A huge hole opened up in the middle of the driveway, our new house came with a hidden water feature!

After moving in about five weeks ago, we started to notice a slight dip in the middle of the driveway but didn't take too much notice of it
It got progressively worse over that time and then suddenly a hole appeared, worryingly we had been driving over it up until now with the removal lorry, the camper van, the pickup and the cars
Apparently about 50 years ago there was a well feeding water to one of the barns that in turn fed water to the house, once mains water pressure had been resolved there was no need for the well and it was capped with railway sleepers and tarmacked over, over time the timbers have rotten and started to give way
Fortunately no one was hurt and no damage was done so we've set about making things safe for now, we will be relaying the driveway at some point after the house renovations are complete so this is only a temporary fix until we decide exactly what to do with it

No one should ever seal off a magnificent old storage cistern. Clean it out, give it some new plummin', maybe install a camera and then seal it back up. Hopefully if it is needed it can be revived as water storage is so important to life.
