Singles. The Blades are a bit smoother and more modern sounding than the singles, which are basically just straight rip-your-head-off growl all the time. I would contact Nordstrand customer service and see what they recommend.
@@zebuloncarpenter58 awwwww rip-your-head-off growl do be sounding pretty good tho
Are these humbucking pickups or single coils? I was thinking of taking a used Ibanez EHB 1505, but I'm not convinced of the Nordstrand Big Splits
These are single coils, but they are fairly quiet. The Big Splits are totally different pickups. Those are hum canceling.
Hey man i cant find this bass anywhere. Rondo only have the 53437 at the moment they dont have the 6 string version. Where did you get this?
They are only available through Rondo, and they are very unusual to find. I checked the "new items" page every day for at least six months before they posted this one. I'm sure you could email them to find out if they'll be getting any in stock soon.
@@zebuloncarpenter58 You are right!! I ordered the Defiant 5 around this time last year and Ive only seen it available one other time since then and it was only on the site a week before they sold out of them. They do very small batches(like 25) at a time from what they told me when i ordered mine.
What string spacing did you select when ordering your Nords? Ive been looking at the ones you got in C&C or maybe the big splits(have a friend that swears by them).
Do you wish you had got the clean and clear version of these????
Not really. I like stainless steel strings and these work really well with them.
Hey! I've been keeping an eye out for this bass to be available again on rondo. Did you ever change out the pickups? They don't sound that bad but I'm sure the Dynamics are lacking when you plug into an amp.
I really like the 6-string model but I've only seen the five-string model available sporadically in the last few months.
Lol, watch the whole video, bud. I do a comparison with the stock pickups with Nordstrand Big Blades. Unfortunately, Rondo almost never gets these basses in, and I've been told that they aren't expecting any this year.
@@zebuloncarpenter58 whoops my bad! Ill def watch the whole thing. How was the fret job on it? Did it need any frets ground/leveled? At some point when they get this bass in ill be looking to grab.
@@Bassguitarist1985 The frets seem pretty solid. No issues from me, but I also tend to set my action a bit higher than a lot of people because I play really hard.
@@zebuloncarpenter58 cool. I'm the opposite, lowest action possible ha! The low B string, im sure tension wise feels amazing. With the new pups and good strings, would you say the clarity is on par with getting that good overdrive tone of Adam Getgoods tone? Listen to Periphery's Absolomb, the intro bass part im talking about.
Thanks for the feedback.
@@Bassguitarist1985 I wouldn't really compare the tone to a Dingwall. It is noticeably darker and thicker sounding, with more sustain and a bit less attack. I can definitely get some really gnarly drive sounds, but Sheldon Dingwall does some kind of voodoo with his basses.
How heavy is the bass?
5-string version is about 9 pounds, this one a bit of heavier, i guess
Do you still happen to have this bass?
I do.
useless comparison. better less talktalk and more preparation and time into playing, bud
don't waste your time watching this video.
