No, to a Vader series. No, to anything centered around a legacy character.
Speaking of The Last Jedi, did you notice the look of surprise and shock on Rey’s face when she lifted the boulders?
It was because Luke Skywalker gave her a major assist before he passed. Being connected with Luke is how Rey felt Luke’s passing.

Kristian, I totally agree with you about Lucasfilm adapting the books. At Celebration this year, I had a conversation with Claudia and asked her if she ever discussed adapting her work into live action and she told me that they just aren’t in communication with that side of Lucasfilm… which is a damn shame because there are multiple books that would make great TV series/films.

I would looooove a show with Quinlin. To see any flashbacks of Asajj in Dark Deciple would be Amazing! It would also be a cool way to explore the the path from Kenobi and some more of the surviving Jedi.

Another comment, in regards, to what Steph said about, “why villains are interesting to her:
I agree-it’s all about developing them properly. When Steph was making this point, all I could think about, was The Kingpin in Netflix’s Daredevil.
That had ALL the stuff Steph brought up! We spend time with him, see his day to day, see flashbacks to his childhood. We understand this character at the deepest most fundamental parts of who his is, what he wants, and why he is as evil. It’s so compelling you find yourself almost rooting for this guy!
Anyway, ALL of these thoughts, and I’m only halfway through the video! Thank you guys so much for doing this amazing show!

I think you could do bane by showing his past. Making you feel sorry for him with how hard is life is. Then lose that sympathy when he starts murdering people.

@@Thisisgood99 I love that take. But, I don’t know what kind of shift has to happen in our culture-for studios to be more okay with leaving a project with a villain.
That’s not just a Star Wars problem-that’s every major studio. But, I’m confident it will happen-maybe inside this decade! I’m worried that they will alter things for the worst but, it will still be cool.

As mush as I love Vader I don’t think he should have a series, I feel like it would take away some of the allure of the character. Vader should be used as a tool and sparingly. You know when Vader shows up shits about to go down and him having a series focused solely on him takes away from what he is imo. Now would I watch it HELL YES.

If you’re a true Star Wars fan, you like why you like, and you don’t like the stuff you dislike and you respect people who like the stuff you dislike because we all see things “from a certain point of view” as Obi-Wan would say. I’ll never understand why some fans are such bullies about liking certain Star Wars films/tv, etc. that they don’t like, I love the discourse that you and Steph and Mike bring to this show. I feel like you guys have created a great space for Star Wars fans on your show, at least for me at any rate. #SithCouncilRules

The reason for the "toxicity" is when someone voices a negative opinion on Disney era Star Wars, they attacked and dismissed as being toxic, and hating everything (despite there being no backlash to TCW S7 and Mando).
And then they are further dismissed by lazy arguments tearing down the OT/PT as an excuse. And then there are clickbait, gaslighting and antagonistic videos and articles like; 'why you're wrong about the TLJ' or 'TROS was the fans' fault for wanting fan service' etc.
Not to mention the whole gatekeeping with 'a real fan says/does X'
LF brought this on themselves, just like in other franchises attacking their fans to dismiss criticism. As soon as they allow a director to insult fans, or insult/label them on social media, they enable frustrated fans to shout at people that don't agree with them.

I definitely don’t need a Vader series, but there are some interesting things you could do with it. What I think would be cool is a 5-6 non linear episode series. Each episode is a different day/time period in Vader’s life. Show some stuff immediately after revenge of the Sith, some stuff between the events of the Original Trilogy, and some stuff from the books (Lords of the Sith, etc) Show more stuff with Tarkin and the Emperor and even some flashbacks to when he was still Anakin. I think that would be a really enjoyable watch.

In my opinion, I think Qui Gon should of appeared after obi wan has defeated vader, and as Obi Wan thinks about finishing him off... Qui Gon appears to tell him that he still is "the chosen one", will still bring balance to the force etc and that obi wan shouldn't finish him off.

