Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero is a story-driven fighting game that puts you in the shoes of Sub-Zero and chronicles a series of events that occurred prior to the first Mortal Kombat.
You, the Lin Kuei's most cunning assassin, are sent to steal an important document. However, this mission proves to be a test from a mysterious character (who turns out to be MK4's Quan Chi) who charges you upon retrieval of the document to recover an ancient medallion of untold power. Upon your return, Quan Chi reveals that he actually tricked you, and the medallion is the key to awakening the demon Shinnok (yup, the same baddie from MK4). Now a reluctant hero, you must pursue Quan Chi through hell itself hoping you get to Shinnok before him.
Technically speaking, this game represents the final evolutionary step in the MK series' 2D engine. The game takes the familiar 2D Mortal Kombat fighting environment and turns it into a hybrid fighting/platform game, where you must run and jump through hazardous levels as well as fight your way through both digitized and polygonal enemies. Sub-Zero's interface is the same as in every MK game, with the addition of the "use" and "turn around" buttons, an inventory, and a slight RPG twist that gives you EXP for defeating opponents which becomes new techniques and moves to execute in the game.
This is an improvement of an existing run (tasvideos.org/2362M.html). Besides a set of small improvements, the main differences of this run are a new shortcut in the sixth level and much more qualitative score management. All of this in total allowed Fly to reduce the time of the run by nearly 3 minutes. - Ігри

To be honest, this is probably how Sub-Zero would look actually doing his job.

This is pretty much the only game in history that manages to merge the classic fighting game core with the platforming and exploration, which makes it a unique experience. Most beat'm'ups of 90's didn't usually have any complex level design, and the fighting system was simplified compared to the fighting games.
This game also features good level design, the levels encourage you to explore them, there are many hazards and interactive elements that you can use to defeat you enemies, and the platforming is fun and provides a creative use of 3D environment, such as rotating windmills on a second level. The game looks great too.
The only objective down points I can see in this game are the imperfect experience system which encourages you to use one combo over and over again, the boring water level and some bosses are too tedious to kill.

This is seriously one of the hardest games ever made. I remember playing it as a kid and I don't think I ever beat the boss of the wind level.

Once you finish the wind level. For the most part its smooth sailing until you get to the Bridge level where you need to find the sub-bosses patterns to beat them.
This game is nothing compared to games like Battletoads, TMNT1 and ninja gaiden 1-3

Love how the TAS runner made Sub Zero fk around so much with the little bit of down time he had. Dancing, doing unnecessary actions and overall tea bagging. Made this one of the most hilarious videos I've seen for a Speedrun. Thanks
funniest part for me was when he let that one monk get hits in on him on the water stage. made him feel like he was doing something for a minute. I dunno why but that cracked me up

I honestly dunno how I got through video games as a kid, I've turned soft as an adult I couldn't handle this shit today.

this was one of my favorite games as a kid it was hard but after learning the controls and beating the second level boss everything was good from there
I played this as a kid too and boy was it hard but that didn't discourage me from trying to beat it honestly I felt the water level was the hardest since it was really easy to get lost, the death scenes were the best and scared the crap out of me lol th people who hate on it are the ones who gave up.
I actually thought this game was good, maybe because I didn't have many options at the time, but I did end up beating it with the assistance of a magazine. Although there were some genuinely weird design decisions, mostly with the item usage. The music is pretty good though.
Imagine if they made a game like this now or shaolin monks 2

This was one of those games that was so damn hard and frustrating but I refused to give up on it. I tortured myself for hours trying to beat this super hard game.

At first I thought it was going to be some elaborate setup for skipping some section (kind of like how some sections he used the enemies to uppercut him onto higher platforms), and I cracked up laughing after realizing it was all for no reason!

I definitely remember playing this as a kid and getting destroyed by the environment traps more than enemies, as well as being lost all of the time...which didn't help with the former either. My favorite MK game though for sure.

I've played trough this game many times, it's not an easy game even for someone who knows what they're doing. The things done in the Wind level are like not even possible by a human.

I have painful memories of this game, I spent days on rage quit trying to get to the end of the wind level, and days on rage quit because I didn't know how to end Fujin's fight, long story short, I never finished the game because I never knew how to activate the lifts in Quan Chi's temple
After almost 20 years I saw a video of someone explaining the controls and talking about those lifts specifically, but I already forgot 🤣

I think this guy played this game the way Sub zero was meant to be played. He's not trying to defeat every enemy like he would in Mortal Kombat. Instead he has a single goal that he accomplishes with ruthless efficiency even sometimes using his foes to his advantage. I think 15:34 to 16:00 demonstrates my point to a T. Perfectly played sir.
