With the introduction of the Canon EOS R1 and R5 Mark II that both have the digic accelerator processor, Canon's Auto Focus is the best in the industry. I know some people will say, "how can you make such claims?". Simple, I've used every single camera Canon, Nikon and Sony have put out in the last decade. I've used them all in the real world from World Series's to photographing friends and family, I know.
Canon's Dual Pixel AF was already the best in the industry, with Sony's a9 III being the closest to matching AF quality. Now with the two new cameras, Canon has gone beyond what Nikon or Sony has done in the AF world. Once again, let me reiterate, ALL Mirrorless Cameras have better auto focus then their DSLR predecessor.
This video takes you inside the R1 and R5 Mark II to see the Auto Focus in action.

Just imagine Nikon's next flagship duo. The Z9 is already three years old and the Z8 although it came out later is basically a little Z9 so nothing new in comparison. You can bet your bottom dollar that development is already under way for a ZX and something like a Z8 II, they might even scrap what they've developed so far & go back to the drawing board after seeing Canons new system. But either way 2026 Nikon cameras will take the lead again.

My Z8 is "good enough" for me.... may not have the fastest AF, but then again, no need to upgrade to anything either (haven't even maxed out the camera at all and probably never will - just bought it so I could have a capable camera for the long haul -- the next 4-5+ years). That being said, I'd rather spend the money I DON'T spend on gear, on trips or vacations.... being a non-pro two camera bodies and a handful of quality zooms is enough for me (and this took me a few years and thousands of dollars to figure out sadly).
But to be honest, I'm actually happy that I've come to that realization that I don't need the latest gear. It allows me to focus on more important things, and gear isn't one of them.

I've shot tens of thousands of photos on my Z9 and it's AF is good, very good. On the basis of this montage I'll admit my Z9 couldn't match the tracking shown here via the R1. Now the caveat to that is that whilst the Z9 doesn't appear to look as sticky ( the AF eye box is less fluid giving the impression that it is missing focus ) the reality is that on critical viewing later the Z9 nails it most of the time. It's important to realise that just because the little AF box sticks like glue that doesn't necessarily mean the finished photo is in focus. Assuming the R1 is getting pretty much 100% pin sharp focus then without a doubt I'll concede that Canons latest AF is superior to both Sony and Canon.😉

Pretty much love it. I shoot northern lights realtime video with A7S, A7S2 usually at ISO 40.000 with lenses f/1.4 or faster, but on R6, R8 video it's max 25600 and already more noise than A7S at 40.000 ... so now I'm very curious to see how nigthsky / aurora video at 40-80.000 ISO will look like on R1 with my RF lenses at f/0.95 , or with f/1.4 lens plus speedbooster... IF noise level is same as on A7S when shooting video at ISO 40.000 then it will be a winner . I understand that it captures half-second of frames at the current burst rate when you push the shutter half-way, and when you push the shutter all the way it commits those to memory and then continues to capture sequential frames as long as you keep the shitter depressed. My questions: 1) If you do not press the shutter all the way but instead let it back up, are those frames lost or are they permanently stored?, and 2) Is there a limit (other than buffer capacity) on how long you can continue to capture images once you fully depress the shutter? I shoot a lot of equine events. I struggle with my R5 bouncing from human focus to equine focus and yes I have it set to track animal. I also struggle with it jumping from one animal to another. This new Canon could possibly help with that??

I wonder if the subject focus priority feature will allow you to prioritize horses over human faces. :D perhaps if you take a few photos of the horses at the event, maybe it'll focus on the horses' heads over their riders? Guess we'll have to wait and find out.

Does the C400 have the same autofocus as the R5 II?