Its interesting that every in live action appearance of Vader,
    He’s either cutting someone down,
Or at least choking them out.
Every film and series, with the exception of Return of the Jedi.
Aside from toying with Luke during their duel,
He doesn’t hurt a single person.
Vader is at his most vulnerable and arguably compassionate, shown at several moments to be unsure of himself.
With all the movies and books we’ve had of Vader in his prime,
I personally think the months between Empire and Jedi are would be the most interesting period to explore.
Coming to terms with Luke being alive, Palpatine lying to him, and that he’s wasted 20 years of his life to being a miserable servant.
I’d love a series to bridge that gap, showing us Vader in his final days.
If it’s possible he did some good deeds offscreen, maybe even communicating with Ahsoka for guidance.

Should there be a Darth Vader series? I say no. He’s a great villain but I can’t help but think he’s very narrow and somewhat of a cliche. I would rather see a Kal Cestis series for sure. Maybe if Vader makes the occasional appearance that could be cool. And personally what I’d like to see most is a series on the Jedi in their prime. Maybe a young Mace Windu series or Old Republic series sounds sick.

39 minutes into the video, and I HAD to pause it! Both of you have made such interesting points so far!
To Steph, MAN do I feel you on the conversations-I want more! I remember seeing the Owen clip and thinking, “oh good! They’re only showing a little bit of the conversation-there’s so much juice there I bet it’s like a good 5-6 min interaction! Or, that we have many scenes of them going back and forth”-NOPE. 🤦🏽‍♂️
To Harloff, I feel there’s so much that we could unpack about, saying Disney-when we should say Lucasfilm.
For me, this started, after T.L.J.
Once it was clear we didn’t have a plan.
BEFORE that, I remember Most people were putting ALL the praise and shine on Disney.
Disney bought Star Wars! They’re going to put all their resources behind new movies, shows, and merchandise!
Disney SAVED ST. (The headlines Never said Lucasfilm.)
Even when production info started coming out about ep.7 : “Disney hires JJ”, “Disney hires Larry K”, “Disney is set too…”
But, when T.L.J. happened, I couldn’t believe that it wasn’t the same/similar to Marvel!
There’s a bigger conversation here, about the way normal people perceive how these companies work, Vs the real of how they operate. My thinking was admittedly simple:
Disney, as a parent company, only cares about making as much money as possible-while protecting their brand.
Marvel, a company UNDER Disney, has proven that you will make MORE money over a longer period of time if a story starts off small, and continues to build and build through more content. It created investment in the brand, the opportunity to expand, thus make MORE money.
Even if the creative wasn’t handled by DISNEY they were the ones, in the end who would have all the metrics, all the numbers, the market data, even people who watch social media to try to gauge what the audience is thinking and saying. (I feel like these are safe assumptions on how a huge conglomerate like Disney would operate.) All that being said, I couldn’t imagine, or understand why they wouldn’t have tried to do the SAME thing with Lucasfilm. Why wasn’t the companies goal forced to line up with Marvel’s goals. I thought the parent studio, and especially the board/CEO, would be passing notes or having meetings, along the lines of: make a shared universe, have crossovers, he’ll even post credit scenes in the same style. Why not!? Hollywood’s whole M.O. is to find something that makes money, and do it again and again until it doesn’t. Also I though it was a safe assumption that a HUGE company like Disney would micromanage every company and project under them, in order to make sure it makes the most money.)
ANYWAY, all that to say, after I couldn’t BELIEVE there wasn’t this type of plan or vision or that the company just doesn’t work the way I thought. I started to think: what if Marvel was a fluke. Because that’s how BAD this was. So then if everything that’s good -is not because of them- than by the same token everything everything that’s bad is their fault. (Dealing in absolutes which human reasoning does all the time!)
As far as why not say Lucasfilm when things are good. That has to do with the way that company has presented itself for the last ten years: a CEO who seems EXTREMELY out of touch, who has been caught in lie, after lie, all the production problems, all the problems with their public relations, even the WAY they handled announcements in the press. It was all always sloppy, mistake after mistake, L after L. When a company does this for THIS long-everyone perceives them as incompetent which means that anything GOOD that happens or is made is a fluke, or someone else, like one or a few people made it good. In spite of Lucasfilm or Disney. Like with the Mando conversation. The narrative is: “it’s only good because of Jon and Dave BECAUSE the CEO of the company has made nothing but one public mistake after another.
But, I also think that, many people try to think about their entertainment in terms of: who’s at the top, as in, which company because a lot of these companies are monopoly now. I know there’s always a bigger fish-if we want to stick with Star Wars here. The internet making much of how these companies supposedly work, public and easy to access. They’re just SO many factors as to why someone might not acknowledge the studio and just put everything on the biggest company in that chain!
My overall point is that: because of all of these sociological factors, many people might not even notice they’re saying Disney for all the Bad, and not even Lucasfilm but, individual names inside of the company for the good.
It’s one of those, “you didn’t notice it but, your brain did” things.

