The outstanding feature is that every tone I heard was usable! There are certain combinations of coil switching which produce more variance than others however if it's variance that you are after, perhaps filters (Alembic, John East etc.) may be the way to go.
Thanks for a great, objective demo. I like this pickup a lot. I am looking very closely at this for a new single pickup custom build 5 string with John East 2 band preamp. The guys at Nordstrand are also recommending their Zen Blade. Any comparison thoughts?
I haven't played the Zen blade so can't really compare. The Nordstrand guys are great though, so no hesitation going with what they recommend. I will say that this bass just keeps sounding better, and I'm liking the tapped sounds quite a bit, which is a change for me as I'm not really a JJ kinda guy. But both coils on the bridge is a go-to tone as well.
thanks - yes, bridge is 60's position, but for me the secret sauce is the neck pickup is close to Smith position as opposed to a typical dual pickup bass (a bit closer to the bridge). I do find I use the bridge pickup a lot for chord/solo lines, and having the choice of single coil, parallel, and series is huge.
@@ToddRichmond yes!!!! the neck pickup is the money for me, so that neck pup is also same as Anthony Jackson position right? which I believe is also the P bass position
which coils are being activated on each pickup when you go to single coil mode? This bass has to be one of the nicest sounding basses I've ever heard. thanks for the run down!
parallel. Interesting thought to make them also series/parallel switchable but I'm finding I'm not missing any "fatness" which is usually why you'd go series.
I think you mention in the video but want to confirm, all of these tones are in passive mode, correct? Also, do you find the BigRigs provide enough low end (80-150 range) while passive?
MascisMan1 iirc those are active but flat onboard eq. I rarely run passive but depending on what I’m going for and pickup pan I sometimes add a bit either onboard (80hz or so) on on the amp (100hz give or take).
Nordstrand built the pickups, Fodera built the bass and wired everything up. Having the 3-position switches for coil tapping gives a lot of options. Lately I've been using single coil a bit more.
@@ToddRichmond That is so cool, I've sent my bass back to Fodera once for pickup replacement. I may do it once again after hearing your bass. I play a AJ 6
I've tried a number of F basses - they are great instruments. I almost bought an AC fretless some years back, that was my favorite of George's instruments.

Really love series bridge pickup sound!! Great bass!! Tnx for demo!
Wow so many great sounding options
Fantastic!!! Series bridge is crazy. Thank You!!!
best for prog, metal and any modern chugs
Big Rigs are perhaps the best bass pickups to let the instrument fully breath through.

Amazing bass , I keep coming back to this video !!!!! Love it, is that bridge pickup in 60's ?

When both pickups are in single coil mode is it hum canceling like jazz pickups?
You lucky lucky lucky bastard
totally agree - added bonus, my wife doesn't freak out when I get something like this.
It sounds just like any other bass but very expensive!

I believe it is the outer coils. That would have been another interesting switching capability but at some point it is too many switches.
Are the pickups wired series or parallel ? I mean relative to each other, not the wiring of coils in the individual pickups.
parallel. Interesting thought to make them also series/parallel switchable but I'm finding I'm not missing any "fatness" which is usually why you'd go series.
@@ToddRichmond they sound surprisingly full in parallel, without any frequency cancellation typical to this mode.

I still prefer the Duncans
I Love the way this bass sounds, who wired the pickups?

Is this the alnico 3 or 5 version? Amazing sound
these are 5 - a bit more grind going on
@@ToddRichmond sounds stunning. Thank you !
what king of preamp is on board?
Pope/Fodera preamp
You’ve tried the Fbass Deluxe???