17:30 It was Tarkin who condemned Alderan to its fate. I know Vader caused a lot of destruction but wouldn't the Empire (and The Emperor in particular) have caused it with or without Vader anyway?? Let's face it - if Obiwan killed Vader there and then, Palps wulda just took another apprentice and the same destruction would've ensued! And as Yoda told Obi - "To defeat this Emporer...strong enough you are not"
He just couldnt bring himself to finish his friend on Mustafar and he couldnt do it here. End of the day it was the will of the force, as we all know that Anakin was indeed the chosen one to bring balance.

Great show as always. A lot of good points made. I enjoyed the first three elf Kenobi and for me it really fell off a cliff. Generally my issue with this era of Star Wars is putting it simply: too much information. Steph said it, the mystery is or used to be almost sacred in a galaxy far, far away. And I get this is a business investment but and I’ve said this on my own channel but Lucasfilm is stuck in this small box of the OT and they’re afraid to branch out. Starting to at least in the vid game corner of the fan base. KOTOR remake. Star Wars Eclipse. Mandalorian is a step in the right direction but I still believe there needs to be more expansion otherwise it won’t take another “Last Jedi” to divide the fan base. People will leave because they’re bored. And for SW I think that’s just as bad as losing money. Personally I’m going to wait for Ashoka to drop. Outside of that I’ll stick with Fallen Order and other EU content. To me Lucasfilm always takes two steps forward (Mando) and five steps back. And more people will catch onto this pattern unless something changes behind the scenes. ✌️

I don’t want them to do a Vader series unfortunately, while obi wan was being developed (even after the leaks dropped) I was thinking “it’s obi wan, they can’t fuck it up..” having an Obi Wan show that doesn’t absolutely slap literally didn’t seem possible to me.. I have no more faith in Disney now.. if they don’t have enough respect for Star Wars to do kenobi justice they will be willing to hand in a low effort offering for any concept, any character, they are willing to damage any piece of canon and cut corners in their storytelling no matter how important that story is.. they have completely lost my faith, I don’t want them to denigrate Vader, he’s too important of a character.. Andor seems cool mostly because of the writers, they are actual writers with actual accolades and credits under their belt. Anything Dave does I will look forward to, John is on thin ice for me personally after Boba.. Star Wars just has so much potential for amazing storytelling, action, esthetic and themes, if only they would step it up in just about every way we could have groundbreaking entertainment outside of The Mandalorian.. stories focusing more on the jedi vs sith and the lore overall would be so amazing, a jedi journeying around the galaxy getting into altercations with the sith and discovering the esoteric nature of the force and wrestling with the dark side in his or her self.. you could tell multiple stories just based off that premise alone, like a mandalorian esc show but with a force user learning more about the nature of their power and without a young child tagging along lol.

I think the character-focused series ideas are limiting a lot of the creativity in how they can utilize certain characters. Marvel has a legacy of character focused stories. Super-heroes generally have comic books just for them. Star Wars does not need to do that though. So instead of a Vader series, I would propose a "Rise of the Empire" series (call it whatever you want). Showing Vader's emergence, the origins of the Inquisitors, the transition from the Republic Army to the Imperials, the hunt for the Jedi and the start of the propaganda that kept the galaxy under submission. You could go in different directions with that. Maybe all the characters the story follows are Imperials. The Jedi are depicted as traitors and extremists. A show like this would allow justification for MORE Vader but not TOO MUCH Vader (A Darth Vader named series would invite criticism of screen time and storyline focus, as the Kenobi series did despite him dominating the screen time).
Alternate Idea: Set it between ANH and The Empire Strikes Back. Explore the ramifications of the destruction of Alderan and the Death Star, the momentum of the rebellion and everything going on during that period without Luke, Leia and Han Solo.

I want to drive and listen and my UA-cam premium has run out due to some financial hard times atm, so it's tough turning the 144p on and leaving my phonescreen on while driving lol I'm the type that will always come back and check the vid out regardless, for me that's the real experience, however if I've got a 20min drive then it's
nice to give ya the views there too my man! Seriously something to consider if there's a way around it. Maybe you upload the video asap tho, so ripping the proper audio and getting it on Spotify is a process that requires it happen hours later than the vid upload 🤷‍♂️ not sure but either way thanks for the entertainment!

Kristian, you often say “I don’t understand the hesitation or resistance from Lucasfilm to adapt a story from the novels into TV/Film”. And you compare it to the Marvel movies and how they take from the comics when making their live action content. I may be missing a huge part of the argument, but could the reason be that with Star Wars, there is no separation between books, TV, film, and video games in terms of continuity? So when they create new content for live action, they wouldn’t retell or adapt a story from a different medium, because in theory, that story has already occurred and would potentially be a dent to canon? Stay awesome Darth Harloff and the Council!

    • @TheKristianHarloff

Having Obi Wan kill a defeated enemy doesn’t work for the character or the Jedi code and you don’t get that amazing conversation without a defeated Vader. • @andrewbarnett152

Thanks for speaking out against the noxiousness that surrounds the phrase 'not a real fan'. There is no such thing as a 'real fan'. There isn't an entrance exam required to be a fan, nor is it a hierarchical proposition. Whenever I've gone to the theater to see a Star Wars movie, nobody has ever asked to see my fan diploma at the entrance, or checked my fan bona fides on the way in.
It's a colossally stupid fallacy to suggest that there's any one fan is worth any more or any less than any other fan, and a phrase that grinds the gears even more than saying that 'nobody asked for' this movie or series, as if moviemakers are supposed to ask for permission before starting work.

It'll be cool to watch, especially if there are some new flashbacks of Anakin and maybe Ashoka or other characters. So why not? I don't understand the mentality of people who just want the universe expanded and not kept with what we know. I mean it's Disney, they have the money to do both, and it's their best bet to keep with what the GENERAL audience are used to, not only what Star Wars audience want. But they're doing a ton of shows with new characters as well, so everyone gets to eat cake lol.

I believe the hesitation with adapting Star Wars books like Lords Of The Sith or Lost Stars is that because they are the same "canon" as the on-screen stories (more or less despite a few changes/retcons) you can barely change anything, which traps the screenwriters and makes things predictable for everyone who already read the book. It's different when the MCU adapts from the comics because the comics are separate canon, so the screenwriters make massive changes and the none of the audience already knows every every plot point ahead of time. Of course this only applies to canon books, not stuff from Legends.

Why doesn’t anyone understand that Vader did not destroy Alderaan? Grand Moff TARKIn did at the orders of the Emperor. Vader is simply an Enforcer. He doesn’t make any decisions. In truth had Obi Wan killed Vader he wouldn’t be around to save Luke from the Emperor and bring balance back to the Force.
